Thomas Woolner in Manchester
[This page has been kindly contributed by Paul Barlow, an authority on Woolner.] Woolner's most important works in Manchester were statues of kings and law-givers commissioned from him to decorate the Assize courts built by the architect Alfred Waterhouse . Sadly, the building was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War, but most of Woolner's statues were rescued and are now housed in the new buildings. The most effective designs draw on late Gothic sculpture, making dramatic use of deeply cut drapery for graphic visual effect at a distance. They can be seen by appointment with Mr Francis Law on application to the courts. Equally interesting are carvings by the O'Shea brothers, who worked with Woolner at the courts, and earlier at the Oxford Museum of Natural History. The O'Sheas carved 'gothic' decorations on Ruskinian principles. In Manchester, they decorated two column-capitals with historical scenes of punishments, including various forms of torture, a scold's bridle, stocks and pillory. The subjects are treated with lively black humour. In Manchester's Albert Square, which extends from Waterhouse 's town hall building, can be seen Woolner's statue of Bishop Frazer (1818-1885), the second Bishop of Manchester. Local legend has it that the Bishop's back is turned to the town hall because of his objection to spending eternity staring at a building he disliked. At the base of the statue are reliefs depicting his charitable activities.

Sir Charles Nicholson - Portrait of a collector
Exhibition dates: 31 October - 5 December 2002
Many of the magnificent and valuable art treasures found in the University's Great Hall, Fisher Library Rare Books, Nicholson Museum and the Art Collection are the result of the cultural patronage of Sir Charles Nicholson. On 11 October 1852, Nicholson presided over the opening ceremony of the inauguration of the University of Sydney. As Chancellor and one of the principal founders, Nicholson is credited with securing the acceptance of Edmund Blacket's superb plans for the main quadrangle buildings. (Left) Byzantine artist, Last Judgement 13thC
He was also responsible for arranging the commissioning of the impressive series of stained glass windows in the University's Great Hall, and generously donated the Oxford window. Today he is best remembered for the donation of his classical antiquities that established the Nicholson Museum. Part 1 of this exhibition survey of Nicholson's gifts includes paintings, drawings, illuminated books, a rare 18th century tapestry, and a decorative reliquary box once containing portions of the venerated remains of St Hippolytus. As a collection it provides some insight into the cultural aspirations of this well-educated and wealthy doctor and politician, who arrived in Sydney in 1833. Nicholson spent some thirty years in New South Wales and established a grand home at Lindesay House on the shores of Sydney harbour. He bought the house from his close friend Thomas Livingstone Mitchell in 1845 and lived as a bachelor surrounded by many of his paintings, tapestries, numerous marble busts, antiquities and books.

'Thomas Woolner'
Thomas Woolner was born on the I7th December 1825 at Hadleigh, Suffolk, and came to London in 1838, where he studied sculpture under William Behnes. He attended the Royal Academy Schools from 1842, and first exhibited in 1843. Through Rossetti met William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, and agreed that their views on art were applicable to sculpture, so he accepted membership of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 - the only sculptor to be a member. He was also a poet, and contributed to the Pre-Raphaelite magazine 'The Germ'. Some six years later he left for Australia to seek a wealthier life, and his Pre-Raphaelite brothers drew a famous collection of portraits of each other to send to him. He returned to England in 1854 with an enhanced reputation, and became popular as a sculptor of intellectuals - such s Wordsworth, Tennyson, Browning, Gladstone and Darwin. He married Alice Waugh on 6 September 1864, later becoming William Holman Hunt’s brother-in-law when Hunt married Edith Waugh in 1875. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1875, and was Professor of Sclupture there from 1877 to 1879. He also did occasional architectural such as the Manchester Assize Courts.
