He has successfully experimented with diverse mediums including muralism, easel painting, drawing, printmaking, jewelry and tapestry design, sculpture and ceramics even at age 92, he continues to experiment with various media and has included batik painting to the list. Zalce painted the first colored cement mural in Mexico in 1932 and later did several fresco murals in Mexico City and Michoacan. His works have been included in important shows like "Twenty Centuries of Mexican Art", 1940 (MoMA, New York); "Contemporary Mexican Art" in 1958 (Lilly, Lyon & Toulouse, France); "Images of Mexico", 1987 (Dallas Museum of Art); and "50 Años del Taller de Gráfica Popular" also in 1987 (Palace of Fine Arts). In 1932 he had his first solo exhibition. Subsequent relevant solo shows include retrospectives at the Palace of Fine Arts in 1948, 1962 and 1995. The image on the computer is a digitized image taken from a photographic slide of the original woodcut. The original woodcut is 15" high x 18" wide. CONDITION: What can I determine about the condition of the artwork? The original work is in generally good condition except that there is a triangular-shaped discoloration in the middle area (just in front of and slightly including the nose of the locomotive) which is reflected in the digitized image. SUBJECT MATTER: What can I determine about what the artwork depicts, if anything? The woodcut depicts a scene containing well-known features of the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1919. In the foreground lies a humble, wounded Mexican revolutionary of Indian stock. He wears the traditional dress and sandals (called huaraches ) of the Mexican peasant. His head wound is being tended to by his barefoot female companion. She is identified as one of the rieleras (camp followers, riding the comandeered trains with their male revolutionary counterparts) through reference to the locomotive that fills the upper left background. In the right foreground, rifles are arrayed in a self-supporting tripod, in the middle of which is a large cache of ammunition, including cartridge belts. Zalce, quien perteneció a la generación de Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros y José Clemente Orozco, recibió el Premio Nacional de las Artes en 2001. Nace el 12 de enero en Pátzcuaro, Michoacán. Sus padres, Ramón Zalce y María Torres Sandoval, ejercieron la fotografía de manera profesional. A la edad de 16 años, asiste a la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (Academia de San Carlos), de la ciudad de México. En esta Institución toma clases de pintura con Germán Cedovius, dibujo al natural con Leandro Izaguirre y Sóstenes Ortega y anatomía con Carlos Dublán. Por su parte José María Lozano y Juan Pacheco instruyen a Zalce en Historia del Arte y Perspectiva, respectivamente. Participa en la muestra colectiva Arte e Industrias en España, en la que obtiene un segundo lugar en pintura. Funda la Escuela de Pintura y escultura en Taxco, Guerrero, con Isabel Villaseñor pinta un mural al exterior en el edificio de la escuela rural de Ayotla, Tlaxcala, utilizando por primera vez el cemento Completa sus estudios con el grabador Emilio Amero, quien le enseña la técnica de la litografía en la Escuela Central de Artes Plásticas. Este aprendizaje genera la creación de 15 litografías. Ahí mismo, asiste a la cátedra de Diego Rivera. Estudia escultura y talla directa con Guillermo Ruiz en la Escuela de Talla Directa del Ex Convento de la Merced. Ilustra con tres litografías, en la revista Contemporáneos un poema de Bernardo Ortíz de Montellano.
