Return to IfA As NASA Administrator Dan Goldin has noted, young students are especially interested in three things: ghosts, dinosaurs, and space. stronomy is a unique field in that it evokes a fundamental interest in exploration and the search for our origins which has long been rooted in humankinds curiosity - perhaps more so than in any other field. This public appeal, combined with the general interdisciplinary nature of the field gives it a high potential as an educational avenue for increasing scientific awareness. We need to capitalize on the interest in space to develop and encourage a continuing understanding and curiosity about space-related issues. The Astronomy Education Group is focused on developing the skills to properly utilize instructional technology in teaching astronomy. These technologies include internet based instruction, mastery learning, java applets, animations, and simulation environments such as Redshift 3. Local college and high schools educators are participating in discussions on developing these skills. Links are provided to the activities of the Astronomy Education Group below.

Several applets illustrating important astronomical phenomena have been developed. Our site will eventually provide background information, exercises, pre and post assessment, and links to additional information for a number of applets.
    Astronomy Education Workshops
An Astronomy Education Workshop is held annually in late September and special workshops are held when visiting astronomers are on campus. All high school and college instructors of either physics or astronomy are invited to participate. A recurrent theme in our workshops is the use of instructional technology to improve our teaching of astronomy.

    Astronomy Education Workshop 2000
    Friday, September 22, 2:00 - 5:30 pm
    Ferguson 114, UNL City Campus
Approximately 25 local high school and college educators met at the UNL campus to discuss the usage of instructional technology in astronomy education. Details on the offerings of the workshop are given below. This workshop was targeted for college instructors of 100-level astronomy classes and high school instructors who presently teach astronomy or may be interested in developing an astronomy course. The workshop has three goals: 1) to acquaint educators with the new web-based astronomy "textbook" Online Journey Through Astronomy, 2) to introduce new developments in the UNL Department of Physics and Astronomy, and 3) to bring together members of the astronomy and physics teaching community to share ideas and identify potential collaborators.
    Workshop Agenda
    • 2:00 pm - Welcome - Dr. Kevin Lee
    • 2:15 pm - Keynote Address - Dr. Michael Guidry
"Online Journey through Astronomy: Interactive Animation and Web-Based Educational Technology"
Abstract: Provocative hint: Online Journey through Astronomy is usable at 56 kbps modem speeds and contains no GIFs, JPEGs, animated GIFs, Quicktimes, or MPEGs (staples of standard Web development) or Director movies (staples of CD ROM development) in their original formats for any of its 350 interactive animations or 1000 illustrations! These "conventional" technologies have been replaced by programming using primarily streaming vector graphics and streaming vector graphics with embedded bitmaps (implemented with Flash Shockwave), Java, Javascript, and some PERL.

    INTERNET CONNECTIONS TO THE CURRICULUM
The Internet has numerous sites for teachers and students to learn more about astronomy and the related space sciences. The best way to look for appropriate sites is to do a "net search" utilizing one of the many available search engines like Yahoo, Web Crawler, etc. Just type in some key words (like solar system, or Neptune) and check out the sites the search engine will retrieve. Below are some sites which contain relevant material to the Sky Science unit. If you go to the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada web site (listed below) the links are ready for you to click on them. Please note that internet addresses often change.
