Astronomical Opportunities
for
Bucknell Students
The Astronomy Program is integrated into the Physics curriculum, and is designed to be accessible to majors and non-majors alike. In addition to courses, the Astronomy Program offers opportunities teaching and research in the field. Students interested in concentrating their studies in astronomy are encouraged to major in Physics and take ASTR 201 and 301 as electives for that major. Additional opportunities for advanced study and/or research participation are available through Independent Research or Honors Thesis programs (see below) . In-depth exposure to astronomical research is available through our summer research program. Interested non-majors can obtain a general exposure to astronomy through the ASTR 101-102 survey sequence. The motivated student can follow this up as a Teaching Assistant for this sequence. Many TA's are non-majors and it's a great opportunity for those interested in teaching (especially science teaching) careers.
Astronomy Courses Offered
Astronomy 101-102
Students interested in a non-technical introduction to astronomy are encouraged to take the ASTR 101 and/or ASTR 102 survey courses. These courses are designed to introduce students to the way astronomy is done and concentrates on how we know what we know about the universe. Neither course has a prerequisite, and each qualify as lab science courses for non-majors.

Astronomy Education
I am personally committed to the teaching of astronomy and to the public understanding of science. I believe that researchers ought actively to contribute to the teaching of their subject at all levels, and I have experience of astronomy teaching at university (undergraduate and postgraduate, including the first-year astronomy course Foundations of Astronomy at UCL); adult education (mostly evening classes, including several under the auspices of the WEA ); and secondary and primary schools. I regard inspiring school children with the wonders of astronomy as particularly important, both as an integral part of science education and because I think important social and political consequences follow from a proper understanding of the cosmic perspective . For this reason I am a member of the The Association for Astronomy Education , under the auspices of which I have compiled a list of professional astronomers who are prepared to give school talks . I have outlined the rationale behind this initiative in ``Wanderers in space: the case for peripatetic astronomy teachers,'' Astronomy Now , 54, (1991). I am also a frequent lecturer at

Teachers wishing to make use of this service should contact potential speakers directly. Audio-visual requirements, and possible travel expenses, should be discussed with individual speakers. In addition to the talks listed, many speakers may also be prepared to talk about general astronomy to younger children, or to offer advice on degree courses and astronomy-related careers; interested teachers are encouraged to discuss these possibilities with speakers in advance. New Texas Astronomy Education Center Breaks Ground Today at McDonald Observatory FORT DAVIS, Texas: Today, a unique, bilingual astronomy science center takes a step closer to its goal of bringing the wonders and excitement of science and technology to Texans and visitors alike. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on July 29, 2000, to mark the beginning of construction of the Texas Astronomy Education Center at McDonald Observatory, a research facility of the University of Texas. The Texas Astronomy Education Center will showcase one of the nation’s top science exhibits, "Decoding Starlight," an interactive exhibit for all ages that explains how astronomers use spectroscopy to understand the universe. Other features include a 74-seat orientation theater, classrooms, a telescope park, and a star amphitheater. Construction of the $7.7 million, 11,000-square-foot Center, which will open in fall 2001, gets underway later this year. According to Frank Bash, "Our new Visitors Center is designed especially to tell the people who support what we do at McDonald Observatory and to excite Texas kids about science and technology using astronomical examples. These future scientists, engineers, and technicians have a very important role to play in the increasingly high-tech future of Texas."

    Astronomy Education Committee
Many experts consider Mauna Kea to be the finest location for land-based astronomy in the world ‚ or at least the best in the northern hemisphere. Its summit rises 13,796 feet above sea level ‚ well above the clouds, which tend to settle at around the 9,000-foot level. As a result, astronomers are afforded clear viewing for more than 300 days out of each year. Situated on an island in the middle of the Pacific, Mauna Kea is well buffered by thousands of miles of ocean with little of the air and light pollution that plague other locales.
The presence of many of the worldís most sophisticated astronomical facilities presents world-class educational opportunities as well. MKMBís Astronomy Education Committee seeks to maximize these opportunities by encouraging the interaction between astronomers and the local community. Astronomy Education Committee members include: Jim Beletic, David Byrne, Heather Cole, Christine Copes, Richard Crowe, Janice Jenner, Alice Kawakami, Jim Kennedy, Peter Michaud, Andrew Perala, Barbara Robertson, Ian Shelton, Dolly Strazar, Nancy Tashima, and OMKM outreach officer Arnold Hiura.
The Astronomy Education Committee meeting provides an opportunity for all participants to share the educational objectives and activities of their respective organizations. There are many educational projects and programs aimed at offering astronomy and space science opportunities for Big Island students and teachers.
