Glen D. Riley Observatory
Photo taken 5-11-01 by K. Kulzer The N.A.A. has operated the Glen D. Riley Observatory since it's construction was the new club's first big project, back in 1973. The observatory has been an anchor for the club in all the years since, and the focus of many club activities, both public and private. Thousands of visitors, young and old, have had chances to view the wonders of the heavens through the facility's main telescope and many portables out on the lawns as our guests. Club members can become keyholders to the observatory, and make use of it at their leisure.
In 1990, the observatory was relocated to a new spot on the large parcel of City of Naperville land which has always been its home. At that time, the small, 10' diameter building was replaced by a larger one, allowing larger groups to be served, as well as providing storage and warm-up space. In return for the use of the City's land, and the security it provides to our facility, we provide regular opportunities for the public to visit us. For information on our public evenings, see the More Information page; for information on scheduling observing sessions for community, school, and youth groups, see our

Education and Outreach is geared for people involved in science education such as teachers, museum or planetarium workers, youth or community organization workes and volunteers, scientists doing outreach education or journalists writing about science education. Here you will find ways to keep abreast on the SOFIA education program, information on workshops, presentations and other educatonal events, reviews of some of the programs being planned, fun stuff to do and resources for space science and astronomy education web sites. New...Active Astronomy: Classroom Activities for Learning About Infrared Light - Activities that focus on improving student's understanding of infrared light. New... Collaboration with Parsons School of Design- The SOFIA EPO team has been working with students at the Parsons School of Design in New York City on a unique educational and creative collaboration. Parsons digital design instructor Karen Nourse wanted to give her students a challenging project-one that would involve working with an outside "client" to give the students experience in the real world of client relationships as well as the design challenge. Ms. Nourse found out about SOFIA and contacted the EPO team. Soon some 15 students were developing many creative ways to help explain the complexities of a "telescope in an airplane."

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS TO
SURVEY ASTRONOMY EDUCATION RESEARCH LITERATURE
See Bibliography to date Download MS Word version of Bibliography It has become clear that the astronomy education community needs a comprehensive canvas of the educational research literature to create an annotated bibliography of articles describing astronomy education results. As these articles are spread across many different journals, we are asking for volunteers to complete a survey of one of the following journals. Although there are probably no more than 6-10 articles in any 10 volumes of a journal, it would be an enormous task for just one person. For each of the journals listed below, we need one person to volunteer to go to their library and record the formal reference for articles on astronomy and space science education topics and create a 25-word description of the work. We anticipate that this task should take approximately 2 hours; please use the format listed below . The complete list will be distributed on the AAS Education WWW site. If you are interested in helping out in this astronomy and space science education project, please select a first and second choice from the journal volumes listed below and email Dave Bruning (University of Wisconsin-Parkside) at

Astronomy in the classroom...
C leveland Astronomers are here to help improve the teaching of astronomy and physical science in general, mainly for 4th through 9th grade classrooms (and youth groups). Professional and amateur astronomers are linked with local teachers or youth group leaders, and "adopt" a classroom or community group, visiting 4 to 10 times per year. Partners at each district site are trained together at 2-day workshops, and then develop an individualized program to share the excitement of modern astronomy and the power of the scientific method with their class or group. The Astronomers here in the Cleveland Area really WANT to work with you! We work in conjunction and coordinated with:
Ohio Aerospace Incorporated,
Ohio Space Grant Consortium,
NASA/Glenn Research Center, Educators Resource Center
Museum of Natural history
Schuele Planetarium Training and Materials are provided by a grant through Ohio Space Grant Consortium Training techniques and materials have been developed primarily by Project Astro of California.

Catch a Quasiperiodic Wave

Source: Physical Review Focus Posted: Vibrating a fluid-filled pan with a specially prepared bottom creates quasiperiodic standing waves on the surface. A wave pulse sent through this background sheds light on the mathematical description of an electron traversing a quasiperiodic crystal. Full story... Hubble Discovers an Evaporating Planet Source: HubbleSite Posted: For the first time, astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have observed the atmosphere of an extrasolar planet evaporating off into space. Much of the planet may eventually disappear, leaving only a dense core. The planet is a type of extrasolar planet known as a 'hot Jupiter.' Full story... T-ray Triumph Source: Physical Review Focus Posted: X rays may be as familiar as your local dentist's office or airport security checkpoint, but it's unlikely that you've ever encountered a powerful T-ray. This long-wavelength infrared light could be used for a host of possible applications, but until recently, it's been impossible to generate strong enough beams. Full story...
