Astronomy History - Johannes Kepler Defender of Copernicus - Planetary Lawmaker - Science Fiction Writer Join the Discussion "Most people believe in a Newton science vs a Kepler science. Newton science is the one that has a problem going faster than light. But, then Newton science is a subversion of Kepler's secound law of physic's. But, true Kepler science does not have that barrior in it. I think I will stay with Kepler science!"

Astronomy History - Galileo Galilei Astronomy Rebel With a Cause The son of a famous musician and music theorist, Galileo was born near Pisa, Italy. He was educated by monks at Vallombrosa, then entered the university of Pisa in 1581 to study medicine. There, he found his interests changing to philosophy and mathematics and he ended his university career in 1585 without a degree. Despite his lack of a degree, he tutored privately for a while until he became professor of mathematics at Pisa in 1589. Legend has it that while teaching there, he demonstrated to his students that Aristotle was wrong about speed of fall being related to the weight of an object by dropping two items off the leaning tower.

The Florida Teaching Observatory: Its History
Text prepared by Alex G. Smith September 1998 (Additional notes U ntil the end of World War II, the University of Florida's interest in astronomy seems to have been confined to one elementary course in descriptive astronomy and a course in navigation. The Department of Mathematics was responsible for these offerings, which were passed around among various instructors. Astronomical topics, with a strong emphasis on history, were also included in the physical science course C-2, taught in University College, which in that era included all freshmen and sophomores. During the 1930s, a small wooden student observatory was erected on the hillside south of the present Campus Police station , then the home of the campus radio station, WRUF. With a slide-off roof, the observatory sheltered 3-inch and 4-inch refracting telescopes, seen in the first illustration. By 1948 the roof no longer opened, and one could easily kick a hole in the rotting walls Such was the fate of the University's first teaching observatory. During the early 1950s, Dr. Leonidas Roberts, from the Physical Sciences unit, and the present writer conducted weekly observing classes for Physical Sciences students on the hilltop above the defunct observatory. These open-air labs utilized a homemade 8-inch reflecting telescope with optics ground and polished by the writer; this was later supplemented with a 6-inch reflector similarly fabricated by Dr. Roberts under the writer's guidance.

History of the Warner and Swasey Observatory and Library
The astronomical tradition at Case Western Reserve University, then Case School of Applied Science, had its beginning before the foundation of the college itself, when its founder, Leonard Case, Jr., met John Stockwell, a self-educated astronomer. The two collaborated in a number of theoretical investigations concerning the motion of the moon. When the college was organized shortly after the death of Leonard Case, John Stockwell became its first Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy. Research and instruction in astronomy began in the year 1881. About that time, two astronomical enthusiasts, Worcester R. Warner and Ambrose Swasey, moved their machine tool firm to Cleveland and began their distinguished careers in the manufacture of precision instruments and large telescopes.
Worcester R. Warner and Ambrose Swasey They took a great interest in Case School of Applied Science; and when, after some years, they became trustees of the college, it was natural for them to take an interest in improving the astronomical equipment of the college. They encouraged Charles S. Howe, the second professor of astronomy and later president, in his work on the determination of fundamental star positions with the almuncantar. So interested were these two men in the study of the stars that they built and housed a 9.5 inch refracting telescope in a small observatory between their adjoining residences in Cleveland.

Radio Interferometry: The Saga and the Science In this symposium proceedings volume, edited by Dave Finley and Miller Goss, many of the pioneers of radio interferometry trace the history of this important astronomical technique through reminiscences of the career of Barry Clark and reviews of the scientific contributions of the instruments to which he has been so vital. Here you will find a wealth of historical information, a useful outline of the achievements of the Very Large Array and Very Long Baseline Array, and a look ahead to the future of radio interferometry.
