With software developed by John Rogers, Jack is able to blink the twodigital images so that he can see the asteroid as a moving object.
http://www.starbytes.com.au/astro/astro.html
Home Index Slideshow Help Jack B. Child has been photographing asteroids for many years, in cooperation with Eleanor Helin and the World Space Foundation. One method of identifying an asteroid on a photograph involves using a stereo microsope which allows the viewer to see two plates at the same time, so that the movement of the asteroid can be seen. Another is to take a time exposure, where the asteroid's movement will appear as a streak. With software developed by John Rogers, Jack is able to "blink" the two digital images so that he can see the asteroid as a moving object. Website design: Maren Child

Jayanne English's Astronomy Images
Contrary to what you hear, astronomy images that you see in the newspapers, magazines, and television are not "snapshots". They are constructed out of black and white data files by a person assigning a single colour to each of the selected data files and then by combining these single colour images to form a multicolour image. Even when astronomers use telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope, the data are often from radiation that our human eyes can't detect (like infrared radiation). At the bottom of this page are links to information about how images are constructed and the issue of "true colour". contact me The Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) Image Gallery
These images use the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory. An array of radio antennas in Penticton, British Columbia. Our eyes do not detect radiation from the radio spectrum but we wouldn't want to ignore these data. Radio telescopes capture the emission from the material between stars: cold gas, fast moving particles (called Cosmic Rays), and magnetic fields. This allows us to study star formation, star death, the structure of galaxies and the motions of galaxies and the material within them. The CGPS is now part of the International Galactic Plane Survey; both surveys study our home galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy.
Most of the current colour images at the CGPS Image Gallery have been put together by me with support by Russ Taylor (University of Calgary).

Astronomy: Images, Ideas and Perspectives
paintings, drawings, photographs, interactive exhibits by Judith Baker and John Beaver
An artist and an astronomer have collaborated on an extensive art/science exhibition, combining art with interactive astronomy exhibits. Judith Baker and John Beaver participated equally in the creation of the exhibition, so much so that the works are left unsigned. Many of the nearly sixty pieces are direct collaborations: Beaver's astrophotography incorporated into Baker's painting, for example. Astronomy provides the connecting thread for all the pieces, but other, more traditional artistic themes weave through the exhibition as well. A primary goal is to educate about both art and astronomy, using each as a point of departure for the other. Astronomy: Images, Ideas and Perspectives is not an exhibit of "space art." Baker and Beaver wanted to stay away from simply producing more "artist's representations" of this galaxy or that planet. Instead, for subject matter they focus on the forms and processes at work in our universe, the mythological figures associated with the planets, how the stars and galaxies are arranged in space, how the universe changes over time, how our own Earth-bound perspective affects what we see.

May I use Garbo's astronomy images?
I'd like to use one of the fine astronomy images in your Garbo collection on my home page. May I? Ok. So who's the author whom I should ask then? See if the information is contained in the material you are asking about. If that information is not present, I regret, but there is nothing I can do. In the case of astronomy images, there is one thing you could try to do. Go to my astronomy site links

Comet Hyakutake
A colour image of C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake) taken by Michael Brown (University of Melbourne) and Chris Fluke (University of Melbourne) using the 40 inch telescope at Siding Spring. The image was taken on the morning of Sunday 25 Feb 1996 (UT 24.77 Feb 96) after a night imaging for Kuiper Belt Objects. The ion tail is visible, stretching towards the top left of the image. The image is 28 arcmin by 17 arcmin and is a combination of a 60 second R band exposure, an 80 second V band exposure and a 100 second B band exposure. The magnitudes of the comet are approximately R=7.6, V=6.9 and B=7.5.
Eta Carinae Nebula
An image of the Eta Carinae nebula taken by Michael Brown with a CCD camera on the 40-inch telescope at Siding Spring Observatory. This image contains some of the brightest stars known in our galaxy. One of these stars, Eta Carinae, is the very bright star near the centre of the image. A cluster of young stars (Trumpler 14) can be seen at the top right of the image. Click here for a larger image of this nebula . Superb photographs of Eta Carinae can be found at David Malin's web site at the Anglo Australian Observatory.

My Astronomy Images In Christmas '99 I purchased a low light b/w security video camera from Allthing in Perth. Until now it has been used at prime focus(no lens and put in place of the eyepiece). I have been able to get a few reasonable shots of Saturn and the moon Jupiter is still a tricky one to image. See Shots for 2002 below for my best so far. I have attempted some deep sky work with very poor results, as you will see. The film camera is giving far better results for deep sky. This is the first time the cold hydrogen clouds have been seen in detail, emphasizing the superb quality of the data collected by
