One of the most exciting aspects of modern astronomy is the number of pictures available. The probes that explore the planets and the telescopes that show us deep space all provide snapshots. Here are some of my favorite sites for images.
  • HubbleSite and Hubble Space Telescope Public Pictures Here you can find all the magnificent Hubble images, all with captions and many with detailed background information, together with tours, activities, news, and materials for teachers. You can see the latest images, including those the staff considers the Hubble's "greatest hits."
  • National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) Image Gallery NOAO includes a number of major telescopes in the US and the Southern Hemisphere, and is a national facility where any astronomer can apply for research time.
  • NASA's Planetary Photojournal This site features thousands of the best images from planetary exploration, with detailed captions and excellent indexing. Some of the best images from NOAO instruments are here. You can dial up images by space craft, feature name, or date, and you can download images in a number of formats. See the giant volcano on Mars or the huge red storm on Jupiter that's twice the size of our entire planet.

This page should give you an idea of some of the astronomy work I do. Click on the small images to get full sized images. The first 4 images above are of the high mass star formation region Monoceros R2. The first two images show MonR2 in two different broadband near infrared filters. The first is centered at a wavelength of 1.65 microns, while the second is centered at 2.23 microns. The next image is a composite of three images showing the ionized hydrogen line emission from Brackett alpha (red), and Brackett gamma (blue), along with the PAH dust emission feature (green) surrounding the central HII region in MonR2 (the green ring seen here is the same as the ring surrounding IRS1 and IRS2 in the first two images). The last image shows the dust extinction to the MonR2 HII region as determined from a ratio of the Brackett gamma image and a radio map of the same region. The last image above is of the high mass star formation region K3-50A (at 2.23 microns). The first animation shows images displaying the effects of the collision between fragments of the Schoemaker-Levy 9 comet with Jupiter. The sequence starts at 4.1 microns and runs down to 1.6 microns (there is a large wavelength gap between 2.2 and 3.0 microns that was not imaged). These images were taken on the night of the 21st (21/22 UT) and are centered near 00 hours UT on the 22nd. The images start above and then go into a methane band in the 3 micron range, where most of the planet (other than the poles and the impact sites) disappears. The sequence then jumps to 2.2 microns where the planet is partially in another methane band and continues to show the planet as it comes out of that methane band and then enters another near 1.7 microns. The sequence ends at ~1.65 microns. The cycle repeats a few times. If you want to see it again, hit reload.

The pilgrimage center of Chitrakuta has a complex geometry in which major shrines are contained in a series of interlocking triangles, which are icons of Rama. The following are images of various objects I have studied while at UCSC. Any colors are quasi-false colors, derived from black and white images taken through different color filters. So, the colors are probably not what you would see with your own eye, but they should be kinda close. For other pretty astronomy pictures, check out the Hubble Heritage Project website or the Pretty Pictures directory at the NRAO. This image of NGC 3656 (the name stands for "New General Catalog" entry #3656) reveals the galaxy to be fairly irregular in shape. The averaged light profile looks like an elliptical galaxy, but unlike an elliptical galaxy, we see dust lanes and a loop of light to the upper left. My guess would be that this elliptical has recently merged with another galaxy, and is in the process of swallowing another. The image was taken at the Keck Observatory using the LRIS imaging spectrometer. A larger version of the image is available.

Starry Nights Astronomy Images
March, 2002
Once again, the weather was somewhat less than cooperative during the week we spent in Wimberly. There were a couple of good nights, but only one that allowed photography until the wee hours. I spent that night shooting with my new toy, a Nikon 300mm f2.8 ED lens . The two galaxy shots below used this lens. Scroll down to see the links to other pix.
Above is M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy
Two images, each exposed for about 70 minutes, combined with Images Plus.
Above: M101, the Pinwheel galaxy
About 50 minutes exposure. Above photos note: Nikon 300mm f2.8 EDIF lens at f2.8. Lens was mounted on my Losmandy G11 mount using the Losmandy "dual saddle" plate & 125mm rings. Tracking with Sbig STV autoguider. Kodak LE 400 print film, Nikon Coolscan IV ED film scanner. The frames above are extreme crops, with the usual processing in Photoshop 6.0. Link to Auriga area shot

58. GIC - Errors In Astronomy Images
This starving tape worm, in a Dss image near Ngc 4151 Badly managed or sloppilypresented astronomy images are almost non existent on the web.
http://visitastronomy.com/errors.htm
IMAGE PATCHING ERRORS
Straight line gashes and rectangles blow away some of the center region in Hubble's Ngc 4414.
Image patching errors (rectangle straight lines in the midst of coherency) are cited and pointed out systemically throughout Galaxies In Chaos, noticed where an image's integrety breaks down and no further interpretation is possible.
Above, straight lines riddle the center area of a Hubble image of Ngc 3314, the center area has been enhanced, and magnified to the point of almost loosing all resolution except some details are still seen to be coherent in the midst of areas which are clearly only straight edge rectangles of widely variant image densities.
Above, in highlighting in a window a cluster of square patch errors, I also created more rectangle border errors in media densities in this Hubble view of an area in Doradus 30 in the LMC, a simple illustration showing how easy it is for patching errors to actually happen even with great skill and care on the part of pro image engineers trying to avoid bad patches. The point is, most such errors do not turn up in an image until the image is highly enhanced in search of secret details.
When seeing what it can take to collage together an image to get a large wide field view taken in many tiny patches of much smaller field of view, it is understandable how patching errors can occur with such regularity in the most carefully crafted images particularly Hubbles. Here is an example of image collage which was a step in the process of producing final images for a Doradus/Tarantula
