81. White Dwarfs And Novae
Short on text, but contains excellent images, diagrams and a table of the brightest white dwarfs

White Dwarfs
and Novae
(Section Not Complete) Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar predicted while a very young man in the 1930s that there was a limiting mass for white dwarf stars: no white dwarf could be stable against gravitational collapse if it exceeded this mass, which is about 1.4-1.5 solar masses, depending on the detailed composition of the white dwarf. The idea was not very well received by many established astronomers, who considered it absurd that a white dwarf could have a limiting mass. Much later, Chandrasekhar's brilliant idea was completely accepted within the astrophysics community and he eventually won a Nobel Prize for his deep theoretical contributions to astrophysics. Today, all textbooks on stars describe the Chandrasekhar Limiting Mass for white dwarfs as central to the structure of white dwarfs (Ref)
Cooling of White Dwarfs The adjacent image shows a white dwarf embedded in a planetary nebula that may be the hottest star kn own. Its surface appears to have a temperature of about 200,000 degrees C, which is 30 times the surface temperature of the Sun (Ref) . Even though the temperature is so high, this is a dying star. It has used all its nuclear fuel and can no longer produce energy by thermonuclear fusion.

83. Multiwavelength Messier Museum - An Astronomical Gallery And Tutorial
A multiwavelength view of objects in space from NASA's infrared astronomy center (IPAC). A detailed tutorial accompanies each set of images. This site will be regularly updated with new objects.
http://sirtf.caltech.edu/Education/Messier/tie.html
Welcome to the Multiwavelength Messier Museum! For selected astronomical objects in the famous Messier catalog , we have gathered images taken at different wavelengths by a variety of ground-based and space-borne observatories. The human eye is a remarkable organ, but provides a mere sliver of insight into the richness of information that all celestial phenomena provide. If we wish to understand the cosmos and its spectacular objects, we must collect and study radiation throughout the entire electromagnetic spectrum . With multiwavelength data in hand, we can gain a more complete picture of celestial objects, and learn much about how scientific research often requires the skills of a good detective! The primary purpose of this online Museum is to introduce users to the wealth of data available at wavelengths beyond the familiar visible light we are accustomed to seeing. You will discover some important characteristics of astronomical phenomena, and learn about which types of radiation are best suited to studying certain objects. By comparing images of objects obtained at different wavelengths, you will be able to interpret interesting features, and discover why certain objects emit little or no radiation at some wavelengths. As you tour the Museum, take time to examine the images, make comparisons, and think carefully about the information accompanying the images. You can either visit your favorite objects, or tour all of the galleries from start to finish. Enjoy your tour!

87. IfA -- Comet Hale-Bopp
Includes news and images obtained by University of Hawaii astronomers.
http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/images/hale-bopp/hale-bopp.html
Comet Hale-Bopp
at the UH Institute for Astronomy
C omet Hale-Bopp is now moving away from the inner Solar System. As it receives less energy from the Sun, the cometary activity is slowing down, the tail is disappearing and the comet will rapidly become too faint to be observed with small telescope. While this marks the end of Hale-Bopp's public performance, it is not the end of the story: we plan to continue observing it as long as possible. The decrease and cessation of a comet's activity give very interesting information on its composition and history, so we are trying to observe comets as far as possible from the Sun. A typical comet nucleus has a diameter of 1 to 10 km, and is extremely dark, so that task is far from easy and requires big telescopes and very long exposures; in the case of Comet Hale-Bopp, we hope a to have an easier task, as we know that the nucleus is very bright. For more information, check out Karen Meech's Distant Comet Reseach page , and for an example of tricky observation, have a look at the faintest Solar System object ever observed: Comet Halley at the distance of Uranus , which is also the last image of that comet.

I wonder whether fractal images are not touching the very structure of our brains. Is there a clue in the infinitely regressing character of such images that illuminates our perception of art? Could it be that a fractal image is of such extraordinary richness, that it is bound to resonate with our neuronal circuits and stimulate the pleasure I infer we all feel?
