SPRING, 1999 TOPIC:
GALAXIES AND COSMOLOGY
Introduction
This semester's Topics In Astronomy course deals with the large-scale organzation of the universe. We will spend several weeks discussing the structure and origin of the galaxies. We will also deal with the universe at large, trying to understand some of the fundamestal problems of cosmology, the observations astronomers use to address these problems, and some of the latest results in the field. It's a highly speculative area of science, but one that is as exciting as it is challenging. Class Meetings
Class meets from 8:00 to 8:50 AM, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Masters Hall Seminar Room, MH 201. Readings
The principal textbooks for this semester will be: by Debra Meloy Elmegreen, Prentice-Hall, 1998 Cosmology: The Science of the Universe by Edward R. Harrison, Cambridge University Press, 1981 In addition, readings will be assigned from a number of popular magazines and popular books on science. Syllabus
The syllabus is flexible, as this is a course under development. An updated outline of the classes and other important dates in the course is given on a separate page. Click here to see the syllabus Grading
Grades in the course will be assigned according to the following formula:

Welcome to our Stack Show-case! You might see a book in the catalogue listed as STACK . These are books which are housed behind the scenes in the Central Library - items that the Library definitely wants to keep, but for some reason (e.g. older condition, or not in as high demand) the open shelf is not the right place for them. Most can be borrowed. Please ask at the enquiries counter on the Second Floor and staff will be happy to retrieve them. This web-page will highlight some of these nearly forgotten treasures, and be updated with a new stack topic every two months. The author's selections and recommendations of these golden oldies are entirely idiosyncratic!

Design in Nature, by J. Bell Pettigrew (3 vol)

    (class: 570)
A seminal work focusing on patterns found in nature. Its strength is in its ability to present the breadth of design elements across a whole variety of organic and inorganic subjects. Some of its findings may well be long superseded, but treated in a serendipitous fashion, a highly informative, entertaining and well illustrated read.
