NEWS ALERT March 13, 2003
Sometimes, Bad Astronomy really ticks me off. Some person is circulating images supposedly from an Israeli satellite showing the Space Shuttle Columbia breaking up. I have received over a dozen emails about this. These images are fake . In fact, they are from the opening scenes of the awful movie "Armageddon" . The pictures are real enough looking that people are wondering if they are legitimate, but they are not. Think about it: it's been over a month since the Shuttle was destroyed. Why would it take so long to get these images? The image above is one of the images circulated. I just spent the day at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, where they push technology and engineering of atmospheric and space flight to its limits. To see such wonderous things as I did today, then to find email like this in my Inbox, well, it really makes me mad. I can hope this had some innocent start, like someone misinterpreting the pictures, but these things are usually done as a sick joke, then get spread around the web. Feh. As always, when you hear or read something that smells of urban legend, check out

http://sciastro.net/portia/
This is me (Susan Carroll, a.k.a. Portia on #sciastro) with the REAL Portia, who may look like a dog, but is actually a little person in a Pug suit. My love of the night sky began nearly 40 years ago, when I was a little girl. My father would take me outside at night and point out the constellations, like Orion, Casseiopeia, and of course, the asterism known as the Big Dipper. He showed me the phases of the moon, and explained why the sun moved further north during the summer months. Among the many ideas he instilled in me was the fact that the sky is up there for everyone to enjoy; one doesn't need expensive equipment, or a lot of formal education in science and astronomy, to appreciate the splendors of the night sky. All that is required is interest. I have taken this to heart and some of the most rewarding times in my life have been those opportunities I've had to share my love of astronomy with others, particularly those who are new to it. Here, then, is a collection of photographs, articles, anecdotes, and advice that I have accumulated during my years as an amateur astronomer. I hope you enjoy them; that you find them useful, informative, and perhaps amusing. There will be additions from time to time, so check back often. And if I am able, through these pages, to inspire just a small handful of you to become interested in astronomy, then I have accomplished my mission.
AstroPhotography
- This has been a passion of mine for many years, but frankly, I'm a rank amateur! However, over the years I have managed to get lucky every now and then!

Collection Development
Space Physics and Astronomy Debra K. Bailey debrae@rice.edu [General policy] Current Collection Policy:
Space physics and astronomy is a relatively new field, and researchers rely on the physics collection as well as materials specific to the field of space science. The early physics collection is very strong, dating back to the earliest days of Rice Institute. The physics collection is strong in publications from scholarly societies and emphasizes nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, quantum electronics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, surface physics, and theoretical physics. The space physics collection emphasizes ground and space-based observational astronomy, theoretical astrophysics and space plasma physics, Earth system science, spacecraft development and data analysis. The scope of the collection is broad, and some undergraduate materials are purchased to support the curriculum. However, this material is fairly limited. Materials are purchased in all formats. There is an increasing amount of information published electronically, and new electronic journals and compact disks are being added at a rapid rate. All languages are purchased, with an emphasis on English language materials. However, materials published in German and French are also routinely acquired. Materials are acquired from a wide variety of publishers, with an emphasis on major scientific publishers such as Springer-Verlag, Wiley, and others. There are a significant number of monographic series on standing order, particularly from scholarly societies such as the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and the International Astronomical Union. Recent materials are emphasized, but retrospective materials are purchased when requested or to replace missing materials.

http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/sas/aboutus.html
ABOUT US Our Purpose The purpose of the SAS is to educate students and the public about astronomy, bring together undergraduate astronomy majors with professors and research opportunities, and further the interest of individuals who are not astronomy majors. Towards this end, we hold regular meetings, public observing nights, sponsor lectures, provide tutoring in Astronomy classes, and participate in Inreach/Outreach programs for local primary and secondary school students. Activities
Tutoring

During the Fall and Winter terms the SAS officers hold weekly free tutoring sessions for students in 100-level astronomy classes. For the Winter 2003 term, tutoring will be held on the 9th floor of the Dennison Building in room 949 from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. every Wednesday from January 15th until April 16th. Public Observing Nights
One to two Fridays per month, SAS runs public observing nights at the Angell Hall Observatory on central campus. This event is free and open to U of M students, faculty, and staff as well as the general public. Our facilities include a 0.4 meter Ritchey Cretien reflector in the dome, and 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes on the rooftop. We also have acess to a computer lab on the 5th floor for visitors to try out planetarium software or surf the web for astronomy related resources. In the future we plan to add to our "rainy day" Open House agendas and include multimedia presentations to be given by SAS members on a variety of astronomy-related topics.
