, and Robert Wood Some specific areas of research are: Electron Scattering (Edwards) Dynamical properties of multi-electron atoms and molecules are experimentally studied through electron scattering. Fast collisions that produce multi-electron excitations are an important tool in studying electron-electron correlations. Steric effects in the ionization and excitation of simple molecules by fast electrons are studied. These are experiments in which the orientation of the molecular axis is known at the time of the excitation process or in the decay from an excited state. Electron Transfer (Heil, Stancil)

The group uses a network of Sun and Linux/Pentium workstations and an extensive set of software for research purposes, such as:
      • N-body and hydrodynamic modeling of disk galaxy dynamics
      • AIPS and IRAF data analysis packages (observational research)

Liquid Crystals This laboratory uses a variety of equipment to explore the properties of liquid crystals. Argon ion lasers help determine the size and spectroscopy of fluids, while fluctuations in the fluids are probed. An integrated microscopic imaging system in a Tesla electromagnet explores fluid responses to electric and magnetic fields. We have a dedicated microcomputer for imaging and analysis.

    Research programs
Astronomers search for scientific answers to some of humanity's most fundamental questions: How and when did the stars, planets, and galaxies form? What threats do we face from the Sun and other celestial bodies? What will be the ultimate fate of the universe? Scientists at the Institute for Astronomy (IfA) study the heavens in a attempt to answer these and other questions.. The Institute for Astronomy is one of the world's leading astronomical research centers. Its broad-based program includes studies of the Sun, planets, and stars, as well as interstellar matter, galaxies, and cosmology. Most IfA astronomers use the giant telescopes atop Mauna Kea and Haleakala to collect faint light, and infrared and submillimeter radiation from distant objects. They also use, and support space observatories, such as the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra (an X-ray astronomy satellite), to make observations that cannot be made from the ground.

    Cambridge University
Wilberforce Road Cambridge CB3 0LA UK Brief Biography Prof. John D. Barrow was born in London in 1952. He graduated in Mathematics from Durham University in 1974, received his doctorate in Astrophysics from Oxford University in 1977 (supervised by Dennis Sciama), and held positions at the Universities of Oxford and California at Berkeley before taking up a position at the Astronomy Centre, University of Sussex in 1981. He was professor of astronomy and Director of the Astronomy Centre at the University of Sussex until 1999. He is the author of 300 articles in cosmology and astrophysics, and is a recipient of the Locker Prize for Astronomy and the 1999 Kelvin Medal of the Royal Glasgow Philosophical Society. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree by the University of Hertfordshire in 1999. He recently held a Senior 5-year Research Fellowship from the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council of the UK. In July 1999 he took up a new appointment as Research Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Cambridge and Director of the Millennium Mathematics Project, a new initiative to improve the understanding and appreciation of mathematics and its applications amongst young people and the general public.

These pages contain material of value to astronomy students and over 300,000 NationalAeronautics and Space Administration images from eight research centers.
    http://www.nrao.edu/intro/teaching.html
    Resources for Teachers
    • Bringing Your Class to the VLA: Maximizing the Educational Experience How to arrange guided tours of the VLA for your class, and how to use the VLA, both before and after the tour, as a means of bringing real-world science into classroom activities.
    • ASTRONOMY NOTES These notes were created by Nick Strobel for the introductory astronomy courses he teaches. They are offered to the net as a resource in astronomy education.
    • Virtual Laboratory-University of Oregon To provide students with truely interactive texts, a series of experiments has been created using Java to demonstrate the application of this method of teaching. These experiments are meant to be conceptual interfaces to the equations of physics and/or represent interaction with data that simulates a real physical experiment. These are targetted at physics classes for non-majors where we currently have no physical lab sections due to resource constraints.
    • Astronomy 202: Our Home in the Solar System From Cornell University, Spring 1997
    • Physics 22 This is the second semester course of Introductory Astronomy. Physics 22 concentrates on the physics of the stars and galaxies, their evolution and cosmology. Pulsars, neutron stars, black holes, quasars, spiral galaxies, particle physics and relativity will all be covered.
