A Guide for Undergraduate and Graduate Students
The Department of Physics, Applied Physics, and Astronomy’s graduate program leads to the Master of Science in Physics and Doctor of Philosophy in Physics degrees in several research areas summarized below. For graduate students specializing in Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Master of Science degree is available either in Astronomy or in Physics with specialization in Astronomy. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is available in Physics with specialization in Astronomy. Graduate study in physics at Rensselaer prepares students for a variety of careers, including industrial research and development, research at government laboratories, and university research and teaching. Both fundamental and applied research are conducted in the department, often in collaboration with researchers from other Rensselaer departments, industry, or the National Laboratories. The Physics Department’s intellectual climate is characterized by lively interactions between theorists and experimentalists with common research interests. Graduate course work is supplemented through colloquia and several weekly departmental seminars. As an important part of their graduate education, students collaborate with faculty members to make original research contributions in their area of specialization.

Jacqueline Hewitt
Gravitational lenses are a useful tool for many astrophysical problems. Professor Jaqueline Hewitt is applying them to the investigation of the geometry of the universe, the mass distribution in galaxies, and the supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies. Another research interest is searching for evidence for early structure formation and reionization in the very young universe. At these early times in the history of the universe, when star and/or galaxy formation was just beginning, inhomogeneities in the neutral and ionized hydrogen should have produced signatures observable now in the highly redshifted 21 cm line of hydrogen.
Professor Hewitt is also interested in the development of instrumentation for radio astronomy. She is currently involved in developing radio telescopes with large aperture which represent the "next generation" in radio astronomical instrumentation. In particular, with the

MIT is a partner in the Magellan consortium . Of its two 6.5-m telescopes on Cerro Las Campanas in Chile's Atacama desert, the first, the Baade Telescope, was dedicated on December 9, 2000, and began science operations on February 14, 2001. The second, the Clay telescope, began science operations in September, 2002. The Magellan Instant Camera (MagIC) , the first instrument built specifically for the telescopes, was commissioned in March 2001 by a group led by James Elliot Using Magellan, MIT astronomers are able to obtain the sharpest astronomical images on earth without image correction (median seeing is 0.55 arcsec, and the best seeing disks are smaller than 0.30 arcsec). Paul Schechter is leading an adaptive optics program to improve the image quality even further over a large field of view without reliance upon bright reference stars. The excellent seeing and large focal plane also make the Magellan telescopes an outstanding facility for astronomical spectroscopy.
