Since 1926, planetariums have been providing immersive environments for audiences to see the night sky. The aim of these establishments was not only to educate people about our observable galaxy, but also to give them an immersive, entertaining, and educational experience. Historically, this experience has always been in black and white, using fiber or calligraphic lights that show star fields. In the new millennium, scientists are making dramatic discoveries about our universe. Planetariums are challenged to keep their content relevant and exciting, particularly as a new computer-savvy generation grows up with easy access to the Internet, including the latest imagery from space. Computer-based education and games have made this generation accustomed to a lot of interactivity. In contrast, previous generations grew up learning about events in a very linear fashion, through radio and television. In many cases, the changing expectations of the public, combined with ever-increasing information and numerous alternative entertainment options, have led to declining popularity of and low attendance at planetariums. But the International Space Station and the continual presence of humans in space are rejuvenating interest in space exploration and planetariums. In the 1970s, a similar rise in the public's interest in planetariums was correlated with man's trip to the moon.

Barco's dome projection solutions complement the dedicated space projector, allowing for stunning special effects, mastered on super black backgrounds. Being immersed in an accurate simulation of the night sky is probably the most memorable experience for planetarium visitors. Multiple projector images provide background and help structure the visitor's experience. Floating in the starfield, with no discernable frame or border, they become part of the grand illusion. It's great fun.

  • 40. The Fels Planetarium @ The Franklin Institute
Part of Franklin Institute Science Museum located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One of the oldest planetariums in the USA.
    http://sln.fi.edu/tfi/info/fels.html
    Brand new technology and design!
In 1933, Samuel S. Fels contributed funds so that the new Franklin Institute could have a planetarium, only the second in the United States. The Planetarium's popularity continues today; it has provided an experience for more than 9 million visitors and school children.
The Planetarium's brand new design will optimize the viewing experience. The renovations include replacement of the original 40,000 pound-plus, perforated stainless steel dome, built in 1933. The new premium seamless dome is lighter and is 60-feet in diameter. Manufactured by Spitz Inc. of Chadds Ford, PA, the dome is the first of its kind in the United States.
New enhancements include a state-of-the-art aluminum dome that envelopes the audience and provides the ultimate screen for cosmic projections, upgraded video projection and super-fidelity systems, theater controls, lighting system, carpeting and theater seating, and ADA accessibility. The planetarium is also outfitted for visitors who are hearing impaired.
