ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. Steven Joseph Bartkowski stood in anonymity Tuesday morning at Marsh Creek Country Club's first tee. Former NFL QB Steve Bartkowski was a two-time All-Pro. (Mark Cubbedge) There were no jumbotrons or jumbo linemen, no adoring crowds or giant foam fingers waving No. 1. In fact, there was no evidence the man staring down the marsh-lined fairway was the 1975 National Football League Rookie of the Year, a two-time All-Pro and two-time NFC passing leader who quarterbacked the Atlanta Falcons to the 1980 division championship. "That means absolutely zippo out here," Bartkowski said. "There are guys who have played this game a whole lot longer than I have and are much more accomplished than I am, and I'm trying to play against them to get a chance to play against the big boys." This week Bartkowski is just another pupil pursuing the riches of the Champions Tour, formerly known as the Senior PGA Tour, as qualifying school gets under way at five locations around the country. He's also one of two professional athletes who starred in another sport here this week in the nation's oldest city competing for a chance to advance to the finals.

PRO FOOTBALL GREATS: BY THE NUMBERS
This is a research effort I took on a few years ago and continue to delve back into from time-to-time. While looking through this list of players, keep in mind that this is completely an inexact science. I have found that locating uniform numbers for some of the pre-World War II players is a real challenge - particularly the numbers for players on the many now-defunct franchises of the 1920s and 30s. Note that this list also includes players from the old All American Football Conference (AAFC), the original AFL and the AFL of the 1960s. Also note that many players have a star by their name, this indicates players who wore more than one jersey number. In cases of players who did wear more than one number, I have generally tried to associate that player with the number he wore for the longest tenure or the number he wore during his greatest success. During the early days of professional football, uniform numbers meant very little to players and spectators. In fact, during the 1920s, very few teams even assigned jersey numbers. Those teams who did use numbers paid very little attention to them. Players, during that time, often switched numbers from year-to-year and even game-to-game. I have, for example, no less than five or six numbers listed for many early greats like Ernie Nevers, Ray Flaherty, Mike Michalske and Cal Hubbard - only to name a few. If you notice the obvious omission of some of these plyers, it is probably due to the fact that I haven't been able to accurately determine a number to list him with.

Dallas has not owned a No. 1 selection since plucking Russell Maryland from Miami in 1991. The Cowboys also had the top spot in 1989 (Troy Aikman) and 1974 (Ed 'Too Tall" Jones). AMERICAN CENTURY CELEBRITY GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course July 19, 2002 An interview with: Q. Did you have fun today?
JOHN ELWAY: Yeah, it was fun. Played 16 good holes . Knocked it in the water on 10 with a perfect lie with a 9-iron, just chunked it in the water. And then had a 7-iron into 18 and hit it in the water again. So I had a chance to have a real good day, but I was happy with where it ended up. Q. Are you surprised at the high scores; that your name is on the leaderboard right now? JOHN ELWAY: No, not really. I think that you know, the golf course is playing longer. Each year we seemed to get pushed back farther and farther. So the greens were awfully soft and soft and fast. So the golf course is plush, and it's just playing a lot longer than we're used to. Q. 54-hole tournaments, as opposed to 36-hole JOHN ELWAY: It's great. I think that you can play okay the first day and still be in the hunt. I think that I'd much rather play 54 holes. You look at the good golfers, it's obviously going to be an advantage for Dan Quinn and Rick Rhoden and those type of people. If other guys can put three good rounds together, at least you don't feel like you shoot yourself out of it the first day. Q. Do you feel like you've got a

MODERATOR: Rick Rhoden, 4-under 68, and Jack Wagner 3-under 69. We've seen this act in here before, guys. RICK RHODEN: Hopefully, you'll see it again. Q. What did you hit into 18? RICK RHODEN: 8-iron. I've never been we were just talking about that. That ball just exploded off my driver . I wish I knew how it happened. That ball went 30 yards further than any ball I hit all day. Q. How many yards? RICK RHODEN: 169 downwind. Q. What about the putt? RICK RHODEN: I'd putt that putt the same way again. I'd play it inside the right edge to go left. That ball started bouncing. The last couple of greens were kind of soft and the balls were bouncing a little bit, and just bounced off-line. I can't complain about my putting today. It's the best I've ever putted. I made six birdie putts, one on 16 from about 12 feet. So I've got no complaints about my putting. Q. How were the scoring conditions RICK RHODEN: I thought it was harder today than yesterday. Only difference was today you could hit balls up by the hole and they were not spinning back 20 feet; so you had a chance to gauge your shots better.
