Charles Phillip (Chuck) Bednarik Photos courtesy of AutographedToYou.com Charles Phillip (Chuck) Bednarik was born on May 1, 1925 in Bethlehem, PA. Chuck, nicknamed "Concrete Charley" spent all of his 14 professional NFL career years with the Philadelphia, Eagles. In 1960 the Eagles line was depleted with injuries forcing Bednarik to play offensive and defensive position as center and linebacker. In no small part that effort lead the 1960 Eagles to their second NFL Championship. In appreciation the Eagles organization gave him a bonus payment of $250.00. Chuck Bednarik played for the University of Pennsylvania from 1945 to 1949. He was a two time All-American playing center and linebacker. Bednarik was the very first pick in the NFL in 1949, selected by the Philadelphia Eagles. He played for 14 years with the Eagles as center and linebacker, and was All-Pro eight times and played in the Pro Bowl eight times. In the 1954 Pro Bowl, he was selected as the MVP. He was a member of two World Championship teams, 1949 and 1960. In the 1960 championship game, Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers, he played 58 ½ minutes and made the game saving tackle on the last play. Chuck retired in 1962 at the age of 37. He was elected to the Pro Hall of Fame in 1967 and the College Hall of Fame in 1969. His other honors include All Time 50 Year Team, The 75 Year Two Way Team, and in 1999, the John Madden All Millennium Team. As Chuck says, "There is nothing else to be had…only Heaven."

Wednesday February 05, 2003; 10:06 AM As if struggling with 11 opponents each game was not enough, both Adam Bednarik and Michael Meggett carry additional weight on their backs during games. There the potential load is right above their numbers. Their surnames. Yet neither Bednarik nor Meggett, two of West Virginia University's football recruits who signed Mountaineer letters-of-intent this morning, view their respective heredity as burdens. Both have cousins who in various eras were well- known NFL stars. "If anything, I think it was good," Adam Bednarik said Tuesday. "It's an honor to carry that last name. People recognize me by that name." "It's kind of like the best of both worlds," Michael Meggett said. "Some look at you because of the name. Once I get the look, they see I am legit." Bednarik and Meggett were among more than 20 athletes expected to cast their future lots as NCAA Division I-A players with WVU from the Big East Conference. Mountaineer Coach Rich Rodriguez announced the official class at an afternoon press conference.

    Courier Times
    E-mail
Faded Glory Chuck Bednarik isn't the only former Eagle great who feels that time has passed him by. To read about the life of hall of famer Steve Van Buren, click here Chuck Bednarik, 75, one of the greatest football players of all time, knows he'd be making millions if he played in the NFL today. That doesn't make Bednarik so angry. It's his pension that does. He estimates his pension at $13,000 a year - a mere pittance of what he thinks old-timers, like himself and Steve Van Buren, deserve. "It boggles my mind," Bednarik said. "If I would've played baseball, I'd be making $60,000 a year in pension." He isn't entirely wrong. A player who played four years in the NFL during the late 1940s and 1950s - Bednarik's era - would get $400 a month, while a Major League Baseball player who played four years during that same era would receive per month a minimum of $1,434. In baseball, the pension also increases with additional seasons played.

College football still earns his allegiance. Living just 12 miles from the Lehigh University football stadium in his hometown of Bethlehem, Bednarik makes a point of attending every home game there. He goes to at least one Penn game a season and continues to root for the Quakers from afar.
