Morgan Honors Four Football Legends
By Brian Cox
Black College Wire Photo by Cleveland Browns Len Ford Morgan State University has honored its legends by retiring four jerseys of football greats in the storied history of Morgan football. The tributes to Willie Lanier, Len Ford, Leroy Kelly and Roosevelt Brown, all NFL Hall of Famers, were made at a luncheon Oct. 25. Lanier, Kelly and Brown attended; Ford's daughter, Deborah, represented Ford. Brown was an HBCU All-American with Morgan from 1951 to 1952, and he played under legendary coach Eddie Hurt. Brown began a 13-season career with the New York Giants at age 20. He was selected as an All-NFL team member eight times between 1956 and 1963. Brown also played in nine Pro Bowls and was the NFL's lineman of the year in 1956. Kelly played with the Bears under coach Earl Banks. He was named to the All-NFL team five times and was also selected to play in six Pro Bowls. He played professionally for the Cleveland Browns and took over as running back when the legendary Jim Brown retired as all-time leading rusher in 1965. In 1967, Kelly led the league in rushing yards (1,205), yards per carry (5.1) and touchdowns (11). In 1968, he led the league in rushing yards (1,269) and touchdowns (16). He retired with career totals of 7,724 yards and 74 touchdowns. The late Ford was a classic two-way player with Coach Hurt in the 1940s. He was with the Dons in the old days of the American Athletic Football Conference. After the AAFC folded, he played with the Cleveland Browns, who soon converted him to a defensive end. Using unique defensive tactics, they fully tapped into his pass-rushing talent.

UAB Edges Army, 29-26 Willie Quinnie pulls down three touchdowns and racks up a season-high 159 yards receiving. Oct 26, 2002 Final Stats By CONNOR ENNIS
Associated Press Writer WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP)
- UAB receiver Willie Quinnie didn't like his team's chances when Army took the lead with 1:29 left in the game. "It didn't look good," Quinnie said. Eighty seconds later, it looked much better. Darrell Hackney threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Quinnie with eight seconds left as UAB defeated Army 29-26 on Saturday. It marked the first road win this season for UAB (4-4, 3-1 Conference USA). It was a tough loss for Army (0-8, 0-6), which seemed poised to win its first game of the season when

Monday, 19 March, 2001, 15:10 GMT Bill McLaren on Brown
BBC Rugby commentator Bill McLaren remembers the inspirational career of Gordon Brown.
No doubt that Gordon Brown was one of the truly great Scottish lock forwards. He not only presented impressive bulk at six foot five, 16 stone, 12 pounds, but he could shift and had exceptional handling skills as borne out by that record for a forward of eight tries on the Lions' sensational tour of South Africa in 1974. Gordon had the build of a bison and whilst he had a gentle manner off the field - softly spoken, courteous and good for a laugh, a real gentle man in fact, he was a genuine hard man on the field. And he proved the perfect foil as boiler house partner to Willie John McBride on two Lions Tours. As Willie John has said: "Those Lions took no prisoners." And they were prepared to meet all forms of aggression in similar style and, partly as a result of that, proved wonderfully successful. I can vividly recall one crucial Scottish club championship match when Gordon's club - West of Scotland - came to play my own home town club, Hawick.

93. American Football League Hall Of Fame
PLEASE NOTE THE AMERICAN football LEAGUE HALL OF FAME IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. 2003American football League Hall of Fame All rights reserved.
http://www.conigliofamily.com/AFLHallofFame.htm
The "Pro Football Hall of Fame" in Canton, Ohio, supposedly represents all of professional football. Yet, of its two hundred and sixteen members, only ONE was never in the NFL. That one, Buffalo's Billy Shaw, played his entire career in the AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE. Yet, at his induction, he wore a yellow coat emblazoned with the NFL logo. Great players like Tom Sestak, Lionel Taylor, Johnny Robinson, Abner Haynes, and dozens of other American Football League stars are ignored by the "Pro Football Hall of Fame", because they played in the wrong league.
This, then, is a Hall of Fame devoted to the players of a league that had a profound impact on professional football; a sport that today reflects the AFL's influence in everything but name.
Our Hall of Fame list of American Football League players, coaches, and contributors includes those who, against tremendous odds, got into the "Pro Football Hall of Fame".
BUT IT ALSO INCLUDES (WITH NAMES IN BLUE ) THE AFL STARS WHO UNTIL NOW, HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE HONOR THAT THEY SO RICHLY DESERVE.
