Fourth and Inches: The FedEx/Poulan Weed Eater Football Packet Author: Brian M. Hight TOSSUPS:
  • In 1983 and 1984, they appeared in 2 straight Hall of Fame Bowls under coach Jerry Claiborne. Babe Parilli led them to the a Sugar Bowl appearance in the 1950 season and an appearance in the Cotton Bowl the next season, although head coach Bear Bryant may have played a role in their success as well. They employed a former Crimson Tide coach in the 90’s, but Bill Curry was fired after making only one bowl appearance. FTP, name this SEC school, now known for Hal Mu mme and Tim Couch. It last occurred in the NFL in 1941, being done by Lions star Dutch Clark. Jim McMahon practiced it, but never got to try it in a game. Charley Brickley and Jim Thorpe were known for their prowess in doing this. FTP, name this skill, which can earn yo u 4 points if done correctly in Arena Football. He was originally signed straight out of the Marines by the L.A. Rams in 1953 and then picked up off of the waiver wire by the Colts, where he was noted for being Art Donavan’s counterpart and for breaking Gino Marchetti’s leg during the 1958 NFL Cham pionship Game. However, he had developed into an All-Pro defensive tackle during that time and had a great season with the Steelers in 1962. But it is in his death that we know about him. FTP, name this aptly-nicknamed defensive tackle whose death from an apparent drug overdose in 1963 is still shrouded in mystery. Two answers required. The moment that forever linked them occurred on August 12, 1978. With 1:26 remaining in the second quarter, Steve Grogan called "94 Slant". However, he threw a high pass to his intended receiver, who was in the zone covered by th e free safety who was determined to stop the Patriots’ slant passes. FTP, name the free safety, an Ohio State product known as the "Assassin" and the New England receiver he permanently paralyzed on that night.

Sam Houston 26, Midwestern State 23
    Saturday, Sept 7, 2002
From The Huntsville Item By Brian Lacy/Assistant Sports Editor It wasn't pretty for two quarters it was downright ugly but the Sam Houston State Bearkats picked up the intensity and improved their execution in the second half Saturday night to rally for a 26-23 win over Midwestern State at Bowers Stadium. "It feels good to get a win," said sophomore wide receiver Corey Zeno, who scored a key touchdown on a 12-yard reverse on the final play of the third quarter. "As long as we win, that's all that matters." SHSU coach Ron Randleman said the Kats showed they have a long way to go before they can be considered a great team, but their second-half performance gave him reason to believe they can improve. "I thought we showed a real spark for a period of time in the second half on offense, defense and special teams," Randleman said. "It was by far the best we've looked all year." The Bearkats scored three touchdowns in a five-minute span to erase a 14-3 deficit. The third touchdown came with 13:19 left in the fourth quarter when junior Dejuan Davis blocked a punt and redshirt freshman Jackie Brown returned it 11 yards to the end zone.

As a pro football wide receiver, the conditions I face on the job are certainly different than most. But the reality is… many people are just as uncomfortable with contact lenses and glasses as I was. It had become increasingly awkward for me to play football wearing contacts to correct my 20/800 eyes, and I was concerned they would affect my performance. And you don’t see many football players wearing glasses! The wind, dirt, sun and rain make it hard enough to see on the field, but what was even worse was trying to keep my eyes opened and focused on the ball without my contacts drying out. Thanks to LaserOne, I no longer have to worry about contact lenses getting in the way of my game. LaserOne is first class. In a word, professional. The staff and doctors answered all my questions and made me feel comfortable throughout the entire process. My surgeon was great. He told me what to expect and talked to me throughout the surgery, which only took a few minutes. As a pro football player, I’m used to physical pain. So, you can imagine my surprise when I experienced no pain during my laser vision procedure. For a few hours afterwards, my eyes felt a little scratchy and dry, but that soon disappeared.

The house that the 'Immaculate Reception' built Franco Harris has heard mention of a plaque
Frenchy Fuqua figures it deserves more than that much more than a hunk of bronze and a pithy little inscription. After all, isn't Pittsburgh the city of champions where half of the Forbes Field wall remains (where Bill Mazeroski's 1960 World Series-winning homer owns its personal commemorative spot) and where even that old home plate merits a marker in a University of Pittsburgh hallway? So Fuqua wants similar permanence. He wants something big and bold and shrine-like when Three Rivers Stadium gets torn down and made into a parking lot 28 years to the week after its most famous freeze frame its signature moment in sports history. He wants a sanctuary to the Immaculate Reception. "That's holy ground," said the former Steelers fullback, the guy who collided with history, football and Oakland's Jack "They Call Me Assassin" Tatum near the game's end on Dec. 23, 1972, a day that lives in perpetuity far beyond Pittsburgh. "No matter what happens, when they tear Three Rivers down, a monument ought to be built there," Fuqua said recently from his office at the

Game day: Fans bid fond farewell to Three Rivers Brian Murphy
The Sporting News PITTSBURGH As part of the celebration surrounding the Steelers' last season at Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh fans voted on the greatest moment in the stadium's 30-year history. It wasn't even close. "Franco's Immaculate Reception," Steelers fan John Flanigan said without hesitation. "At that time it was the greatest play ever. It's still the greatest play." It's described in the NFL Insider, the league's stadium program, as The Immaculate Reception (12/23/72). The most famous play in Steelers and possibly NFL history. That's it. No recap of what happened. No retelling of the story of Jack Tatum and John "Frenchy" Fuqua and Franco Harris. No need.

But the Giants made a determined goal-line stand, got the ball on their own 5-yard line, and drove downfield for a TD. Football: Mays Remains on Payton Watch List
    Philadelphia, Pa.
Youngstown State senior tailback P.J. Mays remains one of 16 Division I-AA offensive players who are on the Payton Award Watch List, the Sports Network announced on Wednesday. The Payton Award is given annually to the top offensive player in Division I-AA.
Through four games, Mays has 446 yards rushing and has scored four touchdowns. The honors will be presented at the 16th annual I-AA College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 19 in Chattanooga, Tenn., on the eve of the 2002 I-AA National Championship.
Five new players grace the updated "Payton Watch" list, and six revisions have been made to the "Buchanan Battle" list. On the Payton Watch, quarterback Brett Gordon (Villanova), running backs Muhammad Abdulqaadir (Southern Illinois) and Ryan Fuqua (Portland State), and wide receivers Ari Confesor (Holy Cross) and Willie Ponder (Southeast Missouri) have been selected as potential candidates. For the Buchanan, defensive backs Levy Brown (Florida A&M), Mark Kasmer (Dayton), Rashean Mathis (Bethune-Cookman) and Trey Young (Montana) have been added to the list along with linebacker Lernard Mack (Texas Southern) and defensive end Steve Anzalone (Northeastern).
The official "Payton Watch" and "Buchanan Battle" lists will undergo two additional revisions prior to the mailing of ballots on November 25th. The next revisions will be announced Oct. 30, and the third and final just prior to the mailing of ballots. The ballots will be mailed to the media and I-AA sports information directors selected for the voting process on Nov. 25, and will be due Monday, Dec. 2. The top three finalists (in terms of votes received) for the Walter Payton Award will be invited to attend the presentation in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Dec. 19, with the winner of that Award not announced until the event.
