Football Dreams have a Chance
As one of 240 college football players to be invited to try out for the NFL, Derby native and Clemson University senior Jason Gamble has a shot at a dream he's had since he was five.
"I'm a real competitive person," said Gamble, now 23. "I've always watched football on TV and wondered what it would be like to be a professional player."
Football has possessed Gamble from his days in the city's grade school recreation league, through his years at Derby High School, through two years at Hutchinson Junior College, and now at Clemson. He's been to five post season Bowl games two for Hutch, two Peach Bowls and the Blue-Gray Bowl for Clemson. On Jan. 23, he will be playing in the prestigious Senior Bowl.
Along the way, his skills have grown right along with his body at nearly 6-foot, 3-inches and tipping the scale at 300 pounds he is rated as one of the country's top centers. He'll have a chance to improve his rank at NFL tryouts called combines in mid-February. It will be an event that he's prepared for through hours and hours in the weight room.
Gamble bench presses 527 pounds and can power through a 1,165-pound leg sled. His best squat is nearly double his own weight. He proved he's one of Clemson's strongest men by setting two all-time Tiger weightlifting records and was named the college's Lifter of the Year in 1997. He's run a 4.94 second 40-yard-dash and has a vertical jump of 29 inches. A self-proclaimed happy-go-lucky guy, Gamble considers a laugh to be the cure for what ails him. But on the football field his demeanor darkens.

The Center of Attention
Clemson football player Jason Gamble. September 3, 1998 by Brian Hennessy From the heartland of America to the middle of the Clemson offensive line, Jason Gamble will certainly be the center of attention in 1998. Gamble, a native of Wichita, KS, will anchor a senior dominated offensive line at center for the Tigers this season. Among some of the 6-3, 300 pound center's impressive credentials include being named the Clemson Lifter-of-the-Year in 1997 and finishing first in "Psycho Circus," a grueling workout competition al the "World's Strongest Man" competition. "In Psycho Circus, we were matched up with a teammate so that all teams were equal," recalls Gamble. "We did reps of bench, clean, squat, and press as many times as possible in the span of 90 seconds. We also had to see how long we could hang from a bar. So you can see how it's just like the 'World's Strongest Man' competition. We wanted to add a little fun to the whole competition after all the hard work we put in." Gamble showed he's one of Clemson's strongest men by setting two all-time Tiger weightlifting records in the spring competition. His 527 pound bench press and 402 pound clean have never been lifted before by a Clemson gridder.

Sunday September 22, 2002
The Observer
Oh dear. What a sorry state Spanish and Italian football must be in if this game is representative of the best league in the world. But then why bother with entertaining football when results are everything to teams such as Southampton and Charlton down near the bottom of the Premiership table? Not all fans swallow everything, however, and that is probably why there were almost 10,000 fewer at St Mary's yesterday than there were for the visit of Chelsea less than a month ago. Maybe they knew two teams with only nine goals between them were going to serve up a stinker. How right they were. And how frustrating it must have been for Southampton manager Gordon Strachan, who attempted to arrest his side's slide by making three significant changes to his starting line-up - dropping goalkeeper Paul Jones, star striker James Beattie and club captain Jason Dodd - before urging his players on from the touchline throughout this excuse for a match. He gambled, but got nothing much in return. Southampton were better than Charlton, though, who started and finished just ahead of their hosts in the table. Charlton worked hard enough, but they engineered only two meaningful efforts all game. The first came when Claus Jensen had a free-kick acrobatically saved by Southampton's Finnish debutant Antti Niemi in first-half injury time. The second came from a low Chris Bart-Williams shot with 10 minutes to go

Save this column. Refer to it on the days you think I'm unfair to King Carl Peterson and his Kansas City Chiefs. It's more fun to be a football fan in Kansas City than it is in Indianapolis (or St. Louis). Chiefs fans have it better than Colts fans. I grew up in Indianapolis. I've played football inside Indy's Hoosier-turned-RCA Dome. I used to be a Colts fan. My dad is a Colts fan. My mother watches the Colts every Sunday. All my friends have caught Colts Fever now that the Colts look like the favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. I'd rather be a Chiefs fan. On any given Sunday, I'd rather be at Arrowhead Stadium than the RCA Dome. Give me Elvis Grbac, Bam Morris and Andre Rison over Peyton Manning, Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison. I'm serious. I realize I'm saying this in the middle of Slam King Carl Week, my favorite time of the year, the annual grieving season shortly after a Chiefs disappointment. I realize the Colts are on the brink of a Super Bowl appearance. But let's be real. Football is king here.

New England Patriots running back Robert Edwards (47) is knocked out of bounds by Indianapolis Colts linebacker Andre Royal, left, and free safety Jason Belser, right, three yards from a touchdown in the first quarter in Indianapolis Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998. New England scored on the next play.
Gamble on Edwards pays off Web posted Friday, November 6, 1998 By Tony Fabrizio
Morris News Service ATLANTA The New England Patriots gambled more ways than one earlier this year when they allowed star running back Curtis Martin leave via free agency and drafted Georgia's Robert Edwards. They were taking a chance they wouldn't fine a replacement Martin's caliber, and they were taking a huge risk by staking their future on a player with a history of injuries. But halfway through the NFL season and heading into Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons at Foxboro Stadium, the Patriots are quite pleased with Edwards. ``He has done a very nice job so far,'' Patriots coach Pete Carroll said. ``He's been very consistent. He runs hard, he's been good about his assignments, he's a competitor and all that, so we like all of the things he brings.''
