Virginia Bowl Games
Florida Citrus Bowl
January 1, 1990Orlando, Fla.
Illinois 31, Virginia 21
Virginia capped a season of giddy firsts with a New Year's Day showdown against Big Ten runner-up llinois in the 1990 Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla. Making their first-ever New Year's Day bowl appearance, the Cavaliers suffered only their third loss of the season with a 31-21 defeat. The setback did little, however, to detract from a success-filled campaign that included the school's first 10-win season as well as a share of Virginia's first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. Although the Illini had the advantage in total offense (497 yards to 322) and time of possession (34:30 to 25:30 ), the game remained close most of the way as the two teams combined for seven turnovers and failed to capitalize on a number of scoring opportunities. In the end, it was Illinoisbehind a solid running game and the passing of quarterback Jeff Georgethat prevailed. Georgethe NFL's number-one draft pick in 1990 by the Indianapolis Coltswas named the game's Most Valuable Player after completing 26 of 38 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once. Virginia's attack was centered around quarterback Shawn Moore, who accounted for 225 yards in total offense for the Cavaliers. He completed 17 of 27 passes for 191 yards while throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions. Moore also rushed 15 times for 34 yards and was named the team's offensive MVP.

Home Jon Jeremy Mac ... Mood Wrestling Football! It is about time to get back to football here at The Point. As we have shared in the past Jon is having a difficult time writing anything because of his new job. I have been spending my spare time writing Nuggets articles for ESPN.com. However, football is still America’s game and The Point needs to speak out about it whether I get fired for writing this at work or not.
Vikings Go Tits Up
ESPN recently ran a series of pieces on the demise of the Vikings. I have written about this before but everyone needs to know what went wrong. Any discussion about how good a team is starts with talent. The Vikings no longer have much of it. An article by Mel Kiper, Jr. about how poorly the Vikings have been drafting lately shows better than anything why they have dropped to the depths of the standings. Now for a deep thought…where a man thinks he is strongest there he is weakest. The one draft pick that Kiper and everyone else raves over is Culpepper. Daunte is a stud and just looking at the pick itself was a good selection. However, the fact that it was completely unnecessary to draft a QB there is completely ignored. The Vikings had Randall Cunningham coming off a career year and were about to sign Jeff George. I know Cunningham was older than most of the players fathers and they needed a replacement but the key to the Vikings’ future was Jeff George. I don’t care what anyone thinks about Jeff George he was the perfect QB for the Vikings system. I have been critical of George since I saw him in person, at what was then the Hoosier Dome, literally drop the football and go into the fetal position before getting tackled. It was a pathetic fold. I never had any respect for him after that. When he was signed by the Vikes I was worried about his head but was not as disgruntled as I thought I would be. He had the big time arm and chucker mentality that fit the Vikings offense perfectly. He had matured and was as competitive as anyone else on the field.
