    History
The Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in Canton, Ohio, on Sept. 7, 1963, with the induction of 17 charter members. Canton was chosen as the site because it was there that National Football League was founded (as the American Professional Football Association) in 1920. The hall originally consisted of two buildings. A third was added in 1971, a fourth in 1978. In its 51,000 square feet of space, the hall of fame includes an area tracing the history of pro football, an art gallery, a room devoted to enshrinees and their teams, and many special exhibits. The hall of fame library contains many original documents, press clippings, books and magazines. Members are chosen by a 36-member panel comprising one media person from each of the 30 NFL cities, a representative of the Professional Football Writers Association, and five at-large voters. To be eligible, players must be retired for five years. A coach becomes eligible immediately upon retirement. Contributors can still be active. Induction takes place during Hall of Fame weekend, in late July or early August, which includes an NFL exhibition game at Canton's Fawcett Field.

The Fearsome Foursome
By Anthony Holden
Special to SportsLine.com In modern-day football parlance, the word sack has become almost as well known as the word touchdown. When you talk about defense, interceptions and fumbles are exciting, but fans seem to get more of a rise when a hulking defensive end or cat-quick linebacker bursts through the line of scrimmage and maims a helpless quarterback. In the mid-1960s, a sack was something in which you bagged groceries. That is until Deacon Jones and the other three men of the Los Angeles Rams' front line - Rosey Grier, Lamar Lundy and Merlin Olsen - came along. Nicknamed The Fearsome Foursome, this unit - Grier was replaced by Roger Brown in 1967 - dominated opposing offensive lines and quarterbacks feared for their lives. "Every quarterback we met was so ready for the rush that he threw the ball quicker," said Olsen, who like Jones has been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "We didn't always get him, but we put the thought in his mind."

Shoutoutsports HeadSlap: The Life And Times Of Deacon Jones; An Inside Look at Football and Sports June 7, 2001
By: James Anderson I decided to take a different approach on what to write for my regular articles. The decision became easy when I visited my parents and saw the Deacon Jones book. I knew right off that this would be a great book to read based on Deacon’s career and his tendency to be very outspoken. This book deals with every difficult issue you can think of. It starts with prejudice of the 50’s – 70’s, life at a black college during that time, life as a black 14th round draft pick, dealing with coaches, playing for a losing Rams team, rise to stardom, prejudice against black players, drugs and the enforcement of rules by the league and officials during games. I’ll break down the highs and lows of his life to demonstrate how one can win and lose battles, but still be your own people. This book was written in 1996, but it is outstanding reading. Deacon was born in 1938, at a time when blacks had no rights. He first realized the extent of racism when a group of white teenagers in Florida, drove by and threw a watermelon, hitting an old black woman, who eventually died. Everyone tried to justify why not doing anything about it. The law had no intention of helping. This angered Deacon, since he realized blacks weren’t treated as equals. Anything done to a black person by a white was ok, while if it happened in reverse, a lynching was coming. He met Jackie Robinson in Orlando, Florida who told him to never let someone know they hurt you. The battle was won when they know you’re hurt and you can’t do anything about it. His life became more difficult when he went to college.

02/19/2001 - Updated 11:23 AM ET Deacon Jones sacks hypertension By W. Reed Moran, Spotlight Health With medical adviser Stephen A. Shoop, M.D. Former L.A. Rams' Hall of Famer Deacon Jones made a career out of being unstoppable. Often called "the most intimidating player in the history of defensive football," Jones still holds the record for sacks in a single season, and was named Defensive Lineman of the Century by Sports Illustrated . At 62, he continues to drive himself, working as an actor, radio host, author, businessman and creator of a motivational foundation for underprivileged children. But the "Secretary of Defense" has also developed a healthy respect for his opponents, especially one that has been waiting for a chance to blind-side him for the past 25 years. "During my exit physical from the NFL in 1975, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure," Jones recounts. "I was young, and I have to admit, the consequences just didn't resonate with me. What I learned is it's a killer no one can ignore, and no matter how tough you are, you got to learn to play by this killer's rules." Read more Stories

Synopsis
More than a simple story, Headslap brings to full view the NFL during the 1960s and 1970sa time of incredible upheaval and change in the United States. These were tough times for black players as they tried to play the game while confronting prejudice and misconceptions that kept young stars from shining, such as Deacon Jones. Photo insert. The author, John Klawitter JMPKLAW@aol.com , January 25, 1997
More than the opinions of one great player.
Over six years in the making, and carefully researched and documented by writer John Klawitter, Deacon's biography provides a wide range of facts and information. Klawitter spent his time gathering a wealth of ideas opinions and reactions from players, coaches, owners and League officials. It's the way Deacon Jones wanted it, "I talk about subjects which are pretty generally kept quiet: Segregation in the NFL. The League-wide acceptance of pain killers. Some owner's view of players as slaves and highly specialized animals. Fate, that is, the bounce of the ball, and how it can determine the fortunes of the football wars. Owner and coaches' greed and stupidity. I tell it like it is, and then everyone else gets a chance to open up and tell it like they remember it. They didn't all want to come clean, and those who did open up don't all agree with me, but you, the reader, get the benefit-you can hear all sides and make up your own mind."

http://www.thechapel-nc.org/News/Deacons_Desk/ddesk_0997.html
From the September, 1997 edition of The Doulos monthly newsletter by Pat Jones In a little more than two months we will be having our Annual Business Meeting. It is not too soon to be in prayer about many important areas for The Chapel such as: the budget, missions, youth, and church leaders. Hopefully you are praying for your church, especially during this time when important decisions will be made for the 1998 year and beyond. Unlike attending a football or baseball game, when you attend church there are no spectators. We are all players. Jesus did not say go to all corners of the world and watch. He tells us to be His faithful servants here until His return. We all have ways of serving our God. Let us each ask ourselves, is God calling me to help in Children's Ministries or a Home Group, to be a deacon, a trustee, or on the mission board? Please consider where, not if, Christ will use you at The Chapel. The greatest gift you can give your Lord is your service to Him.
