Notable Football Graduates
A Heisman Trophy winner, Super Bowl MVPs, Rose Bowl MVPs, All-Americans, bowl game champions, attorneys, doctors, professors, and CEOs are just some of the bywords that describe the Stanford football player. Since Stanford University began playing football in 1891, Cardinal football players have had the opportunity to experience the best in intercollegiate football while at the same time earning one of the most prestigious undergraduate degrees in the world. Seventeen Stanford football players have been drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft. Pro football greats Jim Plunkett, John Elway, James Lofton, John Brodie and Frankie Albert are just a few of Stanford's first round selections. Like Plunkett before him, Elway led his team to a pair of Super Bowl victories - 1998 and '99 - and earning MVP honors in the latter. Bob Mathias, whom many consider to be the greatest athlete of all time, became a U.S. Congressman from California following his playing days at Stanford. Mathias, of course, won the 1948 and '52 Olympic gold medal in the decathlon. He played football at Stanford in 1951 and '52 and was a four-year member of the track team.

SPORTS CARD COMPANIES DIVE INTO FANTASY MARKET
By Tom Kessenich and Greg Ambrosius

Looking for another example of how the fantasy sports industry is starting to carry some serious clout? Look no further than the way sports card companies have targeted this growing and influential audience as a potential means to expand their businesses. The latest sports card company to enter the fantasy fray is Upper Deck, which is co-marketing and providing prizes for CDM Fantasy Sports’ Upper Deck Internet Basketball. “It seems like a natural move to reach out to the fantasy sports audience,” said Mary Mancera, Upper Deck’s director of corporate communications. “You have a captured sport of ardent fans and there’s an audience there that is interacting and engaging. It’s really the kind of active sports fan we’ve always wanted to target for possible crossover in the collecting world.” Link to newsletter WHAT’S THE BUZZ?: EA PROVIDES PRIZES TO ISN WINNERS

Carson, Young denied Fame Marcus rushes into Hall By GARY MYERS
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Harry Carson Marcus Allen (l.) SAN DIEGO - George Young and Harry Carson came so close to making it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame yesterday, but in the end, were the only two candidates among the final seven who failed to pick up enough votes. It was a double snub for the Giants. And the disappointment stretched from Torrey Pines, where Carson was playing golf one foursome behind Lawrence Taylor in an NFL Alumni tournament just outside San Diego, to Baltimore, where Young's wife, Lovey, who was hoping her phone would ring with good news that her husband, who died almost 14 months ago, would receive pro football's highest honor in his first year on the ballot. "I'm happy for the consideration, recognize that it was the first time and hope he will considered again and remembered for what he stood for," Lovey Young said. "I thought about how George always told me you should view these things. Therefore, I am not devastated. His record stands for what he valued. The Hall of Fame is the ultimate memory in his field." Carson, a Giants middle linebacker from 1976-88, and Young, the Giants GM from 1979-97, made the cut yesterday from 14 modern era candidates down to 10 and then down to six. At that point, all that's required is 80% of the votes of the 38 committee members in the room. Eight negative votes eliminate a candidate.

Spring Football Game Cancelled
(Greensboro, NC) - 4/1/03 - Head coach George Small has announced that the 2003 spring football game, which was set for Wednesday, April 16, 2003, has been cancelled. Spring Practice Underway (Greensboro, NC) Head coach George Small will trot to the Aggie Stadium field for the first time since he left Aggieland practice field nearly a quarter century ago as a senior. Small will face the task of rebuilding a team which finished 4-8 a year ago, the school's worst record since a 4-7 finish in 1995. Small feels that he will have a slight advantage coming in, since he has been acclimated with the team since mid-January. He has already established a new era of leadership, where the players feel that they will be challenged on and off the field. Community service participation has increased, particularly with the student/peer tutorial programs, where players tutor area grade school students. Also, on campus, Small has instituted a "professional day," in which all team members must attend class in professional attire, a symbol of how they should approach each day and each game. "We are about business, the business of winning a championship," Small said. "This is the start of what we are trying to do with this team, and that is win, with pride, and with honor."
