SAN DIEGO >> Being selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame is very much like making it to the Super Bowl. Some players make it in their first season. Others wait decades. Some never make it at all. Yesterday morning, it took the 39-member selection committee nearly five hours to make its choices. From the original list of some 70 candidates, 15 finalists remained for the first round of voting at 7 a.m. By noon, just five got the call they had been waiting for. Marcus Allen, Elvin Bethea, Joe DeLamielleure, James Lofton and Hank Stram can now book their trips to Honolulu. The five members of the Class of 2003 will be officially introduced during festivities at next Sunday's Pro Bowl. It was especially sweet for Allen, who grew up in San Diego, site of today's Super Bowl. The former standout at Southern California, Heisman Trophy winner, NFL Rookie of the Year and Super Bowl XVIII MVP was chosen in his first year of eligibility. "Today is a great day," said Allen, the first player in NFL history to rush for over 10,000 yards and catch passes for 5,000 yards. "It's the greatest day in my athletic career. It's a dream come true to have this happen in my home town and so great for my parents, the first people who bought me football shoes and paid the initiation fee for Pop Warner football.

(CBS) Marcus Allen was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, a day before the team he left during a bitter feud returns to the Super Bowl.
The former Oakland Raiders running back was chosen for the Class of 2003 in his first year of eligibility. He will be joined by Elvin Bethea, Joe DeLamielleure, James Lofton and Hank Stram, who went in as a seniors candidate.
Allen was the first player in NFL history to rush for more than 10,000 yards and catch passes for 5,000 more. He finished his career with 12,243 yards rushing and 5,411 receiving. He scored 145 touchdowns and was regarded as one of the game's best goal-line and short yardage runners.
Most of that production came with the Raiders. He led Oakland to the 1984 Super Bowl title, the team's last, and was voted the game's MVP for his 191 yards and two touchdowns.

James Lofton to coach Chargers' receivers
SIGNONSANDIEGO February 20, 2002 The Chargers added one of the most prolific pass catchers in NFL history to their coaching staff today when head coach Marty Schottenheimer named James Lofton as the team's wide receivers coach. Lofton is joining the Chargers after spending the past eight years in broadcasting. This is Lofton's first coaching assignment. During a 16-season NFL career (1978-93), Lofton played in 233 games and caught 764 passes for 14,004 yards (18.3 avg.) and 75 touchdowns. His 764 career receptions rank 10th in league history, while his 14,004 receiving yards rank second in league annals to Jerry Rice (20,386). Lofton, 45, originally entered the NFL in 1978 as a first-round draft pick (sixth overall) of the Green Bay Packers. He spent his first nine seasons (1978-86) in Green Bay before moving to Los Angeles to play for the Raiders during the 1987-88 seasons. In 1989, he signed with Buffalo, where he spent the next four seasons (1989-92). During Lofton's time with the Bills, he was part of three AFC Championship teams and played in three Super Bowls following the 1990, '91 and '92 seasons.

Written by Debbie Fetterman New-age Lofton could be attention grabber on track As with vintage wines, aging is a good thing in the world of masters' running. James Lofton of Plano, the famed NFL receiver- turned-football analyst, celebrated his 45th birthday Thursday. He will now be trying to break a new set of records. Lofton, second to Jerry Rice on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list, has an opportunity to set national and world age-group track records for 45- to 49-year-olds. "As I move up in age, the marks are a little more accessible," Lofton said. "It's funny to think, at 40, you're just starting to wet your feet. With this, getting older is better, but it only happens every five years." Lofton will be among more than 150 participants at Saturday's Texas Masters Championships at Jesuit High School. He will compete in the 200- and 400-meter runs at 7:30 and 9 p.m., respectively. The meet record in the 400 for Lofton's age group is 51.2 seconds, set by Roy Turner in 1987. The national record is 50.2, set by Fred Sowerby in 1994. The recently ratified world record is 49.8.
