November 28th, 1999 was proclaimed Jim Marshall Day by the Minnesota Vikings Organization and Govenor Jesse Ventura. Jim Marshall wore #70 for the Minnesota Vikings and that number is now retired and up on the Wall of Fame. I was at the ceremony and I took 70 photos as a tribute to Jim and all of his great accomplishments. I hope you will take some time to view these photos and celebrate this day with Jim and the 66,000+ fans who attended the game that day. Click Here to see Jim Marshall Day!

Top 40 College Football Countdown (Updated 8/9) Top 40 College Football Countdown Continues
This week, we continue the College FootballTop 40 countdown with #20 to #11.
#20 Marshall: Marshall? Sure, never underestimate some of the smaller conferences, especially one that has QB Byron Leftwich. The 6'-5" senior has 59 TDs and 16 INTs the last two years and could be the #1 pick in the NFL draft. Leftwich led Marshall to an 11-2 season in 2001 with 37 TDs and only 7 INTs. Marshall averaged 37.3 ppg (64 in a bowl game win) and could bust out like Fresno State and David Carr did last fall.
#19 Maryland: How important is innovative coaching in football? Coach Ralph Friedgen went 10-2 in his first season with Maryland, leading the Terps to a surprising ACC title. Note that Maryland averaged 34 points and over 200 yards rushing and passing per game. With 8 starters back on offense and 5 on 'D', Friedgen's imaginative offensive mind may show that 2001 was not a fluke.
#18 USC: The Trojans should have been better under first-year head coach Pete Carroll and respected offensive coordinator Norm Chow. USC went 6-6, losing twice as a favorite, but could make a big jump this fall. 6'-5" senior QB Carson Palmer (13 TDs, 12 INTs) heads a veteran backfield alongside speedy senior RB Sultan McCullough.
Palmer has solid receiving targets in WRs Kareem Kelly and Keary Colbert. Carroll's specialty has always been defense and USC held teams to 17 points per game in the pass-happy Pac-10 (after allowing 28 ppg under Paul Hackett in 2000). If Chow can get the offense to click, this veteran group could be tough.

NFL Press release about Jim Marshall Day Marshall's number to be retired on Nov. 28 NEW YORK, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 1999) — This Sunday, Nov. 28, the Minnesota Vikings will honor one of the greatest players in their history — and the author of a record that may never be broken — Jim Marshall. Marshall is the league's all-time leader in consecutive games played with 282 from 1960-79. He played for the Cleveland Browns in 1960 and with Minnesota from 1961-79. December 16 will mark the 20th anniversary of Marshall's final game. Sunday's festivities will include a pregame ceremony, speeches by Marshall's former teammates and coaches, and the retirement of Marshall's uniform No. 70. When Marshall took the field as a rookie for Cleveland on Sept. 25, 1960, it was the first in his streak of 282 consecutive games played. In his 20 seasons, Jim Marshall never missed a game. Marshall was traded to the expansion Minnesota Vikings in 1961. He played in every game in Vikings history through 1979, including 20 playoff games. He also competed in two Pro Bowls for a career total of 304 consecutive games. His streak ended almost 20 years ago at New England's Foxboro Stadium on Dec. 16, 1979. "He had great enthusiasm," says Marshall's former head coach Bud Grant. "Nobody enjoyed playing football more than Jim Marshall. He enjoyed practice. He enjoyed the locker room. He enjoyed being a football player."

A BRIEF HISTORY T he Marshall University "M" Club, made up of former Thundering Herd athletes, team managers, student trainers and cheerleaders who participated in varsity or junior varsity athletics at MU, is almost as old of an idea as athletic competition for the old Green and White. While the first documented athletic contests took place in baseball and in football in 1898, the letter "M" award began being handed out by the then year-old Marshall Athletic Association in 1905. While thousands of participants have earned letter awards throughout the years, there was very little organization in or out of the athletic department to keep track of who, when or where letter awards were given . There was even less of a feeling of actually belonging to something connected with Marshall University for former participants in athletics at MU. No one had tried to put together any sort of list of these people in nearly a half-century until the MU Athletic Hall of Fame was being formed in 1984. The task of trying to organize and contact all the living participants got energized when Bobby Pruett returned as the Head Coach of the Thundering Herd Football program in January of 1996. As a former three-sport letter winner for the Herd, Pruett thought an organization committed to bringing these people back into the fold was necessary to continue building a successful athletic program in all areas, not just football. Honoring those who had paved the way for current Marshall athletes, building a fan, financial and recruiting base and giving those ex-players, managers, trainers and cheerleaders a place to get together for Herd games was the basis for a new club in Huntington.

WMUL to air program commemorating Marshall football teams of the 1990s
    by LARA K. STREIT
reporter Marshall's campus radio station, WMUL-FM 88.1, will host a two-part program called "Playing for Championships" to commemorate the Thundering Herd football teams of the 1990s. Part I airs tonight following the Southeast Missouri State game. This part will review the Herd when they were a Division I-AA team. Part II will air at 7 p.m. Friday and will highlight Marshall's first three years as a Division I-A team. The program features interviews with former Herd players, such as Chad Pennington and Larry McCloud, and coaches, including coach Bob Pruett's predecessor Jim Donnan. The program was written and produced by Todd McCormick, Burke, Va., graduate student. "I don't know of anyone producing a radio program to celebrate the 'Team of the '90s," McCormick said. "The project was a labor of love for me. I wanted to do this because Marshall had phenomenal seasons of athletic excellence while I was a student." Dr. Charles G. Bailey, faculty manager for WMUL, says the program serves two purposes. "The program celebrates Mar-shall's decade of dominance and it also shows off WMUL's excellence for covering Marshall games."

    Head Coach
Jim Grobe, who orchestrated one of the greatest turnarounds in Wake Forest football history while laying the foundation for future Demon Deacon gridiron success, begins his second season as head coach. Grobe owns a 6-5 record in one season at Wake Forest, 39-38-1 in seven seasons overall as a head coach. Grobe inherited a young team that went 2-9 in 2000 and guided it to a 6-5 record last fall. The Deacons won road games at East Carolina, Duke, Virginia and North Carolina en route to posting Wake¡¦s second winning season since 1992. The win over Virginia, Grobe¡¦s alma mater, was Wake¡¦s first over the Cavaliers since 1983. The 32-31 win at North Carolina came after the Deacons trailed the Tar Heels 24-0 at halftime. A win over Northern Illinois in the season finale secured the winning season and made Wake Forest eligible for a bowl berth. Grobe became just the eighth rookie head coach to produce a winning season in his first year. All five losses came to bowl-bound teams. And in three of those losses vs. Maryland, NC State and Clemson Wake Forest had the ball with good field position and with a chance to go ahead or even the score late in the game.

Strange but true: Signs point to '85 again
You have to go back 18 years to find the last time a Bears youth movement paid as many dividends as last season's. The 1984 Bears featured rookies and second- and third-year players such as Wilber Marshall, Jim Covert, Willie Gault, Mike Richardson, Dave Duerson, Richard Dent, Jim McMahon and Dennis Gentry. The coach was a third-year guy named Mike Ditka. A blossoming defense announced itself with a 27-0 shutout of Denver in Week 2. The offense was built around a pounding running back. Everything came together to produce the franchise's first NFC Central title and a berth in the NFC championship game. The team returned the next season to É well, you know the rest. Can the Bears repeat history this season? They never will be as entertaining or dominant as the '85 team, but they firmly believe they can take a similar step up in what has become a watered-down league. Those players and others are a year older and better and say they are ready to blossom in the same manner as the '85 Bears.
