Oaks' First Baseman Jim Marshall was born in Illinois, but grew up in Southern California. He attended Compton High School in Los Angeles and Compton Community College, where he played baseball, football, and basketball. He later attended Long Beach State College. Big Jim, at 6' 1", 195 pounds, first appeared for the Oaks in 1950, when he came up from the Albuquerque team to appear in four games. He started the 1951 season in Oakland, hitting .255 with 9 home runs, but finished the season in Wenatchee. He spent most of the 1952 season in Nashville, where he hit .296 with 24 home runs and 98 rbi's. In 1953, Jim returned to Oakland, where he batted .273 and finished second to Bill Howerton with 24 home runs and 99 rbi's for the Acorns. Jim would have probably accumulated more but for a pulled thigh muscle which took him out of play for a month. Jim's best year was 1954. After getting off to a slow start, he batted .285 and lead the Pacific Coast League in both home runs (with 31) and rbi's (with 123). The Oaks ended up in the Governor's Cup playoffs against the Seals that season. Jim managed to hit a home run in each of the first two playoff games, and drove in pitcher Don Farraresse with a third-inning single that clinched the third game for the Acorns. Thanks in part to Jim's efforts, the Acorns took home the Cup. Jim Marshall will go on to play for five major league teams, and manage the Chicago Cubs in 1974- 1976 and the Oakland A's in 1977.

Their passes fairly snapped across the turf, and the Motherwell players were often struggling to turn and chase as Killie worked tight triangles through the Lanarkshire side's defence. Only 7 minutes in, a cross from McLaren was only just too far ahead of Dargo, and a couple of minutes later, a Boyd cross was beautifully dummied by Mahood to create an opening for Dargo and Di Giacomo, but they were just to late in reading it. McLaren then just failed to chip Dubourdeau in the Motherwell goal, and a cross from the same player was just too high for Boyd at the back post. Half way through the first half, Innes got a soft booking for an innocuous looking tackle, and this was to play a big part in the game later. Motherwell had their first shot on target after half an hour; a good drive from McFadden, which Marshall did well to hang on to. This gave Motherwell a lift, and during a spell of Motherwell pressure, Shields pulled down Clarkson, and John Underhill immediately pointed to the spot. McFadden sent Marshall the wrong way, and with 10 minutes to go to half time, Motherwell were ahead. Before the break, McFadden was booked for an off the ball tussle with Innes, and right on the break, Dillon also picked up a yellow card.

After passing a late pitch inspection, Dundee's finest desert was finally given the all clear and Killie cruised to a 2-0 victory courtesy of goals from Craig Dargo, his first in three months, and outstanding captain Kevin McGowne. Dundee United are now embarrassingly sixteen games without a win against the Ayrshire club. From the offset Bobby Williamson's tactics were clear; Attack Attack Attack. Kris Boyd and Craig Dargo were both given the nod to start alongside Tommy Johnson in a fearsome three-pronged attack, with Andy McLaren finding a place on the bench and Stevie Murray dropping out due to injury. Distinguished captain Freddie Dindeleux was another noticeable absentee after picking up hamstring injury midweek, as was influential midfielder Alan Mahood. Sean Hessey and Jesus Sanjuan, respectively, took their places in the starting eleven. United manager Alex Smith handed former Kilmarnock players Jim Lauchlan, celebrating his 25th birthday today, and Jim McIntyre starts as the Tannadice club aimed to end the seven game run without scoring against Ayrshire's finest.

Athletes shone brightly in 2002
By Ashley Brown

Columnist Many Columbia County teams and athletes made 2002 a year to remember. The Augusta Christian boys' basketball team continued to excel in the Georgia Independent Schools Association, despite a coaching change. The Harlem Bulldogs also emerged on the court. Harlem is known more for its excellent baseball program, but the school's basketball team took a step up by making it to the state playoffs in 2002. Also, two of the top young basketball players ever to suit up in Columbia County blossomed before our eyes. So when I look back at the past year, there are plenty of great moments to relive. Here are my best memories of 2002. Key to success: Lakeside's football team had a year to forget, but the Panthers had a few bright spots, and one of those was when Kyle Key hit the gridiron. Key wasn't supposed to be suiting up for Lakeside. He'd had heart surgery to replace a defective valve, and the prospect of him being hit by big football players didn't appeal to his doctors. You can imagine the delight of Lakeside fans to see Key not only step on the field, but to boot the first kick of his career.

The Youngstown State football team renews one of its biggest rivalries when it travels to Huntington, W. Va., on Saturday to play Marshall. Kickoff for the game at Marshall University Stadium, which will be broadcasted back to Youngstown on TV-21 WFMJ, is at 7 p.m.
The Penguins (8-2 overall) are ranked sixth in the latest Division I-AA polls and will have their work cut out for them facing Marshall (9-1), the 20th-ranked team in Division I-A. The Thundering Herd has won nine consecutive contests since losing the season opener at then-No. 1 Florida. The contest is believed to be YSU’s first-ever against a ranked Division I-A team.
Youngstown State is coming off an impressive performance beating Elon 45-7 on Saturday. The Penguins had one of their best total offensive days in school history amassing 609 yards. That total ranks third in school history for yardage in a single game. The 45 points were a season high and marked the eighth time in 10 games that YSU had scored more than 31 points in a game this year.

Jim Tressel Leaves Legacy ( 135-57-2 at YSU)
Former Youngstown State head football coach and Director of Athletics Jim Tressel left a major mark not only on the Athletic Department and YSU campus, but on the entire Mahoning Valley community.
Tressel spent 15 years as the head coach at Youngstown State and six as the Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics before being named the head football coach at The Ohio State University in January 2001. Now after two years, the entire state has taken pride in his accomplishments leading the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 14-0 record and a National Championship in 2002.
Tressel brought a winning attitude to the Mahoning Valley when he took charge of the Penguin football program in the mid-1980’s. He gave the people something to rally around in a time of need and helped keep the spirits of everyone in the community high.
He came to Youngstown in 1986 and within two seasons the Penguins were in the NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs. The playoffs, once a dream, became common place for YSU. In his tenure, Youngstown State appeared in the playoffs 10 times and won four national championships.
The first national title came in 1991 and began a run of four straight title-game appearances. The march to the crown in 1991 was magical as the Penguins won eight straight to end the season after a 4-3 start. YSU won at Georgia Southern on Nov. 2 and was never to lose again that season. In the playoffs, the Penguins beat Villanova and Nevada-Reno in the final seconds and defeated Samford and Marshall.

Back to Home ... Colleges Sunday, Apr 13, 2003 Kansas State University Posted on Tue, Feb. 04, 2003 FOOTBALL Kansas State's 2003 schedule is not complete. A published report had K-State and Marshall close to a deal to play Sept. 19 in Huntington, W.Va., a Friday night game to air on ESPN. The Thundering Herd would make two trips to Manhattan in return. "We haven't talked to Marshall in a couple of years," K-State senior associate athletic director Jim Epps said Monday. Epps said the Wildcats are still trying to fill a slot for Sept. 20. They are hoping for a home-and-home series with an unnamed opponent, an agreement that "could be done by mid-week," Epps said. If that falls through, K-State will look at a single-game deal with another team. K-State has non-conference games scheduled against Troy State on Aug. 30, Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 6 and Massachusetts on Sept. 13. The Cats begin the conference schedule Oct. 4 at Texas. Bryan Baldwin, a wide receiver from St. Louis Cardinal Ritter, said he will sign Wednesday with Kansas State. Baldwin, 6-foot, 172 pounds, is one of Missouri's top high school sprinters. He chose the Wildcats over Iowa, Northern Illinois and Kansas. "Everybody offered about the same things, but the people I talked to trusted K-State's coaches the most," Baldwin said Monday. According to Rivals100.com, that brings K-State's commitment list up to 11 players, including two junior college transfers who signed in December.
