The feature article entitled "Behind the Namath Affair" charts the football quarterback's career and retirement announcement, after being forced to quit by commissioner Pete Rozelle for his alleged mafia ties at his privately owned nightclub in Manhattan. "In spite of his reputation as a flashy passer, Namath had run his team like a seasoned professional - and he'd made good on his bold guarantee." -Bob Costas There always seemed to be something magical about Joe Namath, a rebel at a time when the country appreciated one. He was cocky, but in a likable way. The image of the swinging bachelor as much as his rocket-like arm helped make him the most glorified football player of his time. He was "Broadway Joe", the guy who guaranteed a Super Bowl victory for a three-touchdown underdog New York Jets team and then delivered. He was a charismatic presence who became a larger-than-life figure. At 21, he was a star. At 25, he was a legend. His road roommate said it was like traveling with a Beatle. "The late `60s and the early `70s were times of compelling social and political upheaval," wrote Tony Kornheiser in Inside Sports, "and Namath, with his antiestablishment shaggy hair, mustache, white shoes and Life-Is-a-Bacchanal philosophy, became a symbol of inevitable, triumphant change. The antihero." If there ever was a right athlete at the right time, it was Namath. "If he did it all again now, Joe would not rise to the same heights," said former teammate John Dockery in the early eighties. "The antihero is passe; Joe came at the time he was destined to come."

More Articles Home Celebrating "Broadway Joe" Namath - Part I by Harvey Frommer Way back in 1964 the St. Louis Cardinals of the National Football League and the New York Jets of the American Football League engaged in a bidding war over Alabama quarterback Joe Namath. It symbolized the war between the two leagues for star players with ability, who would also be television attractions. At Beaver Falls High School in Pennsylvania, the 6-2, 200 pound Namath had excelled in baseball, basketball and football. He quarterbacked his high school team to a perfect season and the Western Pennsylvania championship. He dazzled the opposition on the baseball field as an outfielder and pitcher, but turned down a $20,000 bonus offered by the Baltimore Orioles of the American League claiming he wanted to concentrate on football. At the University of Alabama, Namath was "all everything." His legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant said of him: "He is the greatest athlete I have ever coached." Joe Willie guided the "Crimson Tide" to Orange Bowl appearances in 1963 and 1964. The following season, as an All-American, he led 'Bama to a perfect Season, the SEC title, and the national championship even though his team was defeated by the University of Texas in the Orange Bowl. In his collegiate career at Alabama, Namath was instrumental in getting his teams to post a 28-3-0 record .

More Articles Home Celebrating "Broadway Joe" Namath - Part II by Harvey Frommer The match-up for Super Bowl III was out of Hollywood central casting. Joe Namath and the 18-point underdog New York Jets of the nine-year-old American Football League versus the Baltimore Colts of the established National Football League. Three days before the big event took place the man they called "Broadway Joe" stood up at an awards banquet in Miami Springs, Florida and said, "We're going to win this game. I guarantee it. I guarantee we will beat the Colts." His statement was looked upon as bold and over the edge by many in the media, and many more in established football circles. But the guy from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania was ready to put his performance where his mouth was. On January 12, 1969 - 31 years ago today - the Colts and Jets lined up at the Orange Bowl in Miami. What had been interpreted as Namath's outrageous comments had placed Super Bowl III center-stage. In attendance for the event were many celebrities including President Richard Nixon, Vice President Spiro Agnew, astronaut Jim Lovell and comedian Jackie Gleason. New York's confidence grew as the game moved along.

After college, Namath signed a professional contract with the New York Jets for what was then a record amount of money. In his first season, 1965, Namath was named the American Football League's (AFL) Rookie of the Year. In 1967 Namath who led the AFL in passing yardage became the first professional quarterback in history to pass for more than 4,000 yards in a single season. He was named the AFL's Most Valuable Player in 1968. Namath is perhaps best known for publicly guaranteeing the New York Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts in the 1969 Super Bowl. Going into the game, the Jets were 19 1/2-point underdogs. The Jets beat the Colts 16-7 to stun the sports world. Not only was Namath selected Most Valuable Player, but this game was considered instrumental in forging the eventual merger of the AFL and the National Football League.

Although joe namath is best remembered for his sterling performance in the New York quarterbacksclearly establishes his place in professional football history
    http://www.fortunecity.com/olympia/madden/575/pages/mvps/namath.html
    Joe Namath
Position: Quarterback Height: Weight: 200 lbs. Birthdate: May 31, 1943 Birthplace: Beaver Falls, PA College: Alabama Team/Year: New York Jets; 1965-1976
L.A. Rams; 1977 MVP: Super Bowl III Other: Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. Although Joe Namath is best remembered for his sterling performance in the New York Jets' stunning 16-7 upset of the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, his 13-year tenure from 1965-1977 as one of the game's most exciting, proficient, and publicized quarterbacks clearly establishes his place in professional football history. This was assured with his first pro football act, the signing of a $400,000 contract early in 1965 that gave the AFL its biggest victory in the costly interleague war of the 1960s. After that, his image as a swinging New York bachelor as much as his golden arm helped make him perhaps the most famous football player of his time. In 1967, "Broadway Joe" became the first quarterback to pass for more than 4,000 yards in one season. In 1968, he was named AFL player of the year and a unanimous all-pro. He also was selected the most valuable player of Super Bowl III. Namath's pregame "guarantee" of victory, backed up by his 206 yards passing, was a major factor in assuring the competitive viability of the Super Bowl. Namath excelled at Alabama, where he was hailed by veteran Crimson Tide coach Paul (Bear) Bryant as "the greatest athlete I have ever coached." But he was plagued with knee injuries through much of his pro career. Still, his career passing totals are impressive. In the 1968 AFL Championship Game, he threw 3 touchdown passes to lead New York to a 27-23 win ove the Oakland Raiders that put the Jets in Super Bowl III. He was named to the All-Time AFL Team in 1969.
