About Walter Payton Walter Payton was born on July 25, 1954, in Columbia, Mississippi. He was a first-round pick from Jackson State in the 1975 draft. He was quickly recognized as a super star. He was both NFL Most Valuable Player and NFL Player of the Year in the years 1977 and 1985. He became both the all-time leader in rushing and combined net yards. He was an All-Pro seven times. He played in nine Pro Bowls and has been inducted into both the NFL Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. In spite of always being the primary focus of hard hitting defensive teams, Walter rarely became injured. In fact, Walter's career included a streak of 186 consecutive games during his 13 years of Professional play. Walter's unique style and agility on the football field will always be fondly remembered by all Bear fans who ever saw him play. The Walter Payton Cancer Fund provides a meaningful opportunity to overcome the one obstacle that eluded him. Please join Walter's wife, Connie, and their two children, Jarrett and Brittney, in the fight to find a cure! The Walter Payton Cancer Fund has been established by the Payton family to honor Walter’s life. The Fund sponsors groundbreaking cancer research and the kinds of creative treatment options that so dramatically improved the quality of Walter’s life during his final months. The Walter Payton Cancer Fund has been created under the auspices of the Cancer Treatment Research Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. They join in their mission to provide cancer patients and their families dignity, healing and genuine hope for a cure by sponsoring the world’s most innovative and promising clinical research on science-based treatment options. Payton set the standard for durability and productivity as a running back—nobody ever ran with a football more times for more yards. He set the NFL's all-time record for total yards gained (21,803), rushing yards (16,726) and rushing attempts (3,838) along with many other records while missing only one game over a fabulous 13 year career (1975-87). His 10 seasons with 1,000 or more yards, his 275 yards in one game, and his 77 games with more than 100 yards rushing also are records that are yet to be broken.

Walter Payton
The Best Ever!
Take a look back at the Hall of Fame career of Walter Payton. PAYTON Tells How He Wants To Be Remembered In Autobiography, `Never Die Easy' The world remembers the late Payton as one of the greatest players in the history of professional football. But Walter said he wants to remembered for more than just his incredible accomplishments on the football field. In the recently published, Never Die Easy: The Autobiography of Walter Payton (Villard Books, $24.95), which he was working on at the time of his death last year, Walter Payton tells readers how he wants to be remembered. "If you ask me how I want to be remembered, it is as a winner," Walter Payton says in the book, written with veteran journalist and author Don Yaeger. "Is a winner somebody who has success and basically accomplished something or wins a game or whatever? That's not a winner. You know what a winner is? A winner is somebody who has given his best effort, who has tried the hardest they possibly can, who has utilized every ounce of energy and strength within them to accomplish something. It doesn't mean they accomplished it or failed, it means that they've given it their best." Payton continues, "I want to be remembered as a person who, whenever he played the game of football, he left everything he had out there on the football field, did everything he possibly could for the team to win, not for himself. For the team to win."

The lesson wasn't "get up after being knocked down." Anyone, even those who have little courage, can do that. No, it was this jump up after being knocked down, and do it with a smile on your face. Then bounce away from the pile like you just won the lottery.

    Walter Payton slideshow
Sweetness was an illusion nurtured by Chicago Bears fans who watched Walter Payton perform for 13 NFL seasons. Blurred by the 16,726 yards he piled up as the most prolific runner in football history were the thousands of bruises, headaches and battered egos he left on his record-setting trail of tears. There was nothing sweet about Paytons running style, which reflected hard work, hustle, enthusiasm and total effort. Every Payton run started with the trademark first-step burst that carried him into the hole, where he could accelerate to daylight or explode into a tackler with aggressive, punishing force. Every Payton run ended with the 5-10, 200-pounder grinding, scrapping, fighting, battling for one more yard. No one in history ran harder, play after play, and nobody did more with modest speed than the blue-collar star former Bears coach Mike Ditka called "the most complete football player I ever saw." Superbly conditioned, Payton also was an outstanding receiver and a threat to break open a game with the halfback pass, which he threw eight times for touchdowns. Need a block? Payton could deliver with the fierce drive of a fullback, a role he relished even more than his ball-carrying exploits. His powerful legs and sledgehammer arms were feared weapons, as was the delight he took in clearing a hole or protecting his quarterback.

By Jim Campbell and Bob Carroll
    Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999
Pro Football Weekly historians Jim Campbell and Bob Carroll took time Tuesday to give their thoughts on the career of the great Walter Payton. Jim Campbell says: "To me he was a throwback. He was what I remember pro football running backs being like when I was growing up, as far as the complete package. He could obviously run, but he could also pass, he could catch, he could block and he could probably play defense if he needed to. ... "I remember reading about him being touted as a Heisman candidate before his senior year in college. Almost anybody can be a Heisman candidate, but I thought for somebody coming from Jackson State to be mentioned with the Heisman, this guy has to be something special. And of course when he got to the NFL, he was more than something special. ... "His heart and desire are what separated him from the rest of the pack. He did not have the greatest natural ability, but his will to win was always there. ... "No one can ever question the heart, because there are too many film clips where he appears to be tackled and ends up getting 40 more yards. ...

Besides his eight NFL records and numerous other accomplishments on the football field, Payton will remembered for playing the game with the enthusiasm of a youngster and the blue-collar work ethic characterized by the city where he plied his trade. In tribute to the Hall of Fame running back, the Pro Football Weekly Internet Edition presents a sampling of stories, historical perspectives and statistics that attempt to recap the essence of his life.

But for Walter Payton his unsurpassed talent on the gridiron was only to set the groundwork for his true purpose in life. If you only know of Walter Payton the football player, then you must read this book to learn the real reason Walter Payton was known as Sweetness. The style in which this book was written may not be as sophisticated as some readers may require. But the simplicity of the format lends it to being read by adults and children a- like. Walter can therefore continue to reach the children, just as he did before his untimely passing. A touch of sweetness I was a bit caught off guard when I first picked up Never Die Easy, and saw it was comprised of narritives from various people in Walter Payton's life. I quickly put any aprehensions aside as I became enthralled in the descriptions and recollectons of Payton and others. I was gratified to find that the Walter Payton of real life was close to the Walter Payton I had come to admire and respect. Many people contributed to this book, and added layers to the story Walter Payton told. Along with the voices of coaches and fellow players, the voices of his wife, his children, and his siblings. The passages that deal with his life before Chicago...a Soul Train dance contest winner?... and after football are candid. They are very frank with descriptions of learning he was sick and how they dealt with the struggle as his health declined. No one ever gave up hope. This is a fitting tribute to one of the finest football players to ever play the game and a pleasure to read.
