More About Barry
Barry Sanders was born July 16th, 1968 in Wichita, Kansas. He grew up in a family being one of eleven other children. When Barry was a kid he was considered to be too short to play football well at the college level. In fact, his 1,417 yards rushing in his senior year of high school wasn't enough to impress college recruiters. One recruiter told Barry's coach, "We don't need another midget." Only two colleges offered Barry a football scholarship. Barry accepted a scholarship from Oklahoma State University and the rest is now history.

Barry Sanders is a philosophical man. But he does not sit there, as he is doing now, with his hands rolled up in the bottom of his gray sweatshirt, and contemplate the meaning of this and that and wonder why so many people are noticing the same things about him these days. All this talk about change. Yeah, he has heard it. He takes his girlfriend to the Masonic Temple to see "Phantom of the Opera," and the whole locker room knows. He shows up at All Jokes Aside, a downtown comedy club, and half the audience can't believe that it's Barry Sanders, laughing hysterically at the comedian who's laughing at him and chiding, "Hey, man, what's with that bro' with the Afro? Sure is nappy!"

The beginning for Barry Sanders came quietly on Thursday. The beginning of his football afterlife. Barry Sanders gave fans and teammates plenty to cheer about in 1988. (AP) The National Football Foundation announced Thursday that Sanders is up for the College Football Hall of Fame. Someone, somewhere had figured out that Sanders' NFL career was finally over. This year is the first his name has been submitted for the ballot despite being immediately eligible when he retired from the Detroit Lions on July 28, 1999. Three-and-a-half years after he retired, four years after he touched a football in competition, Sanders' immortality has begun. He will be a slam-dunk choice for the class of 2003 before he will certainly enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004. "I can't imagine it wouldn't be automatic," said

MITCH ALBOM: Read all about it: Barry is still retired
February 26, 2003 BY MITCH ALBOM FREE PRESS COLUMNIST There used to be this "Saturday Night Live" routine in which Chevy Chase, as the Weekend Update newscaster, reported on the death of Spain's dictator, Francisco Franco. Every week, Chevy would say, "This just in: Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead!" It's starting to get that way with Barry Sanders, isn't it? Every few months, we get a new report, a man on the microphone, a newspaper account, an eyewitness. The message is always the same: "This just in. Barry Sanders is still retired." This just in: Water is still wet. This just in: The sun is still hot. This just in: Jerry Springer is still idiotic. If I ever retire, I only hope people will be this disbelieving. I fear that immediately after my farewell party, someone will take my desk, and if I happen to forget something and come back 30 minutes later, that person already will have pictures of his wife and kids out and he'll say, "I'm sorry, do you have an appointment?" With Barry, it's different. It has been four years since he quit. No one wants to believe it. A recent Sports Illustrated story followed Barry to Chicago to try to get an answer. Speculation arose on ESPN this week. Even Matt Millen, the Lions' president who now has a new coach, admitted to calling Barry recently, just to test the waters.

http://www.collegefootballnews.com/Top_100_Players/Top_100_Players_16_Barry_Sand
100 Greatest Players of All-Time
#16 Barry Sanders Barry Sanders, Oklahoma State
Running Back, 1986-1988 The premium on our countdown was placed on those with outstanding college football careers which means a player usually had to be a star for at least two years. We decided not to give too much credit on our countdown to players who had one really amazing year (Michael Vick), those who were known for putting up monster numbers (Andre Ware, David Klingler, Troy Davis, LeShon Johnson) or those who were obviously out-of-this world talents, but not quite college football legends (Marshall Faulk). We made an exception for Barry Sanders. We're making the argument that Sanders' 1988 season ranks along side Babe Ruth's 60 home run season in 1927, Wayne Gretzky's 92 goal season of 1981-1982 (and maybe his 215 point year in 1985-1986) and Jerry Rice's 1987 season when he caught 22 touchdowns in 12 games as the most dominating seasons in the history of sports. If you dispute this, you didn't Sanders play in 1988. Sanders wasn't blazing fast in a sprinter's sense, but his quickness was jaw-dropping using his short stature to go unnoticed as he skipped in and out of tacklers. At 200 pounds, he was strong enough to break anyone who tried to arm tackle him and even though he was only 5'8" tall, he had two of the most powerful legs in the history of college football.

96. Fantasy Football Index - Viva Murillo 102902
Now, I'll admit that I might be biased. I happen to believe that barry Sandersis the greatest running back ever to play professional football.
http://www.fantasyindex.com/Murillo102902.html
Fantasy Index: News and Commentary Viva Murillo! Rushing Record
Michael Murillo
Fantasy Index columnist The record belongs to Emmitt. In a process that seemed to take longer than contract negotiations for a Minnesota Vikings draft pick, Emmitt Smith surpassed Walter Payton as the NFL's all-time leading rusher. Smith has three Super Bowl rings, a spot in Canton whenever he becomes eligible and the most impressive record a running back can achieve. Oh, he also has the football from just about every touchdown he ever scored in the NFL. He's given away a few, but has kept almost all of them. Can you imagine the auction for that collection several years down the road? It would make the league's retirement plan look like spare change. Let Terrell Owens toss his touchdowns to his buddies. Emmitt Smith is building wealth in trunks full of pigskin. But this column isn't about Terrell Owens. As a matter of fact, it isn't really about Emmitt Smith. Nobody doubts the impact of his career in professional football history. You'll have plenty to read regarding the meaning behind Smith's accomplishment. Praise will gush from infinite sources and television screens will fill with highlights from his career. Players, coaches and fans will give their input. And somewhere, Jerry Jones will plan on the easiest method to push another Dallas legend out the door. And don't doubt that's exactly what Jones is thinking right now. Do you think Emmitt Smith will get treated any better than Tom Landry? Smith will make his own decisions, and as long as he makes the decisions Jerry Jones likes, everything will be fine. But Jones writes the checks, and he's not going to fund a long, expensive farewell for the most prolific runner in league history. If Smith won't quit football, he may quit the confines of Texas Stadium. Stranger things have happened.
