Deion seeks bright lights, like a moth
December 25, 2002 Deion Sanders has been stopped, and yet he has succeeded. The Chargers have blocked the itinerant cornerback from making a cameo comeback with the Oakland Raiders, but doing so only serves Sanders' larger purpose: publicity. Sanders is two years between tackles, about as Prime Time as Sermonette, but his talent for drawing attention to himself is undiminished. Sunday, Sanders used his CBS forum to disclose his discussions with the Raiders and assert his readiness to return to pro football. The idea was preposterous, the obstacles insurmountable, but the story nonetheless made huge headlines. Great as Sanders' physical gifts once were, his true genius lies in generating hype. At 35, far from his competitive peak, he retains a knack for breaking news without breaking a sweat. He can create a bigger fuss with less exertion than even Ozzie Osbourne's offspring. How much help Sanders could provide after his prolonged layoff is questionable. But giving the Raiders a free look would have been folly. If Sanders were able to contribute to the Raiders, their rivals would have been guilty of negligence. Besides, blocking the move cost nothing, provided those teams submitting claims had enough cap room to absorb 1/17th of Sanders' 2001 salary ($210,000). That the Chargers were awarded Sanders' rights was based on their relative position in the standings. That the Chargers are coached by Marty Schottenheimer made the development a delicious irony.

Fantasy football Team gear "I remember that Atlanta game when he was with us (the 49ers in 1994). He told me that week he was going to bait the guy and let him catch a few then he was going to pick one off, run it right in front of their bench and high-step into the end zone. He told me he had a vision. He called it. Then he did it." former 49ers director of football operations Dwight Clark, 1998
Look for the sparkling jewelry, the engaging smile and the confident, almost arrogant strut. Those are dead giveaways that Deion Sanders is preening for the cameras and media hordes he consistently attracts. Prime Time is always working the angles, whether perpetuating his glitzy off-field image or enhancing his reputation as the best and most stylish coverage cornerback in the NFL a reputation borne of superior athleticism and in-your-face, never-give-an-inch confidence. Sanders is foremost a playmaker who uses blazing speed to energize his team and sting opposing clubs in every way imaginable. He can score on an interception, electrify a crowd with a dazzling punt return, go deep as an occasional wide receiver or take a handoff on an end-around. Sanders produced five plays of 55 yards or longer for the Dallas Cowboys in 1998 one interception return, three punt returns, one reception and scored three touchdowns, giving him 20 for his career.

Barry Switzer was upset about the Dallas Cowboy's losing record, so he decided to learn Steve Mariucci's secret. Switzer travelled to a 49er practice and asked Mariucci, "Coach, why is your team so good? What's your secret?" To answer Switzer, Mariucci called Steve Young over. "Steve," he asked, "Who's your father's brother's nephew?" Young answered, "That's easy. It's me." Then, Mariucci turned to Switzer and said, "That's the secret, Barry. A smart quarterback. You've got to have a smart quarterback." Thinking he finally had all the tools he would need, Switzer returned to Texas and the Cowboy workout. Promptly, he called over Troy Aikman, asking him, "Aikman! Who's your father's brother's nephew?" Troy looked perplexed, thought a minute and asked, "Coach, can I get back to you after practice on that one?" Disgusted, Switzer said, "OK." During practice, Aikman talked to Deion Sanders. "Deion, coach just asked me the weirdest question. Who's your father's brother's nephew?" Sanders told him, "Duh! That's easy. It's me!" After practice, Aikman caught up with Switzer, "Coach, I think I've got it. My father's brother's nephew is Deion Sanders."

DEION SANDERS Analyst, THE NFL TODAY Former two-sport star Deion Sanders, who played in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, and Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants, joined THE NFL TODAY as a feature reporter/contributor in September 2001. This year, he will serve as a studio analyst joining Jim Nantz, Dan Marino and Boomer Esiason at the desk. Sanders, a 12-year NFL veteran who is considered by many to be one of the greatest cornerbacks of all time, was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and is the only person in professional sports history to play in both the World Series (1992) and the Super Bowl (1994, 1995). A master punt returner, he holds the NFL record with 18 touchdowns scored on returns - punts (6), kickoffs (3), fumble recoveries (1) and interceptions (8). Sanders finished his career with 22 touchdowns (including playoffs) and 49 interceptions. He is second in NFL history with eight career interception returns for touchdowns, trailing only Hall of Famer Ken Houston, who had nine. Sanders is also the only player in Super Bowl history to have both a pass reception and interception. Sanders was the fifth overall draft pick by the Falcons in 1989, where he played five seasons (1989-93). He spent one season (1994) with the 49ers, helping the team win the Super Bowl and was named defensive player of the year despite joining the team late because of baseball. Sanders spent the next five seasons (1995-99) with the Cowboys before finishing his career with the Redskins in 2000. In 1996, he played regularly on both offense and defense for the Cowboys, becoming the NFL's first two-way starter since Chuck Bednarik in 1962.

"I put my trust in Jesus and asked him into my life. And as soon as I had realized what I had done I was so excited I had to tell somebody, so I got on the phone and called my attorney and said, "Eugene, I did it!". Eugene must've been scared out of his mind, with me calling him so late at nite, especially after everything I had been thru during the previous year. So he said, "what, Deion? what did you do?" I said, "I got saved!" That was the beginning and Eugene was excited to know that I had finally found the Lord. But I'll never, never forget that experience." "After that little things started to change, I was still going through all the mess, but the more I read, and the more I learned about Christian life, the easier it became to deal with the bad stuff." Deion grew up in Fort Meyers, Fla. He lived with his mother and stepfather; his parents were divorced when he was very young. He started playing football at the young age of 8. He was a star even at that young age. He played running back, and every time he touched the ball, he scored a touchdown. Soon he was playing on teams with kids older than he was, yet he was still the star. Baseball was the same; he was always the best on the team. While walking ome from practices, he had to pass by alot of dark places, where he would run as fast as he could past them. Which is what he says contributed to his speed; what he called racing the dark.
