Robert L. Smith's award-winning photograph, "Football Ballet." This photo of Paul Costa's acrobatic catch of a Jack Kemp pass went on to claim several state and local awards in 1965. It's proudly displayed on the front cover of Bob Smith's 35-year retrospective on the Buffalo Bills, "A View Through the Lens Of Robert L. Smith."
Robert L. Smith was asked to shoot the press photos for a fledgling football team called The Buffalo Bills, who were inaugural members of the American Football League. He made time for the job over the succeeding years, through the back-to-back AFL championships in 1964 and 1965 ... merging into the National Football League ... the dismal years that included a 1-and-13 season to forget in 1971 ... the run to glory by O.J. Simpson ... the arrival of Jim Kelly ... and then the four straight Super Bowls, as the Bills became the team of the 90's.
Through it all, Bob Smith kept a photographic record of the highs and lows of life in professional football. The gems of his massive collection have been gathered in a 192-page, 8.5" by 11" book that you will look back through again and again, reliving the rise of Western New York's pride and joy, the Buffalo Bills.

A View Through the Lens of Robert L. Smith: Photos 1960-1995
Robert L. Smith was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. His late father, R. Tex Smith, an amateur photographer, instilled an interest in this art form in his son at an early age. While a teenager he began his first commercial venture operating a film developing business in the Masten Avenue area of Buffalo. Bob attended Seneca Vocational High School majoring in the photography program. In later years he also attended the University of Buffalo. In 1950 he entered the U.S. Navy and served two years as a photographer in North Africa. Following his discharge he was employed at Bell Aircraft in the photography department. He has been the Chief Photographer of the Buffalo Bills Football Team since 1960 and has just completed a book titled A View Through the Lens of Robert L. Smith: Photos 1960-1995 . This is a collection of his favorite photos taken from the Bills' inception in 1960 through 1995. A percentage of all proceeds from the book will be donated to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and The Buffalo Bills Youth Foundation. Bob is the author and publisher of this book.

Robert Smith Quietly Helping
Charities, Training for Olympics

By J.C. Pennington
Former Ohio State and Minnesota Viking running back Robert Smith did not play in his Robert Smith Foundation (RSF) charity golf tournament Monday because his handicap was too low. He is not a "scratch" golfer but he is limping around with his right foot in a cast due to a torn tendon. Photo by J.C. Pennington
Eddie George (L) and Robert Smith (R) teamed up to raise money for the Robert Smith Foundation. Smith revealed that he has thoughts of competing in the Olympic decathlon but the injury has put that idea on hold, if not completely out of the question.
"I got into the training a little bit too heavy, too fast and tore the tendon in there," Smith said Sunday at his fund-raising event at the Hampton Inn and Suites in downtown Columbus. "I went two months without getting it checked because I just assumed that it was going to get better. When you play and little things hurt a little bit, you wait but this never got better. I finally went to see one of the OSU doctors and he took some films and sure enough, there you go."
With the 2004 Olympics just two years off, Smith is not sure the injury will heal in time to give him a shot at competing in an event for the first time in his life. It would be a daunting task for an athlete in his prime to compete in the two-day, 10-event competition consisting of: shot put, discus, javelin, high jump, long jump, pole vault, 100 meters, 1500 meters, 400 meters and the 110 meter hurdles. At 30 years old after four knee surgeries, three elbow surgeries and double hernia surgery, Smith is hardly in his prime. Oddly enough, his only concern is the pole vault.

Management Expert uses Cultural Metaphors to Expand Understanding of Doing Business Globally College Park, Md. – In his new book, Understanding Global Cultures: Metaphorical Journeys Through 23 Nations nd ed., Sage Publications, 2001), Martin J. Gannon uses cultural metaphors, including the Japanese garden and American football, to describe the values driving business activities in a given nation. Gannon is a professor of management and organization and director of the Center for Global Business at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland. "Sweden, for example, has freemen's laws stressing equality," says Gannon, pointing out that one’s ability to pay is taken into account. "One individual (with substantial financial means) may be fined several thousand dollars while another (with lesser means) is fined only $100 for the same offense. Sweden’s social system and business practices reflect this value. "Similarly business practices in Germany stress precision and synchronicity: the leader's role is similar to that of a symphonic conductor while the subordinate can shine at meetings and at work, but only at specific intervals. The subordinate, after all, can only be a soloist periodically."
