To use Denny's favorite sentence opener: Well! my brother Andy and I made a bet with my dad and my younger brother Jim before the start of the Vikings' season regarding how many games the Purple would win. Andy and I were shooting for "3-13 with Denny Green" and my dad was thinking 10-6. In the end, Andy and I took 6 wins and below; my dad took 7 wins and above. Whoever won the bet was treated to a free meal at a decent restaurant (~$25 per plate). As you all know, the Vikings went 5-11, and Andy and I consider the loss to Carolina in Week 1 (after which the Panthers went on to lose their last 15 games) and the loss to Detroit (which was the woeful Lions' first win after an 0-11 or 0-12 start) to be such monumental debacles that each warrants adding an extra loss to the final record and removing a win from the final record; therefore, in our minds "3-13 with Denny Green" was realized. My brother Jim, due to his community service work with "I'm With Stupid" Anonymous, was able to score the only private interview with the ousted Vikings' coach. Denny doesn't say much to surprise us, but it's still insightful. The audio and the text are below for your entertainment.

My Favorite Players list is below. I have a hard time explaining to people why I like a certain player. Not all my favorite players are on my favorite team. For example, my favorite team is Minnesota, but If you look at my top ten list only three Vikings are on it. You don't see Randy Moss or Dante Culpepper on that list and the reason I give to people is they just haven't been in Minnesota long enough. Although give me time, its hard not to have those two guys on your list because they bring a lot to the plate when they come to play on Sunday. Most of the players are on the list because I loved watching them play. Other players I liked for no other reason than I just did. Here is my list: 1) Joey Browner, SS, Minnesota Vikings - I just loved watching him play!! Joey was just an assassin in football pads. The Intimidator!! 2) Scott Studwell, MLB, Minnesota Vikings - Blood, Sweat and Tears since 1979!! John Scott Studwell wasn't the best MLB. He was only named to 2 Pro-Bowls, but he brought a lot to a defense that in the late 80s and early 90s was one of Football's best. 3) Aeneas Williams, CB, St. Louis Rams - Deion, Deion, Deion...Big Deal!! Aeneas WAS better, IS STILL better, and WILL ALWAYS be a better CB. Aeneas is Pure Class!!

Farina now at Auburn AUBURN NAMES LAURA FARINA HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH AUBURN Laura Farina (Volleyball '91) has been named head volleyball coach at Auburn University according to an announcement made today by Athletic Director David Housel and Senior Women's Administrator Barbara Camp. Farina, 32, comes to Auburn from Marquette University, where she has served as head coach for the last three years. She places Kevin Renschler, who resigned after two seasons at Auburn. ''I am looking forward to joining the Auburn family and being part of an athletic program that has such a strong competitive reputation,'' Farina said. ''We have a challenge in front of us to build a volleyball program that will be successful competitively. Our goal will be to establish a program that the Auburn community will be proud of for its accomplishments both on and off the court. I am excited about our future and am looking forward to getting started.'' Farina took over a program at Marquette that had won only 11 matches the year prior to her arrival and led it to two seasons of 18 wins or more. She coached seven all-Conference USA players, one all-region selection and 15 of her players earned all-Academic honors during her tenure.

'Duh' Picks
Week 5
by Mike Wrenn and Dave Lyste, Contributing Writers I don't want to say it again, but I think it's necessary since Mike has started out with a record of 0-8. Mike, you need to lay off the sauce. I can understand being 3-5 or 2-6, but come on-0-8. My grandma could have picked games better then that, and she thinks the Minnesota Twins are a football team. With a record of 5-3 on the season, Dave will try to pull even further ahead while Mike tries to get a point on the board in the fifth week. Chicago at Minnesota Mike: The Vikings have proved that if I don't pick them, they will win. I think it would be a benefit to all you Vikings' fans out there if I never pick them again, but I will pick them this week. The Vikings looked horrible in the second half last week when they almost let the game go into overtime against the Bucs. I think the Vikings have finally found out that they can still throw the ball deep to Randy Moss. This opens up the possibility for them to keep teams on their toes. The Bears were coming off a quick win against the Saints last week and will be losing this week as quickly as Clinton's pants can come down. Dave: Just as I said last week, throw the ball to Moss. I don't understand why you wouldn't keep doing something that has worked so well. You never saw the Chicago Bulls give the ball to BJ Armstrong every time Michael Jordan was out on the court. That's why I don't understand why the Vikings don't throw deep every once in a while. The Vikings defense looked decent against the Bucs last week. Maybe if they bring back Scott Studwell, Keith Millard and Joey Browner they will be even better. The Bears didn't look too great last week, and this week they will look even worse. The Vikings might see a little bit of rookie quarterback Cade McNown by the end of the game.

Sunday, 04/13/2003 Fire and Rain, Records and Pain, Vikes fans 'Bear Down' in Chi-town!
By Marcus "Mookie Vike" Anderson The following is a review of a Roadtrip by a gang of Purple Tailgaters to Chicago, IL for the October 15, 2000 NFL nationally televised game between the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears. It was truly a great tailgate and we enjoyed meeting the Bears fans and partying with them! The Accidental Norseman is Hunted by Bears I was walking up the stairs toward exit of the South End Zone of Soldier Field screaming to anyone within earshot, "6-0, BABY! The VIKES ARE 6-0! YOU Like That? Woo Hooo!" It had been at least 10 minutes since the Vikes ran out the clock on the Bears 2 yard line, clinching a 28-16 Central Division victory. And it had been at least one-hour hour since the first wave of Bears fans realized their fate, engaging in a mass exodus into the Chicago Night. I could hear the din of Vikings fans in the Northeast endzone, cheering on their Nordic victors as they left the field. I turned back to see Vikings tossing things into the stands, and scanned the stadium to find the three other Purple buddies who I had roadtripped with for over 6-hours and stayed overnight in a cheap Chicago suburb hotel the previous day. They were nowhere to be found. After many hours of tailgating with Vikings fans in the Bears parking lot, and cheering with them for 60 minutes of NFL football, I was suddenly "solo riding in enemy territory!" As I caught the eye of a pack of Bears fans about 20 rows up to my left, I felt as if I was now the hunted! Wearing my size 4X #84 jersey over my Vikings hooded sweatshirt and raincoat, I must of looked like the biggest version of a Randy Moss Superfreak that these Bears fans had ever seen! In this scenario, I felt ridiculous, but not ashamed. I was proud to be a Viking fan with a 6-0 record.

Loney By JEFF WEBSTER
T-R Asst. Sports Editor

This is his second stint in the NFL, as he was previously the offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals during the 1993 season.
While with Arizona Loney was involved in the draft but not the scouting combines, a change from his current obligations.
In fact, most professional draft watchers have the Vikings, who hold the seventh pick in the first round barring any trade action, taking tackle Bryant McKinnie from Miami with their initial selection.
Loney was reticent to discuss names or draft strategy, but pointed to the clear need of shoring up the tackle position.
Loney explained that the Vikings employ six area scouts and also use the services of several scouting combines to gain insight on players. Such additional input allows the team to make sure a potentially valuable player is not overlooked and also insures that standouts are not missed simply because they played at a small school.

Kansas City Chiefs 1989 team preview BY TOM MITSOFF How bad did the pro football fortunes in Kansas City become last year? At least one national broadcaster got into the habit of referring to the 1988 Chiefs as the "Chefs." Was it because Kansas City could never get cooking in 1998? Was it because their performance reminded one more of pastry-flipping Frenchmen than gridiron gladiators? Was it because the team left such a bad taste in the mouths of its fans? Probably all of the above. Having watched a 1986 playoff team turn very sour in two years under Coach Frank Gansz, Owner Lamar Hunt decided after the season that it was time to stir things up. Instead of gently beating the mixture with a whisk, Hunt grabbed an industrial-strength high-speed power mixer and went to work. The result: Most of the ingredients of the 1998 Chiefs wound up sprayed hither and yon, replaced by an almost completely new recipe. The old saying, "You can't tell the players without a menu," (or something like that) certainly applies to the Chiefs in 1989.

Headline: ILLINI.STO Publish Date: 10/07/1991 By Kevin Allenspach Staff Reporter Champaign, Ill. The Gopher football team is getting quieter all the time. Saturday at Illinois, Minnesota failed to make much noise on the field in losing to the 22nd-ranked Illini, 24-3 at Memorial Stadium. And there wasn't much noise in the locker room afterward, although perhaps there should have been. The Gophers (0-1 in Big Ten, 1-3 overall) had just lost their first Big Ten opener in three years and completed their sixth straight quarter without a touchdown. Some silent Minnesota football players shuffled to the showers out of sight from the on-field Illini victory celebration without saying much. Center Chip Brixius softly told quarterback Marquel Fleetwood to keep his spirits up. But it's getting harder and harder for the team to do that. Fleetwood and the rest of the offense had another anemic showing, but the defense held Illinois quarterback Jason Verduzco to 173 yards passing. Verduzco, the nation's total offense leader going into the game, completed only 16 of 30 passes and was intercepted once. On the ground, Minnesota allowed a variety of Illini backs to total 174 yards, most coming when they were already sufficiently ahead. ``I was real pleased with the blocking we had,'' Illinois coach John Mackovic said of his run-oriented offense. ``I think for us to be a factor in the Big Ten this year, that will be one of the areas that will make it possible. When we win like this, I'll call more runs.'' Minnesota's offense was so bad that Fleetwood was removed in the fourth quarter for backup Scott Schaffner. Fleetwood managed to get Minnesota in position for its only points of the day, a 38-yard Aaron Piepkorn field goal, with 37 seconds left in the first half. But he was held to 16 yards rushing on seven carries and completed only 13 of 29 passes. By the time Schaffner entered the game with seven minutes to go, the Gophers had mostly second-and-third-string players in the game. The bench was nearly silent. ``We just didn't play well enough on offense,'' Gopher coach John Gutekunst said. ``We didn't use our downs effectively and we didn't dominate any part of the (offensive) game. We tried to establish the run because you have to have some kind of threat on the ground. I think that's something we haven't done since the fourth quarter against San Jose State (Minnesota's lone win).'' The effect of three consecutive losses is beginning to show on the players. ``Everybody's going crazy trying to figure it out,'' senior wide receiver Keswic Joiner said. ``What can we say? We're trying as hard as we can. You can see the frustration in our defense. They do their job and we can't score.'' The defense isn't pounding on any lockers, yet there may be some quizzical looks late in the game. ``A good team is well-rounded,'' Gopher defensive end Ben Williams said. ``I'm sick of saying that we're learning from our mistakes. Whether it's the offense or the kicking game or special teams or the defense, it doesn't matter. We've got to be more mentally in the game. What matters is we've got to start winning.'' Minnesota stayed close until the final 15 minutes, trailing only 10-3 at the end of three quarters. But the defense couldn't hold out anymore as Illinois running back Kameno Bell rushed for a 2-yard touchdown, then added a 9-yarder in the final three minutes to put the game away. The Gophers crossed into Illinois territory only twice in the second half. The Illini scored first when Chris Richardson booted a 28-yard field goal with the aid of a gusty 20-mph wind behind him. After that, Minnesota stopped Illinois twice before running back Steve Feagin's 5-yard scoring run up the middle. Piepkorn's field goal cut the lead to 10-3, 37 seconds before halftime. The defense then held Illinois on three possessions and kept them off the scoreboard until the fateful fourth quarter. In the meantime, the Gopher offense couldn't score. ``I was really surprised they didn't pass more,'' Illinois defensive back Marlon Primous said. ``Coming in here, we expected them to be a little more open, and to throw it more. But they stayed with that running game. ``It helped us because they never ran a pass route for more than 20 yards. That way we had all our guys bunched up near the line of scrimmage. It made it easier to make the tackles.'' Some Illinois players still weren't satisfied with the score. ``We wanted the shut out,'' linebacker Dana Howard said. ``We didn't want them to have the field goal. If it wasn't for a personal foul on us, they probably wouldn't have gotten it.'' Gopher notes: Free safety Andre Thaddies suffered a concussion and had to leave the game early ... Guard Robert Rogers sprained his ankle, further compounding the Gopher offensive line problems. Former Vikings linebacker Scott Studwell was honored before the game. Studwell played at Illinois from 1973-1976. He also made a pre-game speech to the Illini Friday night ... The Illini are fighting to keep their mascot Chief Illiniwek, but are getting pressure from those who say that it is too discriminatory. One fan, wearing a sticker that read ``Save the Chief,'' said that they only use the mascot during football season and even then only at halftime.

Tice shakes up Vikes
On his first day as head coach, Tice dismissed a fifth assistant, challenged his starting quarterback to get better and promised that none of his players would loaf. He was even reportedly planning to add disgraced coach George O'Leary to his staff. ``I think there needs to be more communication between each department,'' Tice said. ``We are excited about the opportunity to have everyone in the organization feel like they can think freely and their thoughts will be listened to.'' Green's tenure in Minnesota ended last week because he had apparently lost control of some of his players, but the absolute power Green had as coach and vice president of football operations often left some out of important decisions. So Tice and owner McCombs are out to make sure that changes. But that doesn't mean Tice won't be shaking things up. That includes the plan to hire O'Leary as defensive line coach, which the St. Paul Pioneer Press first reported on its Web site Thursday. O'Leary, who quit five days after being hired as Notre Dame coach when he was found to have lied on his resume, declined Thursday to confirm the report in an interview with The Associated Press.
