A bright light goes dark too soon He would get up early on Saturday mornings, drive to the local library and read to children he didn't know.
He would walk into the hospital with teddy bears in both arms and cry when the parents would call later and tell him their boy had died clutching his football card to his chest.
He would go from locker to locker, demanding at least $100 from each of his rich teammates because this was the week he had decided he wanted to raise $14,000 to feed 750 families.
He would pay to send 18 strangers to college, just because, and he would write a single check to cover the $61,500 in library fines accrued by Kansas City kids.
He would be on his way to practice, making a cell phone call to McDonald's here and another to Hyatt there, and next thing you know 700 inner-city Miami kids were at a camp instead of on the streets.
Derrick Thomas would . . .
``He would do so much that nobody knew about,'' Dorecia Tepe said Tuesday afternoon, just after learning Thomas had died. ``I can tell you he was like an angel God sent to protect our son.''
You want to know how valuable a man we lost Tuesday?

a tribute SUIT column by Chris Jungle Ever since I understood the concept of football, I've been a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. My parents lived in KC for a brief stint while I was a young child, and I've rooted for the NFL team practically all of my life. I endured the 1980's where the team regularly endured losing records. After a dismal 3-13 season in 1988, the Chiefs drafted with the fifth pick a linebacker from Alabama named Derrick Thomas, and the team changed instantly. In Thomas' first year, the team went 8-7-1 and narrowly missed the playoffs. The Chiefs would make the playoffs seven of the next eight years. Thomas went to nine pro bowls in eleven years, making a habit of sacking the quarterback. He patented the quarterback strip, slapping his hand at the ball instead of trying to drive through the quarterback' ribs. He caused the league to start recording the statisticForced Fumbles. He holds the record (with others) for most sacks in one game when he got to Dave Krieg of the Seattle Seahawks seven times. On the last play of the game, Thomas almost got Krieg an eighth time, but instead the quarter back shook him off and through a thirty yard touchdown pass to win the game. Tying the record was bittersweet. Number 58 had the ability to turn the tide of football game. His mere presence altered how teams played against the Chiefs. Fans packed the stadium like never before, and Arrowhead became one of the most feared places to play. Derrick Thomas' only professional team was the Chiefs, so I never had to root against him. Simply put, he is my favorite football player of all time.

    Way too fast
By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief There is fast, too fast and way too fast. Derrick Thomas the football player was fast. He ran fast. He got to the quarterback fast. "He’s a very talented athlete who can move very fast, very quick," said John Bunting in 1995, when he was the Chiefs’ LB coach. In 1992, when he was Thomas’ teammate, DE Neil Smith said, "The dude’s got closer speed. But the thing about Derrick is he’s got this great ability to get low to the ground and not lose a step. "He has the ability to turn the corner on a dime. It’s something you have to have strong ankles to do. The guy’s quick upfield, but when he turns the corner, he really turns the corner. He can just wheel his body around. It’s something you just can’t teach." Derrick Thomas the driver was too fast. Thomas was at the wheel of his 1999 Chevrolet Suburban headed for Kansas City International Airport when it veered into the median and rolled several times. An icy snow was falling at the time, and Clay County prosecutor Don Norris said he viewed the accident as weather-related.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2000 The Associated Press Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas died Tuesday in a Miami hospital where he was being treated for injuries suffered in a car accident. Chiefs in grief Linebacker’s death rocks friends, coaches The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If you had to block Derrick Thomas, you feared that quick first step that led straight to your quarterback’s blind side. As an assistant with the Raiders and Chargers, Gunther Cunningham would lie sleepless at night trying to think of a way to stop Thomas. But the stunning news of Thomas’ death Tuesday left the Chiefs head coach thinking not of sacks or forced fumbles — but only of that infectious smile. That will stay with anyone who ever saw Thomas — from the fans who called in tears to sports talk radio and made requests for such songs as Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” to Cunningham to Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson, who frequently referred to Thomas as his son and meant it. “I never looked at Derrick Thomas as a football player,” Cunningham said. “I looked at Derrick Thomas as one of the finer people I’d ever been around and a friend. The thing I’ll always remember about Derrick is his smile. That’s the one thing I’ll never get out of my mind.

When there was a need this one man would go from locker to locker, demanding at least $100 from each of his rich teammates because he had decided he wanted to raise $14,000 to feed 750 families.
