Jim Thorpe
  • About Me School Report Feedback ... Go Back to Report On May 28, 1888, James Francis Thorpe was born to Hiram and Charlotte Thorpe on the Sac and Fox Indian reservation with his twin Charlie. When Jim was eight years old Charlie died. After his brother's death, his parents sent him to Haskell Institute where Jim was introduced to baseball and football. Jim was at Haskell when his mother died. In 1904, at age fifteen Jim Thorpe went to Carlisle Indian School
in Pennsylvania. After two months his father died. At Carlisle Jim met Glenn "Pop" Warner who would help begin his great athletic career. Pop was the track and football coach at Carlisle, and put Jim on the track and football team. Jim was the best athlete on both teams. Carlisle's football team was one of the best teams at the time. For a summer vacation Jim went to North Carolina to play baseball for which he received $60, and this caused him problems later on. Jim Thorpe went to the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. He won both the decathlon and pentathlon. King Gustav of Sweden called him the greatest athlete in the world.

100 Greatest Players of All-Time
#10 Jim Thorpe Jim Thorpe, Halfback
Carlisle Indian School, 1907, 1911-1912 Acknowledged as one of the greatest all-around American athletes ever, Jim Thorpe is most famous for his Olympic achievements in the decathlon and pentathlon and his greatness as a professional football and baseball player. As a college football player, it could be argued that Thorpe, also known as Bright Path, was the greatest individual talent ever taking a team to a title all by himself. It wasn't a given that Thorpe was going to be one of the giants of college football. Glenn "Pop" Warner had no real interest in the five-foot tall Thorpe for the football team and wanted him to run track. After sitting on the bench for the football team in 1907, Thorpe ran track in 1908 before leaving to play baseball in the Carolina League. After going home to Oklahoma after his arm gave out, Warner summoned Thorpe back to Carlisle, Pennsylvania to prepare for the 1912 Olympics. When Thorpe came back, he was the 6-1 and 190 pounds and the perfect athlete for the football team. 25 touchdowns, 198 points and a national title in 1912 later, Thorpe was a college football legend.

On May 28 and 29, 1851, the Ohio Woman's Rights Convention met in Akron . Mrs. Frances D. Gage, convention president, began the proceedings with a stirring call to arms: Are not the natural wants and emotions of humanity...shared equally by both sexes? Does man hunger and thirst, suffer cold and heat more than woman? Does he love and hate, hope and fear, joy and sorrow more than woman? Does his heart thrill with a deeper pleasure in doing good? Can his soul writhe in more bitter agony under the consciousness of evil or wrong? Is the sunshine more glorious, the air more quiet, the sounds of harmony more soothing, the perfume of flowers more exquisite, or forms of beauty more soul-satisfying to his senses than to hers. To all these interrogatories every one will answer, No! "Opening Address," The Proceedings of the Woman's Rights Convention, held at Akron, Ohio, May 28 and 29, 1851 , published 1851.

Regardless of whether or not we are satisfied with the various millennium rankings touted by news and sports organizations, we can be proud of the legacy he leaves. The most telling testament to that legacy is the eloquence with which his descendants continue his story. This page is dedicated to Grace, Gail, Jack and Bill Thorpe, and their relatives who continue to keep him alive in all of our hearts. It's sometimes a good thing to be able to look critically at the history that was Carlisle, but it's always a good thing to experience the magic of what Jim Thorpe brought to Carlisle. Thank you for your tireless efforts on behalf of your dad, and Carlisle.
    With great respect

    JIM THORPE
The Greatest Athlete in the World
Track, football, baseball - and the Olympic Games. All were conquered by this Indian descendant. Jim Thorpe was born in Indian Territory that is now Oklahoma in 1888 with the name Wa-tho-huck, which means Bright Path. He was part Sac and Fox indian, with some French and Irish also. In 1904 he enrolled at the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It was here that his athletic abilities were developed. He became a star on the school's track and football teams. He was named to the All-American Football Team twice, but his greatest achievements came during the 1912 Olympic Games in Stocholm, Sweden. At the Olympics, he won two gold medals, in the most physically demanding events there were - the five-event Pentathlon and the ten-event Decathlon. He not only won these events, but his performance caused King Gustav V of Sweden to say to him, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world."

A large British immigrant Hiram G. Thorpe came to America to be a trapper. He had jet black hair and a bronze complexion. He married the daughter of Chief Black Hawk, of the Thunder clan. In 1887 they settled in the Sac and Fox village on the banks of the North Canadian River. Eventually the Sac and Fox nation would be moved to a reservation in Oklahoma. They had a son Hiram P. The younger Hiram P. became a great athlete instead of a great warrior. On Saturday the entire village would gather for a picnic on the Thorpe homestead. There would be running events, jumping and wrestling. Hiram usually won. He married Charlotte (No- ten-o-quah), and on May 28, 1888 in a one-room cabin, Wa- tho- huck or "Bright Path" was born.
Though to the world he would be known as Jim Thorpe. Hiram P. would eventually have five wives and 19 legally identified children. When Hiram saw Jim for the first time, he immediately saw the resemblance to Black Hawk. Jim had a twin brother Charlie. Jim and Charlie were not alike in appearances The brothers did everything together. Two weeks before their eighth birthday Hiram wanted to take the boys hunting. Charlie was sick so Jim went with his father alone. Jim was given his first rifle and managed to bring down a buck. He proudly brought it home only to find Charlie had died of pneumonia. After that Jim kept to himself. Being only nine years old, he would go out raccoon hunting with his dog. Often making camp and not coming home for days. He was barely inside at all.
