He was the greatest football player in the history of the National Football League, changing the way the game was played. It seemed appropriate that the Museum devoted to the greatest baseball player would also become the Museum devoted to the greatest football player. Last March, Johnny Unitas donated his football collection to the Babe Ruth Museum because he wanted to "give something back to the fans of Baltimore."

    JOHNNY UNITAS
Johnny U. Johnny Unitas played in 10 Pro Bowls, was picked for five all-league teams, was Player of the Year three times, and led the Baltimore Colts to NFL Championships in 1958 and 1959. He also set an NFL record by throwing at least one touchdown pass in 47 straight games, a record that no one has yet come close to. His 1958 championship victory over the New York Giants is often cited as the greatest game ever played. John Constantine Unitas was born in Pittsburgh on May 7, 1933. He played football at St. Justin's, a small Catholic high school. He did not play quarterback, however, until his junior year. He wanted to play for Notre Dame, but was told he was too small. He was offered a scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh despite being fairly small, but did not meet the academic requirements. He did accept a scholarship to the University of Louisville where he started at quarterback for 3 and a half years. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1955, he was not thought to be much of an asset, and Coach Walt Keisling cut him from the team without giving him a real chance. He ended up playing that season on a semi-pro team in Pittsburgh for six dollars a game. In 1956, however, he got his big break as the Baltimore

Volume XXVIII Issue 8 October 10, 2002 Browse Past Issues Eulogizing Unitas: Baltimore, NFL loses quarterback legend
    Jennifer Tufaro - Reporter
Caption While the nation mourned the events of Sept. 11, the people in Baltimore received the sad and shocking news that their own hero, Johnny Unitas, had suffered a sudden heart attack while exercising at the age 69. His accomplishments remain legendary. His record of throwing touchdown passes in 47 consecutive games makes him commonly viewed as the best quarterback to ever play between the lines. The Baltimore Colts’ sudden-death victory led by Unitas over the New York Giants in 1958, is regarded by many fans to be the greatest football game ever played. People in Baltimore felt they were experiencing the loss of a local hero who had been a prominent figure in their life. Everyone had their story of devoted friendship or their momentary encounters with the man known affectionately as Johnny. The common thread of all these recollections was that Johnny Unitas was different from other modern day sports heroes and celebrities. Not long before he died, Unitas donated all of his football memorabilia to the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore. Interestingly, while he considered this memorabilia to be junk, his wife recognized that it would be considered very special

The passing of a football legend
Johnny Unitas dies at the age of 69
Unitas had a heart attack while working out at a physical therapy centre in the Baltimore suburb of Timonium, said Vivienne Stearns-Elliott, a spokeswoman for St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. Doctors and nurses at the scene could not resuscitate him, she said.
Unitas underwent emergency triple-bypass surgery in March 1993 after a heart attack. "Johnny U," with his trademark crewcut and black hightops, was the first to throw for 40,000 yards and now ranks seventh, surpassed by a group of quarterbacks who played after him, with rules that make passing easier. Unitas retired after the 1973 season with 22 NFL records, among them marks for most passes attempted and completed, most yards gained passing, most touchdown passes and most seasons leading the league in TD passes. "Johnny Unitas will always be a legendary name in NFL history," said league commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "One of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game, he epitomized the position with his leadership skills and his ability to perform under pressure." Unitas completed 2,830 of 5,186 passes for 40,239 yards and 290 touchdowns. He completed at least one touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games, a record not challenged since it was set from 1956-60.

s="na";c="na";j="na";f=""+escape(document.referrer) Johnny Unitas Transcended Generations Al Lackner, Senior Editor This is not meant to be an obituary for the great Johnny Unitas, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 69. I've added some links to papers in Baltimore that can do a much better job of paying tribute to Johnny U than I ever could. That's because to fully understand the legend that was Johnny Unitas, you almost had to have lived in the city of Baltimore. Unitas gave his heart and soul to the city, and consequently the two almost go hand-in-hand. It's a shame that too many of today's football fans never got to see Johnny Unitas in his prime. As a member of the thirty-something generation myself, my own memories of Unitas are sadly skewed. That's because my earliest memories of him were of his sad final days in Baltimore and San Diego. No, I was a Joe Namath fan as a kid. And interestingly enough, it was my infatuation with Broadway Joe that ultimately led me to discover the REAL Johnny Unitas. Everyone remembers Namath and the Jets' shocking upset of the Colts in Super Bowl III. Unitas had injured his elbow during the final game of the preseason and was replaced by Earl Morrall. So as not to interfere with team chemistry, Head Coach Don Shula decided to go with Morrall in the Super Bowl. And why not? Morrall had been named the NFL's MVP that season. But the Colts' offense failed to get anything going in the first half, and Don Shula told Unitas that he would start the second half.

(THEME) This is Doug Johnson. On our program today: We play music by Pink Floyd ... Report about the death of an American football hero. And tell about an American artist who painted Native Americans of the Old West. George Catlin Exhibit HOST: The Smithsonian Institution's Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. has opened an exhibition of four-hundred paintings and other objects by American artist George Catlin. Shep O'Neal tells us about him. ANNCR: George Catlin was born in the eastern state of Pennsylvania in seventeen-ninety-six. He went to school to learn to be a lawyer. But he always wanted to be an artist. He soon quit the legal profession and became a painter. [Image Removed] In the early eighteen-twenties, George Catlin saw a delegation of American Indians on their way to Washington, D.C. He was extremely interested in them. He decided to paint as many of the tribes of Native Americans as he could find. From about eighteen-thirty to eighteen-thirty-six, George Catlin traveled deep into areas of the country where few white people had ever been. He traveled thousands of kilometers and painted almost everything he saw. He painted pictures of the land. He painted men, women, children, clothing and animals. He painted religious ceremonies, dances and ball games. He often painted as many as three pictures a day.

Johnny Unitas (1933-2002) John Constantine Unitas was born on May 7, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father died when Johnny was six, leaving Johnny's mother to raise her four children. Johnny helped the family by earning 75 cents a ton shoveling coal into basement bins. Unitas began his football career at St. Justin's High School . During Johnny's sophomore year, the starting quarterback broke his ankle. Johnny, it was decided, could throw the ball well enough and was moved to the QB position with less than a week to learn the entire offense. When it was time for Unitas to begin looking at colleges where he could play football, both Notre Dame and Indiana University were unwilling to take a gamble that his six foot, 138-pound frame would bulk up. Unitas received an offer from the
