Tim Walsh Last College:
UC-Riverside, '77
Position:
Head Football Coach
Record:
Career: 87-57, 13 years PSU: 60-43, 9 years
As Tim Walsh enters his tenth season as Head Football Coach at Portland State, it is remarkable to look back at all he has accomplished and the lengths that he has brought the program in that time. Last season, Walsh became the longest tenured football coach in PSU history, completing his ninth year and setting a new record for total games coached. Now as his tenth year begins, Walsh approaches the record for most football coaching victories at Portland State. But more than the games and the wins, Walsh has become what PSU football is all about. He has established a high level of accomplishment for his program which he refuses to compromise, and has maintained Viking football as the flagship program at the university. Walsh has also established a program that plays an exciting brand of football, consistently ranking among the top offensive teams in the nation (fourth in 2001 at 477.7 yards per game), with some of the most nationÕs exciting players. Stars and All-Americans of the past like Darick Holmes, Steve Papin, Charles Dunn, Jimmy Blanchard, Orshawante Bryant and Terry Charles have given way to stars of the present and future like Juston Wood and Ryan Fuqua. In the past three seasons, the Vikings have gone 23-11 reaching the playoffs in 2000. Having placed second in the Big Sky Conference to defending national champion Montana, Walsh is ready to take his program the next step. With a talented team for 2002, the Vikings are poised to do so.

FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Woodley steps up pursuit of excellence
August 29, 2002 BY BILL L. ROOSE FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER SAGINAW Fun time is over for Saginaw linebacker LaMarr Woodley. RELATED CONTENT
  • THE BIG QUESTION: Where will Saginaw's LaMarr Woodley go? "See, LaMarr plays a lot and hasn't always been serious about football," Trojans coach Don Durrett said. "He's starting to learn now and is much more focused, because he knows what's upon him." Upon him is the task of leading the defense of the second-ranked team in the state. Last season, Woodley made 112 tackles and 12 sacks as the Trojans marched to the Division 3 state semifinals. He also caused three fumbles and had eight pass deflections. Woodley is a 6-foot-2, 255-pound nightmare for quarterbacks and ballcarriers. Whether he lines up at defensive end or outside linebacker, Woodley can raise havoc in the backfield. "You can see everything on the outside and you can get to the quarterback pretty quick," Woodley said. "Most of the plays get run to the outside and then I'm there to stop them."

Pershing (7-5, 2-3): The Doughboys had a nice playoff run last year and could be in for more this time. DT/OG James Blair (6-3, 320) is one of the state's top linemen. FB Taurean Fears is a durable back who gained more than 700 yards. TB Jeremiah Moore, a physical runner with good speed, gained 1,268 yards. TB Charles Hawkins adds even more speed to the position. Nine return defensively, with Quinton Gray, Jeffrey Lindsey and Darrell McFadden making for a solid corps at LB. DB Otis Greenlaw intercepted six passes and blocked three punts, and DB/WR-QB Mike Blythe is eligible after transferring from Kettering. King (8-3, 4-1): A typically strong defense and an offense that can pass and run will make King a PSL contender again. DB Samad Cain will emerge as one of the top defenders in the state. Junior DE/TE Bernard Faithful will start for the third year, and LB Wendell Brown is tough against the run. The Crusaders return all three RBs Jeffrey Perry, Anton Ivy and Butler Benton. Ivy and Benton also start in the secondary. Antyon James and Nikkolas Anderson switch from tackles to guards and team with center Brandon Walker. QB Kevin Norris, always a fine runner, has improved his passing.

Bombers place eight on West All-Star Team
WINNIPEG, MB - The CFL today announced the players who make up the East and West Division All-Star teams. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers placed eight players on the West Division All-Star squad, which was chosen by members of the Football Reporters of Canada.
The Winnipeg players named to the West Division All-Star Team are:
    DEFENSIVE TACKLE DOUG BROWN
Size, speed and strength are all facets of Doug Brown's game. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive tackle uses these attributes to maximum advantage every game, which is one reason why the Big Blue led the CFL in 13 league defensive categories and were second in three others.
One of the league's most impressive defenders, Brown is the player who attracts extra attention from opposing offensive linemen so that his teammates can succeed. His talent for stopping the run and controlling the opponent's passing options is without parallel in the league.

The Wales team at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden
    By Dewi Hughes
BBC Sport Online After Wales claimed such an exhilarating and thoroughly deserved victory over Italy, comparisons with the team that qualified for the 1958 World Cup were bound to surface. The best Welsh side ever? Have your say The legendary team of John Charles and co is still the only Welsh side ever to qualify for the finals of a major international tournament. Fittingly Charles, a hero both in Wales and Italy, was presented to the crowd at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday. But now a new breed of talented and confident footballers are beating the world's best under the astute guidance of Mark Hughes. Having won their first two games in the Euro 2004 qualifiers, expectations are sky high that Wales have finally discovered a team capable of qualification.

BBC Sport Interactive Sport is dying in Wales' second city. Swansea's capitulation to old rivals Cardiff in the Welsh Premiership was a sad response to a week of politics that threatened to wipe the All Whites' name from top-level rugby. Perhaps all great things end this way. Historians would have us believe that the Roman Empire did not fall in a great cataclysmic event - it just kind of fizzled away. It may be stretching things to compare the decline and fall of Swansea sport to the end of the Caesars, but to those who care such things cannot be taken lightly. Clubs react to regional plans Petty's reign at the Vetch made Swansea a laughing stock Rugby disasters have been matched by the performances of the football side. Financially crippled, humiliated by the Tony Petty saga, and four points adrift at the bottom of Division Three.

Virginia fell to Boston College 31-13 in the 1994 Carquest Bowl (formerly the Blockbuster Bowl) as a disappointing second-half performance by the Cavaliers enabled the Eagles to pull away after leading by four points at halftime. UVa, making its third New Year's Day bowl appearance in five years, finished the season with a 7-5 record. Boston College quarterback Glenn Foleynamed the game's Most Valuable Playerovercame a shaky first-half start, finishing with 391 yards and three touchdowns passing to spark the Eagles' victory. The lead changed hands several times in the first 30 minutes before Boston College gained a 17-13 halftime advantage. Despite committing two first-half turnovers, BC also held the edge in total offensive yards (309 to 238), time of possession (16:01 to 13:59) and first downs (17 to 12). Virginia missed two first-half field goals (37 and 29 yards) and an extra-point attempt. UVa grabbed the early momentum on the third play of the game when Cavalier linebacker Jamie Sharper tipped a Foley pass into the hands of fellow linebacker Randy Neal. Neal returned the interception 19 yards to the BC 19-yard line. Tailback Jerrod Washington ran 11 yards for a touchdown two plays later, giving Virginia a 7-0 lead just over a minute into the game.
