United Way NFL public service announcements (airing throughout the NFL season) Jake Plummer tries to teach some kids about cardinals.
Back in the 1970s, the United Way, a fine charitable organization just trying to help the kids and bring a little love and money to America's communities, launched a series of PSAs in partnership with the NFL. You remember these spots: Burly NFL lineman with big hair, dressed in plaid pants and an ochre or lime-green polyester sport coat with lapels you could surf on, visits a hospital, plays with kids at a community center, helps feed the hungry, etc. They were warm-hearted, earnest little pitches at your heartstrings and purse strings. You choked up a little, felt good about living in a world where people even big-time athletes helped each other out, and you made a call. The campaign worked for years, as the United Way's fundraising totals (according to their website) climbed from $800 million in 1974 to more than $3.7 billion today. During the last couple of years (2000-02), though, the PSAs have been different. They look pretty much the same (although players' wardrobes have, mercifully, evolved toward something more casual and stylish over the years), and have the same earnest, straight-forward delivery: "This is Jake Plummer of the Arizona Cardinals. He helps United Way build stronger communities by supporting educational outings." But these days, they're played for laughs.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) - For the fifth time in six years, the Air Force football team has received the Commander in Chief Trophy for top gridiron play among the service academies. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee; Gen. Henry H. Shelton, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Gen. Michael E. Ryan, Air Force chief of staff; and Lt. Gen. Tad J. Oelstrom, Air Force Academy superintendent, Colorado Springs, Colo. During the 1997 season, the Falcons won their first seven games, finishing with a 10-2 record. REMEMBERING CHARLIE, the eulogy given by by Linda
As we come together today to remember God's son, Charlie, we each come with our own special memories in mind. Some of us have memories of a dear brother, or a loving and fun husband. Some of us remember a funny, kind and caring uncle, while others of us shared a special bond of friendship that left us a better person for knowing him. And even though we all remember him differently today, I think it is safe to say that Charlie knew how to make each of us smile. Even last Christmas, which was the first time some of us had seen him for quite some time, he was still making us laugh with police stories and jokes that only Charlie knew how to tell. So let us thank God for giving us Charlie for 58 short years. I am sure he was a loving son, and that grandma and grandpa were thrilled to welcome him home with them. I would imagine he entered the gates of heaven with one of his famous riddles or anecdotes, and I'm sure heaven overlooked a few of the words and let him tell it anyway! I'm also quite sure that some heavenly souls are still quietly chuckling at his stories.

November 22 OHIO STATE 20-14 GO BLUE! January 1 1998 Rose Bowl vs Washington St. 21-16 GO BLUE! Great defense beats good offense The slogan of defense wins championships held true at the 1998 Rose Bowl as Michigan defeated the Washington St. Cougars 21-16. Brian Griese took home the MVP award, as he outplayed Ryan Leaf, going 18-31 for 251 yards and three touchdown passes. The Wolverines exploited the meager Cougar secondary with 2 TD passes over 50 yards to Tai Streets. This seals the deal for the first Wolverine national championship since 1948. Chris Howard, playing his final game, rushed 19 times for 70 yards pacing the Wolverine rushing offense to 128 yards. Ryan Leaf passed for 331 yards, but completed less than 50% of his passes and threw only one touchdown. The Wazzu running attack managed only 68 yards on 28 carries. Dhani Jones came up very big, with 2 sacks. The Wolverines did a good job of keeping the pressure on Leaf. The much ballyhooed "Fab Five" (Wazzu's version is a disgrace to Jimmy, Ray, Jalen, Juwan, and Chris) made a few catches but also a few drops. There was some controversy surrounding the end of the game. And I'm not talking about the last 3 seconds. The rules clearly state that the clock will run after the chains are set to go, so I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the play before that, Washington State's receiver who caught the long pass (sorry don't remember who it was, we all watched) pushed Woodson to the ground blatantly! He obviously would not have caught this pass had he not slammed Charles to the ground. I guess there's some new rules in football where you can just slam your defender to the ground. I'll check on that. Earlier on that drive, I thought Charles had picked off a pass, but they called it incomplete. Well, a win is a win is a win, so I am satisfied.

As big a story as Charles Schulz’s announced retirement was in December, it was the poignancy of his death February 13, only hours before the last Sunday Peanuts strip hit the newsstands, that really sparked a collective "good grief." In eulogizing Schulz, many journalists seized the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of Peanuts. Yet in all the outpouring of reflective prose, the religious dimension of the country’s most beloved comic strip was too often missed or misconstrued. The Gospel According to Peanuts , which used individual strips as modern-day Christian parables. Thus far the book has sold 10 million copies, a figure that has "no doubt topped the number of sales of all books in theology-not-associated-with-cartoons published since 1965," writes Martin Marty in the foreword to a new edition out this year.

Florida State's Football Firsts Filed for Future! Taken from The Daily Democrat; October 21, 1947
by Fred Pettijohn
This is a sports writer's report to the far-flung football future. It's written particularly for the intra-space sports series of the super-sonic 1970s and '80s, who some day are going to dig back through the files in search of information on the "old gaffers" who played in Florida State University's first football game against Stetson back in 1947!
They'll enjoy looking this far into the past. The quaint old ads with the funny '47 model automobiles, silly old medicines like radium and sulfa and the old-fashioned football uniforms wow! Only the women's hats, now at a fantastic peak, will appear up-to-date! Intra-Planet Games Some day when they have a big intra-planet game coming up and want some background and historical material they can run these plays as "famous FSU firsts:"
The honor of handling the first FSU play and receiving her first kickoff went to Don Grant of Perry who took Stetson's kick on his own three and returned to the 31.
The first running play from scrimmage was by Wyatt "Red" Parrish, Chipley, right halfback who broke over his own right tackle and moved from the 31 to the 49 yard line almost breaking into the clear for a score. Parrish also racked up the initial FSU first down on the play.
