Lou Boudreau Fullname : Louis Boudreau
Born : 7/17/1917 in Harvey, Illinois Died Debut: Pos : SS Ht: Wt B: T: R Years Games AB Hits HR RBI SB Avg As a college athlete, Lou Boudreau seemed to have several options after his graduation. However, the captain of the basketball and baseball teams at the University of Illinois signed a deal to join the Cleveland Indians following his graduation. Big 10 officials heard about his agreement and ruled that Boudreau was ineligible to compete as an amateur in college. So, Boudrea appeared as a pinch hitter in one game with the Indians during the 1938 season. He also played professional basketball with Hammond, Indiana's entry into the National Basketball League. At the beginning of the 1939 season, Boudreau found himself with the Buffalo Bisons of the International League. Boudreau had played third base or caught during his college career, but Buffalo manager Steve O'Neill moved Boudreau to shortstop and teamed him up with second baseman Ray Mack. The two worked together beautifully and both were called up to Cleveland in the second half of the seasons. In his first full season with the Indians in 1940, Boudreau hit .295 and drove in 100 runs. His performance earned him a spot in the 1940 All-Star game. In the 1942 season, Boudreau, just 24, was named player-manager of the team. It made him the youngest individual ever to manage a Major League team from the beginning of a season.

    Lou Boudreau
Cubs broadcaster 1958-1987 Lou Boudreau was born on July 17, 1917, in Harvey, Illinois. He graduated from Thronton High School in Harvey and the University of Illinois, excelling in sports at both schools. He quickly made a name for himself in the professional ranks, playing his first game with the Cleveland Indians in 1938 and joining the team full-time in 1940 as shortstop. One of Lou's most remarkable on-field accomplishments occurred in 1942 when, at the age of 24, he was named player-manager and became the youngest person to manage a major league team for a full season. In 1948, the Indians, under Lou's leadership, won the World Series. During that season, Boudreau recorded a career high .355 average with 18 home runs, 106 runs batted in, 199 hits, and just nine strikeouts. He went 4 for 4 with two home runs in a one-game playoff with Boston for the league championship that year and was named American League MVP. He was also a seven-time All Star. His number 5 was retired by the Cleveland Indians. Boudreau's baseball career continued with player and manager assignments with the Boston Red Sox and a period as manager of the Kansas City Athletics. In 1958, Lou moved to the broadcast booth for the Chicago Cubs. With the exception of the 1960 season, when he managed the Cubs, Boudreau remained in the booth until 1987. During nearly three decades, he worked with such broadcast legends as Jack Quinlan, Jack Brickhouse and Vince Lloyd. The "good kid," as he was known, was popular with listeners because of his personality and knowledge of the game and was also known for the cow bell he would ring to celebrate Cub home runs or other exciting moments.

By Daily Herald Wire Services - Report - Legendary Cubs broadcaster Lou Boudreau, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, died Friday due to complications of diabetes. He was 84. Boudreau was brought into St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields on Friday afternoon in cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead there, said hospital spokeswoman Julie Miller. Memorial and funeral arrangements were not immediately available. The voice of the Cubs for nearly three decades, Boudreau teamed with Jack Quinlan and Vince Lloyd in the radio booth in addition to managing the North Siders in the 1960 season. He was also a member of University of Illinois Big Ten championship teams in both baseball and basketball. Boudreau was everything for the Cleveland Indians in 1948. He managed them, played shortstop and batted third. He was the AL MVP, homered twice to win a one-game playoff for the pennant, and most memorably, brought them their last World Series championship. "He was the greatest shortstop I ever saw," said Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller. "He was afraid of nobody. He was a great manager, teammate and friend. Just a great man. There is not a more gracious man than Lou Boudreau."
