45. Lou Bodreau (1917-2001)

Lou Bodreau
It was the top of the eighth inning, one out, runner on first, Cleveland Municipal Stadium, July 17, 1941. Joe DiMaggio had one last chance to keep his 56-game hitting streak alive after Indians third baseman Ken Keltner had twice robbed Joltin' Joe of base hits.
But Jim Bagby got DiMaggio to hit one more ground ball, this time to short. Lou Boudreau bare-handed the bad hop and tossed it to Ray Mack at second, who completed the double play to Oscar Grimes at first.
The Yankees won 4-3, but DiMaggio's streak ended.
Lou Boudreau was a hero in Cleveland, both as a player and a manager.
It was one of several defining moments in the career of Hall of Famer Louis Boudreau Jr., who died of cardiac arrest Friday, three weeks after having been admitted to James Olympia Fields Hospital in Frankfort, Ill., about 300 miles downstate from his birthplace in Harvey, Ill. He was being treated for a variety of problems resulting from an infection that spread to his kidneys and filled his lungs with fluids. He was 84.
"He was arguably the greatest position player in the history of Cleveland Indians' franchise," the team said in a statement released Friday afternoon. "He played the game with a passion and personified all that is good about the game of baseball."

Shortstop and the first Manager of the Kansas City Athletics 1955-1957
Cle. 1938-1950
Bos. 1951-1952
Hall of Fame induction 1970 232/300 ballots cast (77.33%) Son of a semi-pro ball player, Lou Boudreau was one of the best shortstops ever to grace a baseball diamond. Known for smart play and ability more than agility, Boudreau led AL shortstops in fielding percentage 8 times during his career, including his first full season, 1940, and also 1941-1944, 1946-1948. A seven-time All-Star (1940-1944, 1947-1948), his career fielding percentage was .973, at the time a record for major league shortstops. Aside from his excellent fielding, Boudreau was also an excellent hitter, leading the league in 1944 when he batted .327, and leading the league with 45 doubles in 1941 while also knocking 8 triples and 10 home runs. Incidentally he had also batted 46 doubles in 1940. He ranks 7th all-time in career batting average and on-base percentage for shortstops, and ranks 8th in slugging percentage. Boudreaus' first major league appearance came in 1938 when he appeared once as a pinch-hitter, and he was called-up permanently in 1939. During his third full season, at age 24, Boudreau was named player-manager of the Cleveland Indians which made him the youngest start-of-season manager in baseball history. It was Boudreau who later oversaw Bob Lemons' transition from an outfielder to a pitcher.
