Lou Limmer, One of BaseballÂ’s Nice Guys
By Max Silberman
One of the reunion regulars who always greets fans and fellow players alike with a big smile is former A’s first baseman Lou Limmer. Limmer came from a large, athletic family in the Bronx and was a star athlete at Manhattan Aviation High School, also attended by Whitey Ford a few years later. Upon graduation, Limmer joined the Army Air Corps where he served until 1946. His professional career began at Lexington, NC in 1946 and he used his home run power to climb to Lincoln NE. in 1948. At Lincoln in 1948, he hit 28 home runs and batted in 93 runs as a team-mate of Bobby Shantz, Nellie Fox, Earle Brucker Jr. and Bob Wellman who were also future Athletics. That year while sliding into third base, a freak accident took place. Limmer suffered a head injury resulting in blindness fo a few days. He recovered to have an outstanding season, returning to Lincoln in 1949 to hit 15 home runs. 1950 was a banner year for Limmer at St .Paul, MN. of the American Association. His 29 home runs and 111 runs batted in earned him “Rookie of the Year” honors and a promotion to the Philadelphia Athletics for 1951 Once more in 1954,first base proved to be a crowded spot. With the addition of Don Bollweg and Vic Power, Limmer had 316 at bats and managed to hit 14 home runs.Unfortunately,1954 was a difficult year for the Athletics with financial problems ,injuries to key players and the uncertainty about a possible move to Kansas City. When the team moved west,Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau took over as manager and informed the players that sweeping changes were about to occur. Within a few years, only Joe DeMaestri was left and Lou Limmer was among those headed back to the minor leagues. 1955 produced 28 home runs, 16 in 1956, 18 in 1957 and 30 in 1958 for a total of 265 home runs in his professional career.

63. Lou Boudreau - (1917-2001)

http://www.cubsbetweenthevines.com/Arch128.html
Lou Boudreau - (1917-2001) Our first sports hero passed away on August 9. In March, 1933 when I was six, my father got tickets for the family (dad, mother and only child) to see the Illinois State High School Basketball Tournament (all caps because that's the way we rated that event) at Huff Gym in Champaign. My father was the basketball coach at Clinton High at that time and getting to buy tickets to the state tournament was one of his perks. Huff Gym looked to us as the Superdome would later, but it really only seated 7,000 and this resulted in an incredibly hot ticket. Also, before the high schools began to be consolidated after World War II, about 1,000 high schools all played down to a single champion. Some of the winning schools were huge, e.g. Morton of Cicero, some, like the Hebron Green Giants, were very small. In 1933, Thorton High of Harvey was the winner. It was led by the sensational guard Lou Boudreau, the first player I ever saw both dribble and pass behind his back. I remember every move he made. Ten years later, Centralia's great Dwight Eddleman was equally large in my life. When Lou turned down the Cubs' offer out of high school and went to the University of Illinois, freshmen weren't eligible to play on the varsity. Only this prevented him from being named team captain until he was a sophomore. He was All-America in both baseball and basketball and was the acknowledged leader from the day he enrolled. When he was a junior, and captain of the baseball team, my dad got himself and me out of school early and we drove the 40 miles to Champaign to see the Illini play the University of Wisconsin in the last game of the season. Boudreau was the third baseman. The second man up in the first inning smashed a line drive at his feet. He effortlessly backhanded the short hop and threw a strike to first. In his at-bat in the bottom of the first, he whistled a double to the left field fence. In the bottom of the second it began pouring rain and after half an hour, the game was called. I was simply heartbroken. My dad said, "Don't worry about it, we'll come over and see him play next year." But, the Big Ten discovered that the Cleveland Indians had signed him to a postdated contract and he was declared ineligible for his senior year in both sports..

Boudreau stood out as a player and manager
By Richard Urban
Special to ESPN.com It was the top of the eighth inning, one out, runner on first, Cleveland Municipal Stadium, July 17, 1941. Joe DiMaggio had one last chance to keep his 56-game hitting streak alive after Indians third baseman Ken Keltner had twice robbed Joltin' Joe of base hits. But Jim Bagby got DiMaggio to hit one more ground ball, this time to short. Lou Boudreau bare-handed the bad hop and tossed it to Ray Mack at second, who completed the double play to Oscar Grimes at first. The Yankees won 4-3, but DiMaggio's streak ended. Lou Boudreau was a hero in Cleveland, both as a player and a manager.

Can it? "Oh yes it does, yes it does," insisted the 81-year-old former major league player and managing great, probably best known by younger generations for his work as a longtime radio and television announcer for the Chicago Cubs. "I had heard they had started one (in Cedar Rapids), but I didn't know I was in it." Boudreau is one of 10 men in the Cedar Rapids Baseball Hall of Fame's initial class of inductees, announced last night at the Cedar Rapids Kernels' Hot Stove League Banquet. Joining "The Good Kid" is Cyril "Cy" Slapnicka, who as general manager of the Cleveland Indians was responsible for signing Boudreau out of the University of Illinois and assigning him to play for the Cedar Rapids Raiders in 1938.
