Average Customer Review: Baseball Records, Feats and Top 10 Lists Scroll Down to See Entire Page Top 10 Lists
The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes. Batting Categories: Hits/Avg, Doubles/2B%, Triples/3B%, HomeRuns/HR%, StrikeOuts/SO%, Walks/BB%, Runs/RBI, StolenBases/SB%, TotalBases/SLG%, RunsCreated/OPS%

Greenberg
In memoriam: Greenberg a pioneer for Jews in professional baseball
Patrick Avery

ASSISTANT SCENE EDITOR Aviva Kempner, director of The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, grew up listening to her dad's stories of baseball player Hank Greenberg. "I grew up in Detroit, and my dad told me stories of the day he [Greenberg] skipped a baseball game to attend Yom Kippur and of his race to break Babe Ruth's home run record," Kempner said. Kempner said she decided to make this film to honor her dad. She started Sept. 4, 1996, the day after Greenberg died. After meeting with Steve Greenberg, Hank's son, Kempner began the arduous process of getting interviews from Greenberg's friends and former teammates. "Everyone was helpful and willing to be interviewed," Kempner said. "Only one person didn't want to be interviewed. That was Joe Dimaggio." Hank Greenberg began playing baseball in 1933 with the Detroit Tigers and quickly became a star, winning the MVP award in 1935 and 1940. He would have a Hall of Fame career despite being under scrutiny by many Americans for being Jewish. "Hank was the Jewish Jackie Robinson," Kempner said. "Many Jews looked up to Hank because he was the most prominent figure in the news at that time."

Hammering Hank
Documentary a compelling look at a Jewish baseball star
BY CURT HOLMAN REVIEW The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg

Directed by Aviva Kempner
Not Rated Opens Sept. 1 If there are subjects that reliably provide rich fodder for the tales of oral histories, they're baseball and Jewish culture. Just as the national pastime naturally lends itself to yarns involving the icons of the game, so do the oral traditions of Jewish life frequently shed light on the struggles and rewards of the American dream. Find a point where the two topics converge, and you'd be half way to a fine documentary. Aviva Kempner does just that with The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, taking the career of "the Moses of Baseball" and presenting it with more than enough wit and panache to drive it home. The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg has been playing on the film festival circuit and in other cities for more than a year, but it has felicitous timing for its Atlanta debut. It hits town to coincide with the nomination of Orthodox Jew Joseph Lieberman as vice presidential candidate, and it's fascinating to contrast the issues of Jewish-American assimilation in Greenberg's time with those of today. There's even a quote from limelight-seeking superlawyer Alan Dershowitz about how, when he was a kid, he was convinced that Hank Greenberg would be the first Jewish president of the United States. http://sportsjunkie.info/Hank Greenberg.htm
Story of the Week HANK GREENBERG Before television made pro football so popular, baseball was America’s only national pastime. Jews, blacks and other "outsiders" were not easily welcomed into the sport. A decade before Jackie Robinson broke the major league color barrier in 1947 (see my article dated 8-9-01), Hank Greenberg became baseball’s first Jewish superstar. He was born in New York in 1911. By the time he reached high school, he was already 6’3" tall. Baseball was his favorite sport, and he chose first base as his position. Greenberg was offered a contract by the New York Yankees in 1929, but turned it down because the immortal Lou Gehrig was the Yankees’ incumbent first baseman. After one year at NYU, he signed with the Detroit Tigers. He spent three years in the minors. After being named MVP in the Texas League, he was brought up to the Tigers in 1933. He personally made Detroit a contender in the American League. Greenberg took them to the World Series in 1934; they lost to St. Louis. But a year later, Detroit won their first World Series, and Greenberg was the first Jew ever to be named MVP in either major league. The 1938 season brought more drama for Greenberg when he made a significant run at Babe Ruth’s record of 60 home runs in a season. He wound up the year with 58 home runs in this, the dead ball era.

rumors / press reviews audio the family room ... the other side by Brian York There are about 10 people who know who Hank Greenberg is. Those people are baseball people, or part of the Greenberg family. Those are some lucky people. Unfortunately, Hank Greenberg has past away. You can’t go to Florida, look up Hank and ask him about his life. Why would you? If you ask, then you’re not one of the 10. Obviously. How does one become one of the ten? Through the magic of motion pictures, that’s how. Ever heard of ‘em? Hank Greenberg’s story will not go untold, because of a wonderful documentary, aptly titled The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg As you might have guessed, (but I don’t want to give you that much credit), Hank Greenberg was a slugger in eras past (1930’s-40’s). So what? Sammy Sosa is a slugger in era present (90 - ?). What’s so special about this Greenberg, and why should I care? I ask myself that everyday, except switch Greenberg with rash. Greenberg was special. He hit over 330 major league home runs. How many major league home runs have you hit? He served in WWII (in the middle of his baseball career) for 3 years. How many world wars have you served in while playing baseball? Greenberg hit 183 RBI’s (runs battled in) in one year. An RBI total of 150 is considered to be masterful. How many RBI’s did you have this year? Hank Greenberg was Jewish. How Jewish are you?

It is probably safe to say that Jews have not been over-represented in the arenas of American sports. Yet in the 1930’s, Hank Greenberg emerged as a towering figure in the world of baseball—America’s pastime—a six-foot, four-inch slugger, a future Hall-of-Famer, and a decidedly Jewish presence on the baseball field. "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," a documentary film by Aviva Kempner, opens with a hint of the complexity that Hank Greenberg embodied—Mandy Patinkin singing a Yiddish rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" while street scenes of young boys playing baseball in the Bronx in the 1930’s flash across the screen. The son of Romanian immigrants and a Bronx native, Hank Greenberg joined the ranks of the Detroit Tigers in 1933. Detroit at that time was dominated by two men—Henry Ford and Father Coughlin—both of whom spouted fiercely anti-Semitic rhetoric. Despite being idolized by his Jewish fans as a "Greek god" and the "Moses of baseball," and by the general public as "Hammerin' Hank," Greenberg endured considerable anti-Semitic slurs on the field. In one instance, he even had pork chops physically hurled at him from the stands. At a time when other Jews in baseball changed their last names to gain legitimacy, Hank Greenberg's name blazoned the front page of Detroit newspapers on Rosh Hashana of 1934 with the headline "Talmud Clears Greenberg For Holiday Play." Fans of Greenberg wanted so much for him to play that they consulted local rabbis to find an exemption. During crucial moments of that game, synagogue services around the city came to a halt so that the congregants could hear the latest score. The following day's headlines offered a victorious Greenberg New Year's wishes in Hebrew. Yet, while Greenberg is rarely remembered for leading the Detroit Tigers to victory that day, he survives in both Jewish and American lore as the hero who chose to attend synagogue on Yom Kippur rather than play baseball, setting the stage for Sandy Koufax's similarly profound decision in the World Series in 1965.

PS-B RATING - There isn’t anything surprising in this biography of baseball legend Hank Greenberg. There are clips of his illustrious career with the Detroit Tigers in the ‘30s and ‘40s, as well as interviews with Greenberg, his family, his fans, his teammates, assorted sportswriters, and even actor Walter Matthau ( Hanging Up ) and attorney Alan M. Dershowitz. What The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg doesn’t include is an interview with my grandfather, who met Greenberg while they both served in the United States Army during World War II. My grandfather, who was a photographer, saluted Greenberg and asked if he could take his picture for the base or the Post newspaper. “If you want pictures of me,” Greenberg growled, “get in contact with the West Coast Training Command.” So did my grandfather hold a grudge?
