    Take a Lesson from Baseball
Ty Cobb and "the Christian Gentleman"
It is a commonplace in American society that you can learn a lot about life from sports: teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and so on. No sport has been more integral to American society than baseball. While watching the recent telecast of Ken Burns' PBS documentary, "Baseball," I was struck by the stories of two of the most famous ballplayers of all time: Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson. Cobb and Mathewson both began playing ball around the turn of the century. Tyrus Cobb had a rough childhood and grew up to be competitive in the extreme. According to one story, Cobb was once sharing accomodations with another player. It was his practice to return home before his roommate and take a bath. One day, Cobb's roomate arrived home first and got in the bathtub. Cobb insisted that the roomate get out of the bath and let him have it. "Don't you know?" he said. "I have to be first!" This "me-first" attitude characterized Ty Cobb's career and no doubt helped make him the great ballplayer he was. Observers concluded that Cobb had no great natural talent, but became great through supreme effort and uncompromising competitiveness. Unfortunately, Cobb's attitude won him no friends. He openly insulted other players, including his own teammates, and was overtly racist. He was not "liked" by anybody, only respected for his performance on the field. He played only for himself, not for any higher purpose.

Food: Served were pork and sausage with gravy over rice, cole slaw, and a roll. For dessert, there was peach cobbler and ice cream. Cooking and serving the meal for tonight's meeting were Sherrell and C.J. Hernandez, Dennis Bergeron, Joe Feutch, and Julius Gary. It was another great meal and, if you didn't make the meeting, you missed out. Thanks to all the cooks and servers.
Cowboy Club President Tom Sims opened the general meeting around 7:00 pm. Tom welcomed all Cowboy Club members and guests to the meeting and then thanked all the cooks and servers of tonight's meal. Member Gordon Duhon led the members in the blessing. And then Tom led the members in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Tom introduced Past President Frank Landry, who is now president of the Diamond Club. Frank gave an update of a few things that are going on with the baseball program and the Diamond Club. Tom said the Cowboy Corrall, outside the left foul line, should be paved by the first game of the season. He also said that the Diamond Club has take over the concessions at the baseball game from Aramark. He said that they will be using some Aramark employees but the Diamond Club will be overseeing the operation. Frank, also, said that the games and gametimes on the printed McNeese schedules and pocket schedules for the game McNeese will play in the Louisiana Lafayette Tournament are incorrect. He passed out a sheet with the correct games and game times. The correct games and game times can be seen on the

The book gives a fair amount of detail about the game's first national idol but lacks punch because of the mostly serene nature of "BIG 6's" life. To the extent that the book is kind of fluffy for its depiction of a man who is nearly perfect-save for incidences like his punching a vendor during a melee-it is almost Rockyesque in that one cannot help but wish they were a personal friend of Christy. It is currently the best I've read on the perfector of the fadeaway. Please don't just fadeaway...

It makes you realize that not much has changed since Mathewson once ruled the roost on the pitching mound. The things he say, the wisdom of experience he imparts sounds so fresh, so immediately relevant to the game as it is played today that it might as well have been written yesterday. Particularly impressive is the idea that there are pitchers who are fabulous when there are no runners on base, but once the pinch is on (hence the title of the book) they become tentative shrinking violets. The pinch, Mathewson writes, is the true test of a pitcher's character. How right he is, in this true baseball classic. A must read for all who love the game.

Brooklyn Dodgers 1900 NL N/A N/A N/A Nap Lajoie for Christy Mathewson in Blockbuster Trade Christy and Nap are already moving their bags. After well-known lust for Christy Mathewson, Chicago White Sox GM Dean Gordon sealed the deal with 2 picks (1st in 1902, 2nd in 1903) and Nap Lajoie to bring Christy to the Windy city. "It was very tough to see Christy leave before even putting on the Phillies uniform, but with Nap we also have our manager in place as well as a couple of future picks," quipped Philadelphia Phillies GM Tom Miskowski. "This corrects a situation that should have never happened", stated GM Gordon. "It makes me damn angry to know that what I thought was an innocent conversation with a fellow GM would end up costing me two high draft picks". Gordon is, of course, referring to the non-infamous Hotel Claremont "Philly Shaft".

Performance Summary: Christy Mathewson (Eddie Frierson), Hall of Fame pitcher for the New York Giants, shares his insights about life in the big leagues. The pitcher talks about his childhood in the quiet town of Factoryville, Pennsylvania, at the end of the 19th century and his early desire to play major league ball. Matty recalls the peppery locker room speeches of the famous Giant manager, John McGraw, who turns a losing ballclub into a champi

Unquestionably one of the finest hurlers the game has ever seen. One of the five original greats inducted into the Hall in 1936, Mathewson was the dominant pitcher of his era along with Mordecai "Three-Finger" Brown . More than Brown, Mathewson looked the part of the modern American hero - he was tall, blond, and blue-eyed - and his reputation for clean living and good sportsmanship was often held up as a splendid example for the nation's youth. However, some say that he was arrogant, brusque and rude off the field, and that his gentlemanly reputation was undeserved. Mathewson came from landed gentry, and served as class president at Bucknell University. He left Bucknell in 1899 to pitch for Taunton (New England League), then advanced to Norfolk (Virginia League), and the following year he went 20-2. The New York Giants bought him for $1,500, but returned him to Norfolk when he lost his first three decisions, declaring the deal cancelled and demanding their money back. He was then drafted by the Cincinnati Reds for $100 and traded to the Giants for a sore-armed Amos Rusie - Rusie had not pitched since 1898. In 1901 Mathewson won 20 games with a 2.41 ERA for the Giants; from 1903 to 1914 Mathewson never won fewer than 22 games.
