The Man Revealed
Book Review by David Shiner
James N. Giglio. Musial: From Stash to Stan the Man. Columbia, Mo.: University of Missouri Press, 2001, 345 pp., $29.95, cloth.
In July 1963, the members of the Academy of Sports Editors cast their ballots on behalf of the ballplayers they considered the best of all time. Stan Musial, then in his final season, was the only active player to finish in the top ten on the resultant list. He landed above a number of all-time greats, including the likes of Christy Mathewson, Lou Gehrig, and, perhaps most notably, Ted Williams. Today it would be difficult to find many people outside St. Louis who rank Musial ahead of Williams. Musial's excellent but unspectacular play, career-long avoidance of controversy, and longtime residence in one of the lowest profile of major league cities seem to have resulted in widespread underestimation of his achievements on the playing field. In order to rectify this, two longtime Missouri residents set out to recount the Musial story in the early 1990s. The first one to complete his manuscript was Jerry Lansche, whose

State inducts Stan "The Man" Musial into Hall of Famous Missourians

State Capital Bureau
JEFFERSON CITY - The crack of a bat resounded in the ears of every baseball fan in the state Capitol as Stan "The Man" Musial stepped up to an imaginary plate, took a batter's stance, and swung his cane. The St. Louis Cardinals great took the stage and wielded his makeshift bat yesterday when he became the first sports star to be inducted in the Hall of Famous Missourians. "Today, it's a great honor to be honored by my people in St. Louis and Missouri here at the state Capitol and being here with all the other Hall of Famers who are here," Musial said. The baseball great is the 23rd member of the Hall of Famous Missourians. Other honorees include Harry S. Truman, Walt Disney and Walter Cronkite. All honorees are Missouri citizens who have contributed to the state. They each have bronze busts in the state Capitol. Musial's bust was unveiled yesterday. Musial is only the second living honoree Cronkite was the first in 1999. The ceremony featured several of Musial's long-time friends who told annecdotes and stories about the famous player, including St. Louis Cardinal broadcaster Jack Buck and fellow baseball Hall of Famer and Cardinals player Lou Brock.

Stanley Frank Musial
"Here stands baseball's perfect warrior, here stands baseball's perfect knight". These are the words inscribed on the monument dedicated to Stanley Frank Musial by the people of St. Louis. It may seem strange at first to describe a baseball player as a warrior or knight; however, if we think of baseball players in a "jousting" context, we might appreciate the inscription. Stan Musial played with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1941 until 1963. During this period, he took part in 3,026 games, was at bat 10,972 times and made contact with the ball 3,630 times. He scored 1,949 runs and batted in 1,951. His life time batting average is .331. Stan led the National League `in total bases' for 6 years and high batting average for the same period. He held 7 National League Batting Titles and was voted `Most Valuable Player' in 1943, 1946 and 1948. In 1954, Stan Musial was the first player to hit 5 home runs in a doubleheader against the New York Giants. When Stan Musial retired, he held 17 major league titles, 29 National League and 9 All-Star Game records. He was proudly elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1969. His hometown of St. Louis erected a statue of him, its most famous baseball player, at Busch Stadium in 1968. Sports magazines such as Sporting ews elected Stan the best Major League tayer of the Year twice, in 1946 and in 951, and this same magazine honored im as "Player of the Decade" for his achievements between 1956 and 1964. Interesting notes on Stan's batting career:

Catalog: Book Manufacturer: University of Missouri Press Authors: James N. Giglio Release Date: May, 2001 Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours List Price: Our Price: Used Price: More Details from Amazon.com Amazon international Product Reviews: Excellent Biography of Musial Giglio, a professional historian, spent many years researching his subject and produced, in my view, the first serious examination of Musial's life. Given Musial's well-desrved reputation as a perfect gentleman and role model, many biographical accounts of his life slip into hagiography, but Giglio carefully avoids this trap. He cuts through much of the Musial mythology, and assesses the facts (laboriously compiled from archival research and interviews with many of Musial's contemporaries) in order to present Musial as a real human being. You wont find much dirt in this bookMusial really was a good guy for the most part. About the only blemish Giglio uncovered from Musial's personal life was that he impregnated his wife 6 months before they were marrieda mere peccadillo by contemporary standards, especially considering that Stan and Lil Musial have remained happily married for over 60 years.
