Ace Mike Mussina Remains Focused On Winning, With Or Without Run Support
By Louis Berney Mike Mussina was standing by his locker in the Camden Yards clubhouse after pitching what has become something of a signature game for him only two runs allowed in eight innings, yet not enough offensive support from his teammates to enable him to pocket a win. It's been that kind of a year, and in many ways, that kind of career, for Mussina. In their first 18 games this season, the Orioles scored three runs or less five times. Mussina was the starting pitcher in four of those contests. Clearly the best pitcher to toe the rubber for Baltimore since Jim Palmer, and one of the top five major league pitchers over the past decade, Mussina often has trouble earning the respect that he deserves. That's probably the product of his never quite winning 20 games. He has flirted with the magic number, twice garnering 19 victories and twice 18 in his eight full seasons as an Oriole. But in a game in which performers are judged, often unfairly, by statistics, Mussina is seen by some as lacking because he never has reached the plateau of 20 wins. (He once was denied that Mt. Olympus of pitching when reliever Armando Benitez blew a game that Mussina had seemingly won at the end of the season.) Mussina also never has led his club to the World Series, another yardstick some people use to judge baseball greatness, although he did everything humanly possible (and then some) in the 1997 playoffs in an effort to get them there.

Golden Glove Awards
The Gold Glove Award, which began in 1957, is given annually to the best defensive player at each position in both of the pro leagues. The honor was initiated by the Rawlings Sporting Goods Co., and a panel of sportswriters made the first year's selection. However, in 1958 the players themselves voted for the recipients of this prestigious award. In 1965, the responsibility for choosing the winners went to the managers and coaches, with the provision that they cannot vote for players within their respective organizations. The winner of the award receives a glove, custom made with gold-finished leather, mounted on a hardwood stand. Below is a complete list of Gold Glove Award winners since 1990: American League
P Kenny Rogers, Texas Rangers
C Bengie Molina, Anaheim Angels

White injured.
After getting turned down for a date at a local pub, Rondell White decided that it was his nose that was the reason for his bad luck picking up chicks. White will miss five days recuperating from the nose job, but according to him "the chicks are going to dig the new Rondell."
Winning ways
The Mudcats are back in the hunt after a recent five game winning streak brought the club to six games under .500 and only 6 games back of a playoff spot. "If we continue this way, there's no doubt we will be right there with the others" said manager Catfish Hunter, adding "As soon as Rondell quits bitching about his looks, we should be in good shape."

On Being A Baseball Fan Reviews of Baseball Books On Playing The Game December 17 2001: Recapping ALCS Game 2 Yankees 3, Mariners 2 On a night when Mike Mussina did not have his best stuff and the Yankees did not play their sharpest, the Bronx Bombers nonetheless topped the Seattle Mariners 3-2 thanks to another superb bullpen effort. These two teams are similar in so many ways. Both have an aggressive running game, a lights out bullpen, stellar defense, a versatile lineup of contact hitters, and several top flight starters. But the Yankees rotation came into the series in an ideal configuration, while the Mariners were forced to go with their #3 starter, Aaron Sele, yesterday, and to hurry ace Freddie Garcia to the mound in Game Two on only three days rest. Both starters struggled at the beginning, but then got stronger as the game progressed. Garcia recovered the feel for his slider by the fourth, and Mussina got his curveball working by the fifth. As such, the game was decided before the game was half over. Both clubs know they must score early, or face coming from behind against a string of tough relievers.

Mussina doesn't get credit he deserves
Oct. 8, 1997 Mike Mussina will get almost no consideration for the American League Cy Young Award, which was wrapped up a couple of months ago by Toronto's Roger Clemens . Mussina has never won a Cy Young Award despite the fact that he has the highest winning percentage (.682, 105-49) among active pitchers with 100 or more decisions. In fact, Mussina's winning percentage is the third-best all-time among pitchers with 90 or more victories, trailing only former Yankee pitchers Spud Chandler (.714, 110-44) and Whitey Ford Mussina has also accomplished something that no active American League Cy Young winner has ever done: defeat Seattle's Randy Johnson three times in one season (regular season and postseason). On May 8, at Camden Yards, Mussina beat Johnson and the Mariners, 13-3, a victory that ended Johnson's 16-game winning streak. Mussina then defeated Johnson twice in the division playoffs, including one game (Game 4) in which Johnson registered 13 strikeouts. The two wins that Mussina posted over Johnson in the playoffs marked the first time since 1994 that Johnson had suffered back-to-back losses. WE DECIDED TO TAKE A LOOK AT how Mussina's winning percentage compared not so much to active pitchers, but to the seven pitchers who were first-ballot Hall of Famers. We also included two other active pitchers (Clemens and

Showing Old Form, Mussina Impresses from nytimes.com (3/24/03) Jump directly to Library content from any website! An ace in an era dominated by hitting, Mussina spent a decade fronting the Baltimore Orioles starting rotation before jumping ship to don Yankee pinstripes. A hybrid of a control and a power pitcher, he could blow a mid-90s fastball through a hitter’s wheelhouse as easily as he could drop his patented knuckle-curveball on the outside corner. With a fluid delivery and a slender, compact build in the Jim Palmer and Tom Seaver mold, Mussina exemplified poise and athleticism on the mound. Off the field he carried himself with an intellectual loner’s reserve, always polite, but often moody and seldom forthcoming.
