MAHMOUD ABDUL-RAUF'S SUSPENSION FOR REFUSING TO STAND FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM: A "FREE THROW" FOR THE NBA AND DENVER NUGGETS, OR A "SLAM DUNK" VIOLATION OF ABDUL-RAUF'S TITLE VII RIGHTS?

INTRODUCTION
In 1965, Sandy Koufax, a Jewish baseball player, refused to pitch in the first game of the World Series because it fell on a holy day, Yom Kippur. In 1967, numerous state boxing commissions stripped Muhammad Ali of his boxing license and of his heavyweight title when, as a result of his Muslim beliefs, he refused to step forward for the draft during the Vietnam conflict. More recently, in 1996, the National Basketball Association ("NBA") suspended then Denver Nugget Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf without pay when he refused to abide by a league rule that requires "players to line up in a dignified posture for the anthem." Abdul-Rauf claimed that his Muslim beliefs precluded him from participating in the National Anthem because the Koran forbids participation in any "nationalistic ritualism."

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf decided that telling the truth was more important than his NBA career and $2.6 million contract. His Islamic and political beliefs prevent him from promoting the emblem of his oppressors. In a country where religious beliefs (at least Christian religious beliefs) are protected, Abdul-Rauf's position should be admired. The outrage over his stance only points out the deep racial divide in this country. Whether he returns to basketball or not, Abdul-Rauf is a roll model. He is a dignified man of integrity. The NBA players and coaches should refuse to play any more games until the rules are reversed. Anti-patriotism is not a crime. Robert Rockwell, M.D.

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf
Born: March 9, 1969
Position: Point Guard
Height: 6-1 (1.85 m)
Jerseys worn: #1
In the NBA:
His Game:
Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was a high-scoring point guard, extremely efficient from the free-throw line.
His Career:
Chris Jackson was the 3rd selection overall in the 1990 NBA Draft, by the Denver Nuggets. In his rookie season he averaged 14.1 points in 22.1 minutes coming off the bench! The next season was very bad, for a variety of reasons and his scoring dropped to 10.3 points. In 1992-'93 though, he established himself as the starting point guard of the Denver Nuggets, and scored a career-high 19.2 ppg. He remained a starter and maintained his game in high levels for the next 3 seasons. In 1994 he shot an amazing 95.6% in free-throws and in 1996 he matched his career-high in points (19.2) and established a new one in assists (6.8).
He played in Sacramento during the 1996-'97 season. He scored 13.7 points in 28.4 minutes, mostly as a starter. The next year he played only 31 games, scoring 7.3 points off the bench. His next and final season was with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2000-'01, where he played a secondary role, helping a young team with his experience and good scoring in limited minutes. After this, he decided to retire.
Honors:
Abdul-Rauf was the NBA's Most Improved Player in 1993. He led the league in free-throw percentage in 1994 and 1996.

[Growing up in America,] I eventually found that . . .emotionally, spiritually, I could not afford to be a racist. As I got older, I gradually got past believing that black was either the best or the worst. It just was. The black man who had the most profound influence on me was Malcolm X. I had read "Muhammad Speaks", the Black Muslim newspaper, but even in the early sixties, their brand of racism was unacceptable to me. It held the identical hostility as white racism, and for all my anger and resent ment, I understood that rage can do very little to change anything. It's just a continual negative spiral that feeds on itself, and who needs that? . . .Malcolm X was different. He'd made a trip to Mecca, and realized that Islam embraced people of all color. He was assassinated in 1965, and though I didn't know much about him then, his death hit hard because I knew he was talking about black pride, about self-help and lifting ourselves up. And I liked his attitude of non-subservience. . . .Malcolm X's autobiography came out in 1966, when I was a freshman at UCLA, and I read it right before my nineteenth birthday. It made a bigger impression on me than any book I had ever read, turning me around totally. I started to look at things differently, instead of accepting the mainstream viewpoint.

Why I Defend The Rights Of Basketball's Abdul-Rauf
    BY MARK CURTIS

FORT MADISON, Iowa - The most recent scrimmage in the "culture war" was played on a basketball court. Mahmoud Abdul- Rauf, a guard for the National Basketball Association's Denver Nuggets, was suspended indefinitely without pay by the league for not standing at attention during the playing of the national anthem. In an interview I saw on television he said he refused to stand because (1) as a Muslim his religion prohibits "nationalistic demonstrations," and (2) for him the "Star Spangled Banner" symbolizes "the oppression of Caucasians and African Americans." Both good reasons, I thought. After all, what does the national anthem have to do with the game? I wouldn't want such a requirement on my job. Here in prison we have to stand at our bars during three daily counts, but we can still read, talk, or whatever, while we do. Most of the guys I talked with about this agreed that Abdul- Rauf was within his rights and that the NBA would probably back down. To them, it was a free-speech issue. More than a few, however, had a different opinion. "How would he like it if I came into his church and lit a cigarette? Sooner or later people like him will find out that whites are going to stop watching basketball. He's ruining the game," was one long- time sports fan's comment. Another argument I heard quite a bit was, "He knew what he was getting into when he signed his multi- million dollar contract. He knew the rules then and he should follow them now."
