KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR ARRESTED LOS ANGELES - Basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was arrested Tuesday night for investigation of driving under the influence of marijuana. The former Los Angeles Lakers and UCLA star was taken into custody about 7 p.m. after a police officer who pulled him over for speeding smelled marijuana fumes coming from the open window of his car, said Officer Eduardo Funes, a police spokesman. Abdul-Jabbar failed a field sobriety test administered near the San Fernando Valley intersection where he was stopped, Funes said. He was taken to a local jail, where he was booked on the misdemeanor charge and released on his own recognizance. ``Mr. Abdul-Jabbar was very respectful of the officers who arrested him, and very cooperative,'' Funes said.

But has our society's fixation on black athletes hurt other African-Americans? Next time on To the Best of Our Knowledge, sports and race in America. Also, basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar talks about his heroes.
SEGMENT 1 John Hoberman teaches languages at the University of Texas. He talks with Judith Strasser about his book "Darwin's Athletes: How Sport Has Damaged Black America and Preserved the Myth of Race." Also, Chet Walker , formerly an all-star player in the NBA and now a Hollywood TV and movie producer, tells Steve Paulson that he was used as a Black athlete by his mostly white college, but acknowledges that sports gave him many opportunities he would not otherwise have had. Walker's memoir is "Long Time Coming: A Black Athlete's Coming-of- Age in America." SEGMENT 2: Basketball fan and poet Dennis Trudell has compiled an anthology of basketball-inspired poems and short stories. He reads some samples and talks about them with Jim Fleming. Basketball is like war in that offensive
weapons are developed first, and it
always takes a while for
the defense to catch up.
I always know what's
happening on the court.
I see a situation occur,
and I respond.
I can do something else besides
stuff a ball through a hoop. My biggest resource is my mind. If I weren't earning $3 million a year to dunk a basketball, most people on the street would run in the other direction if they saw me coming. Mental toughness is to physical as four is to one. Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around. If I don't keep changing. I'm history. One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team. Show me a good and gracious loser, and I'll show you a failure. Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships. The first time I shot the hook, I was in fourth grade, and I was about five feet eight inches tall. I put the ball up and felt totally at ease with the shot. I was completely confident it would go in and I've been shooting it ever since.

My mother had to send me to the movies with my birth certificate, so that I wouldn't have to pay the extra fifty cents [the adults had to pay].
It's hard for young players to see the big picture. They just see three or four years down the road. The first time I shot the hook, I was in fourth grade, and I was about five feet eight inches tall. I put the ball up and felt totally at ease with the shot. I was completely confident it would go in and I've been shooting it ever since. I try to do the right thing at the right time. They may just be little things, but usually they make the difference between winning and losing. I've had enough success for two lifetimes, My success is talent put together with hard work and luck.
