Story of the Week ELGIN BAYLOR Elgin Baylor was the first basketball- playing acrobat I ever saw. He was a phenomenal player, and very exciting to watch. Had Baylor been born 25 years later, his acrobatic moves would have been captured on video, his name emblazoned on sneakers, and his face plastered on cereal boxes. But he played before the days of widespread television exposure, so among the only records of his prowess that remain are the words of those of us who saw one of the greatest ever to play the game. In 1957-58, Baylor led Seattle University to the NCAA championship game, and was the tournament MVP. He was the 1959 NBA Rookie of the Year for the Minneapolis Lakers, averaging 24.9 points per game. The Lakers moved to Los Angeles in 1960. Baylor averaged 30 points or more three times during his career, and became the first player in NBA history to score over 70 points in a game. Strong and graceful at 6’5" tall and 225 pounds, Elgin Baylor averaged 27.4 points per game during his 14-year career with the Minneapolis and Los Angeles Lakers. His per-game scoring average was, and still is, so impressive. Not shabby either is his career .780 free throw shooting percentage. But the part of his game that has always amazed me is the fact that Baylor, at just 6’5" tall, was able to average an incredible 13.5 rebounds per game. He was a forward, and invariably was forced to match-up against much taller players. Those mismatches obviously did not hinder him.

1958: Elgin Baylor's slew of Seattle points too much
Last Modified:

The Capital-Journal

Results National semifinal: Seattle 73, Kansas State 51. Consolation game: Temple 67, Kansas State 57. Location Louisville, Ky. Leading scorer Bob Boozer, 6-foot-8 junior forward, 20.1 ppg.
Final record 22-5. Tex Winter, the only coach to participate in every Final Four run at Kansas State, was in his fifth year as head coach when the Wildcats advanced as Midwest Regional champions in 1958. Long before securing that berth with victories against Cincinnati and Oklahoma State, however, Winter overcame a nearly disastrous recruiting blunder. Although Bob Boozer visited Kansas State as a highly-touted recruit from Omaha, Neb., Winter and his staff had reservations about signing the talented forward and made him wait in a hallway while discussing the situation. "It is scary to think we almost let an All-American get away," Winter revealed in The Purple Pinnacle, a book detailing the top 40 athletes in K-State history. The Cats, however, secured the 6-8 Boozer and he joined 6-9 Jack Parr and 6-8 Wally Frank in forming one of the most formidable front lines in college basketball.

Champion: Kentucky (23-6) Final Four Final Team Stats Tournament Scores (coached by Adolph Rupp; won SEC title with a 12-2 record, which was one game ahead of Auburn). Summary: Would Kentucky's storied "Fiddlin' Five," a team equaling the most defeats (six) of any Wildcats squad in the previous 15 seasons, snared the title if it didn't enjoy a home-state edge throughout the playoffs (Mideast Regional at Lexington and Final Four at Louisville)? Didn't a highly-partisan crowd give them an emotional lift in the national semifinals when they trailed Temple by four points and the Owls had the ball with less than a minute and half remaining? UK benefitted from a sub-par performance by Seattle's Elgin Baylor in the national final, where he went 9 for 32 from the floor. Baylor was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player although the award could have gone to Kentucky's Johnny Cox, who collected 22 points and 13 rebounds in a 61-60 victory over Temple and 24 points and 16 rebounds in an 84-72 triumph over Seattle. Outcome for Defending Champion: North Carolina (19-7) tied for second place in the ACC after starting center Joe Quigg was sidelined his entire senior season following a leg injury in the team's first big scrimmage. Six of the Tar Heels' defeats were by more than 10 points.
