    "
Mays got letters from Abe Saperstein, the legendary coach and founder of the Harlem Globetrotters, asking him if he'd be interested in joining the squad. At the time, a spot on the Globetrotters' roster was a far higher-profile and higher-paying gig than playing in the NBA. "
    The Bandit and the Rabbit
By Dave McKenna L ast week, Gary Mays was offered a left arm by the state of Maryland. When he was just 5 years old, he lost the one he was born with to a shotgun blast. That was 61 years ago. "The One-Armed Bandit don't need another arm," George Washington tells me with a howl. "Just ask Elgin." Washington, a Riggs Park resident who has known Mays since junior high, is referring to Elgin Baylor, D.C.'s finest basketball export ever. The comment gets knowing nods and guffaws from everybody in the clubhouse. Everybody, that is, but Mays, who just seems embarrassed to be mentioned alongside the almost mythical Rabbit. In his senior season at Spingarn, Baylor broke every schoolboy scoring record that mattered, tallying 37.5 points per game and notching 70 points in one memorable contest. In two regular season matchups against Armstrong, both blowouts, Baylor scored 45 and 44 points, respectively. But the day of the playoff game, Armstrong coach Charles Baltimore called a team meeting to tell his players that if they were going to lose to Spingarn yet again, Baylor wasn't going to be the one to beat them. On the blackboard, he quickly scrawled a box-and-one defense, a rather gimmicky scheme in which four players clog up the lane with a zone and the fifth shadows the opposition's top scorer all over the court.

White an athlete whose talent transcended time

    E-mail this article
Print this article Search web archive Sammy White grew up in a one-room house on Aurora near Green Lake. A blanket separated sleeping from eating. But from such desperate beginnings came an athlete ahead of his time, a rangy kid who could dunk a basketball when it wasn't even allowed, who led Seattle's Lincoln High School to a state championship, the Huskies to the NCAA tournament. He signed with the Seattle Rainiers to play professional baseball, and after two seasons was on his way to the major leagues. "I remember going to Sicks' Stadium with Sam one day," said Lew Morse, his dearest friend, "and sitting on top of the other dugout was Oakland's Billy Martin, who must have been all of 16 or 17 then. "Billy yelled at Sam, 'Hey, there goes the $60,000 man.' " White was to find out later that day that the Boston Red Sox had just purchased his contract for $60,000. It is difficult to compare athletes from different eras and different sports, but nearly everyone who played with Sammy White came away convinced that here was an athlete who could have played in any era.

    The Basketball Hall Of Fame
The basketball hall of fame, founded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, opened it's doors October, 1949, in a two-room office on the campus of Springfield College in Massachusetts, where James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. The first members were inducted in 1959 and construction on a building for the basketball hall of fame began two years later. But construction was stopped on the hall for lack of money. New fund-raising drives had to be started to complete the basketball hall of fame construction. The building finally opened on Feb. 17, 1968. From 1968 until 1985 the hall attracted 630,179 visitors. A new $11 million building in a different location in Springfield was opened to the public on June 30, 1985. In 2002, the Hall of Fame moved into its third building, a $45 million, 80,000-square-foot facility. Nominees for the basketball hall of fame are voted upon by a 24-member committee of trustees, media, and inducted members. If not elected within five years after nomination, a candidate can be considered by a special veterans committee after another wait of five years.
