FORMER U.S. SENATOR AND NBA GREAT DISCUSSES POLITICS, SPORTS AND MORE One-on-One with Bill Bradley
Senator, Hall-of-Famer, Rhodes Scholar, NBA All-Star, All-American. Those are just a few of the adjectives that usually precede the name Bill Bradley . A native of Crystal City, Missouri, Bradley possessed unique characteristics as not only an exemplary basketball player but an even better student. After maintaining an "A" grade-point average and a 38.0 ppg scoring average on the court during his senior year in high school, he chose to continue his education and basketball career at Princeton University, where he gained national recognition for his work ethic both on and off the court.

BILL BRADLEY Basketball Star/Politician One of the first pro-athlete-turned-politicians, Bradley was also one of the few with bona fide intellectual credentials. A three-time All-American at Princeton, Bradley delayed his professional basketball career to spend two years at Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship . Upon his return he joined the New York Knicks and played on their 1970 and 1973 championship teams. In 1978 he was elected to the U.S. Senate and served three terms. In January 1999 he announced his intention to run for president, aiming for the nomination from the Democratic Party. He was defeated in the 2000 primary elections by then Vice President Al Gore.

Before he became a political name, Bradley had game By Jeff D'Alessio The Sporting News TSN archives Princeton product Bill Bradley still holds the tournament record for free-throw percentage (90.6). Former presidential candidate Bill Bradley was a pretty good player before he went into politics. The pride of Princeton still holds the Final Four record for most points in a game, scoring 58 in a third-place win over Wichita State in 1965. These days, Bradley works as managing director for a New York City investment bank. TSN: What's the best change they've made with the NCAA Tournament since you played in it? BB: I think the best thing is the amount of attention players get today. I've never been able to get the film of that 58-point game. I've always wanted to show my daughter I could hit hook shots from the corner. I remember being at the Final Four. The night before the Michigan game, we flew out from New Jersey. We checked into a motel I think it was a Howard Johnson and my roommate and I checked into the room and there were no beds. All we had were pull-out sofas. That's what they had us sleeping on. We thought, "Here we are in the finals, and they can't even give us a reasonable bed."

Democratic presidential hopeful Bill Bradley points and winks at a friend before autographing a basketball during a reception at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999. Bradley returned to the Garden for a sports superstar fundraiser. The AP Basketball buddies line up behind Bill Bradley
NEW YORK (AP) The lights went up and the fans roared as Bill Bradley took center court Sunday on the hardwood floor of Madison Square Garden with his old Knick teammates, Earl Monroe, Willis Reed, Dick Barnett and Walt Frazier. But this was no 1970s flashback or ordinary reunion. This was a $1.5 million fund-raiser intended to help Bradley go from Madison Square Garden to the Rose Garden, from being called "Dollar Bill" on the court to being addressed as "Mr. President" in the Oval Office. The event attended by 5,000 people included tributes, praise and reminiscences from ex-teammates and former rivals. "You are what America needs," former Celtics great Bill Russell told Bradley after ribbing him for his plodding style. "As slow as he was, he had to have discipline."

Bill Bradley was born July 28, 1943 in Crystal City, Missouri, a small town on the banks of the Mississippi River, 36 miles south of St. Louis. The only child of Warren and Susan Bradley, Bill enjoyed a middle-class family upbringing in an ethnically and racially diverse town with a strong blue-collar base. The son of a well-respected, small-town banker and a former schoolteacher, Bill was often teased for his family’s success and sought to fit in as "one of the guys" by playing basketball. For Bill, "basketball was the great common denominator. It didn’t make any difference who you were." Through hard work, practice and perseverance, Bill succeeded in basketball; scoring 3,000 points in four years of high school and winning All-American honors his junior and senior years. Although basketball was Bill’s passion, he was a very well-rounded individual. He was also an Eagle Scout, the high school student body president, and a member of the baseball and track teams. Recruited heavily out of high school, Bill initially chose to attend Duke University in North Carolina, but changed his mind after completing an educational tour of Europe in the summer prior to his freshman year. The trip, which sparked his interest in international affairs as well as the prospect of studying at Oxford University, caused him to reconsider his college choice and attend Princeton, instead of Duke. Although Princeton did not give out athletic scholarships, they had an impressive record of producing Rhodes Scholars.

Born in Crystal City, Missouri, the definition of blue collar small-town America, Bill Bradley shone both as an athlete and a student. He found himself torn between politics and basketball. He chose basketball.
Bill Bradley first caught the public's imagination as a member of the US's gold medal-winning team at the 1964 Olympics and a subsequent profile in the New Yorker magazine described the 21-year-old as so talented that he would probably one day be President. A son of a banker and a former school teacher, the young Bill went on to Princeton University before winning a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford - but found himself torn between politics and basketball. Bill Bradley: Concerned Former Basketball Hero By our foreign editor Saskia van Reenen, 31 January 2000
The battle in the Democratic camp is between former Senator Bill Bradley and Vice-President Al Gore. Bradley is the progressive thinker with a sporting past. His programme is too radical for most Americans. But it's his ailing health that may be his biggest problem in the fight against Gore. Bill Bradley lacks charisma. He is seen as a dull intellectual, just like his Democratic opponent Al Gore. This image is further strengthened by his long pauses during debates. "Bill Bradley is a thinker", say his supporters. He has his eyes on social injustice, and is concerned for his fellow men. It's a pity that his message doesn't come across because of poor presentation. America's sporting hero
Bradley lived an impetuous youth. As the son of a Republican banker, he studied politics and philosophy at Oxford University in England. After his studies, he received a contract as a professional basketball player with the New York Knicks. He won an Olympic gold medal with the national basketball team in 1964. The same year, he swapped sport for a political career. For eighteen years he represented the state of New Jersey in the Senate. Tolerance
His great political example is Robert Kennedy and particularly his dedication to equal human rights. Bradley fights for the rights of Indians, and wants some of the land that was taken from them to be returned. He is also concerned about the lot of minority groups, and is calling for mutual tolerance. In his speeches, Bradley comes across as a teacher who patiently explains to his pupils how to make life better for the different social groups. "American can be the world's greatest multiracial society", is one of Bradley's slogans.

One of the most publicized college athletes of his era, Bradley starred at Princeton University for three seasons, scoring 2,503 points for an average of 30.1 per game. A 6-foot-5, 205-pound forward, he was named to some All-American teams in 1963 and was a consensus All-American in 1964 and 1965, when he was unanimously named the college player of the year. Bradley, who captained the 1964 gold medal Olympic team, won the 1965 Sullivan Award as the outstanding amateur athlete of the year. He was the first basketball player to receive the award. Before he had even graduated, Bradley was the subject of a book, John McPhee's A Sense of Where You Are , originally a series of articles in the New Yorker. The title referred to Bradley's court sense. Small for his position and lacking speed, Bradley used intelligence, quickness, and hours of practice on his own to become an outstanding passer and shooter. He carried Princeton to three Ivy League titles. Bradley's value to the team was underlined in the 1964 Holiday Festival Tournament, when he scored 41 points against the University of Michigan to give Princeton a 75-63 lead before fouling out with about 41/2 minutes to play. With Bradley on the bench, Michigan outscored Princeton 17-3 to win 80-78.
