Bill Bradley
Click here for Bill Bradley's report Scholar, athlete, teacher, writer, politician. Leo Bill Bradley has worn many hats in his life and he still wants more. Bradley became a basketball player at a very young age. His sports skills always took second place to his educational goals, however, which he demonstrated by rejecting multitudes of sports scholarships in order to attend college at Princeton. After his graduation, he was offered a spot on the New York Knicks. He postponed this, however, so that he could earn his Masters degree as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. Only after he was satisfied with his education did he succumb to the temptations of the court. After a successful, rewarding time spent as a basketball superstar, Bradley returned to one of his first loves: politics. After serving as a New Jersey senator for 18 years, he sought nomination for the United States presidency in the 2000 Presidential Campaign.

BY JOHN NICHOLS ON A RADIO PROGRAM in New Hampshire recently, Presidential candidate Bill Bradley was asked to distinguish himself from Al Gore, the man he must displace in order to secure the Democratic nomination. This was no easy task. "I think we clearly have a difference on welfare," Bradley responded. For a few seconds, it seemed as if Bradley might actually be preparing to challenge Gore on a platform of progressive idealssuch as maintaining America's commitment to poor children. In no time, however, the former New York Knicks star was reflecting on values, basketball, the perils of partisanship, and the fact that "I'm not really running against Al Gore." With less than a year to go before the Democratic primary process yields the party's 2000 nominee, Bradley has emerged as the most serious challenger to the hyper-aggressive and exceptionally well-funded Gore campaignwhich reportedly is raising in excess of $600,000 in contributions each week. While other candidates could still enter the race, including the Reverend Jesse Jackson, it is Bradley who in the critical first months of 1999 rose to the task. Sort of.

Senator Bill Bradley
A Profile
Bill Bradley is the senior U.S. Senator from New Jersey. A Democrat, he was elected to his third term in 1990. From the day he arrived in the Senate in 1979, Bradley has devoted himself to building a more secure future for Americans by creating a strong and growing economy, providing new educational opportunities, and bridging the gaps between people of different races and nations. He serves on the Senate Finance Committee, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and the Special Committee on Aging.
Tax Relief, Economic Priorities and Deficit Reduction
Senator Bradley is widely known as the author of the proposed Fair Tax, which eventually becarne the Tax Reform Act of 1986. His tax reforms were based on the principle that people of equal incomes should pay equal taxes. Despite a widespread belief that special interests would prevail, Bradley succeeded in sharply reducing tax rates for all Americans by eliminating most corporate and individual loopholes-in the tax code. It required taxpayers who had avoided paying taxes to pay their fair share, gave tax relief to families, and insured that six million low-income working people would pay no federal tax. As a member of the Finance Committee, Bradley has continued to fight for fair tax policy, honest budgeting, and economic policies that enhance competitiveness and growth.

The Black Brimmer American Bar and Grille in downtown Manchester (NH) is not usually a daytime venue for anything, bar the City Hall gang who use the place as a lunchtime watering hole. But 9:45 am on Saturday, July 31, 1999 found a clutch of photographers huddled outside the "nite spot", swapping cigarettes and war stories and occasionally scanning a deserted Elm Street. Entering the Brimmer , we were asked to fill out a brief registration form and guided toward coffee and Danish. We helped ourselves and found seats with uninterrupted views of the stage. By 10:00, the place was starting to fill up. We shuffled up and made space for a pair of elderly couples. At 10:20 - fairly punctual for a politician - Bill Bradley arrived to spontaneous applause. I knew little of Bradley, other than having read John McPhee 's essay on the Knicks' fabled basketball player ( A Sense of Where You Are , 1965). I had deliberately avoided reading anything about the former New Jersey Senator's bid for the Democratic Presidential nomination. I wanted to see the man, get a sense of his being. He's tall, but not as tall as you might expect for a former basketball player (I suspect they've got taller in the 30 years since Bradley dominated the court). He has a paunch. His smile is attractively lop-sided and his eyes twinkle. There's more than a touch of the

CANDIDATE BIOGRAPHY
As a high school basketball star in Missouri, Bradley turned down dozens of athletic sholarships and paid full tuition to attend Pinceton University. Upon graduation, the All-American refused to play pro-basketball, opting for two more years of study as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. After completing his schooling, Bradley became a star forward with the New York Knicks, and became known for two things, his quick release of the ball, and his "tight-fistedness," earning the nickname "Dollar Bill." After quitting basketball, he immediately ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate, winning in 1978. Two more Senate wins followed, although the last one in 1990, was by an extremely close margin to a virtual unknown (Christine Todd Whitman, now governor of New Jersey). Bradley retired from the Senate in 1995, having served 3 terms. He is married to Ernestine Schlant, has 1 child (Theresa Ann) and 1 stepchild. POLICY VIEWS

PRESIDENTIAL PROSPECTS Bill Bradley can go as far as his desire for the presidency takes him. The only question is whether Bradley really wants it. Since his departure from the Senate in 1995, many Democrats have felt that he has tried to distance himself from the party, even hinting at an independent presidential run in 1996 (which never materialized). Moreover, it has often been said that the brightest, most qualified candidates (ie: Colin Powell) are turned off by what one must do and endure to become president; Bradley may fall casualty to that circumstance. If he does choose to run, Bradley has the name, the money, and the connections to win.

[ INTERVIEW ] An Interview with Bill Bradley Jack Newfield
Bill Bradley was a basketball star at Princeton, a Rhodes Scholar, and played on two championship teams for the New York Knicks. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1979 to 1986. Bradley is the author of four books, most recently, Values of the Game. He is now considering a campaign for the presidency in the year 2000.
Newfield: When you were in high school, you gave a famous interview in which you were asked who were your heroes at age seventeen and a half. You said Bob Pettit, who played for the St. Louis Hawks; Mark Hannah, probably the founder of soft money; and the Reverend Billy Graham. Now that you're in your mid-fifties, do you have any heroes? or role models? Who are they now? Bradley: Not really. You have people you admire, role models for emulation, when you're younger, but not so much when you're older. You've lived life enough to know that everybody is human, nobody's a hero per se. In terms of those who influenced my politics, I did a senior thesis about Harry Truman's first re-election to the Senate in 1940. That was influential. And probably Robert Kennedy had a bigger impact on me than anybody else. Newfield: What about Bobby?
