By Erik Lyslo
Blazers.com Writer

It seems like just yesterday the questions were swirling and nobody really knew the answer. With Arvydas Sabonis not coming back, who would play center for the Trail Blazers this season?
All fingers pointed to Dale Davis and it seemed to be his job to win or lose. Talk about an opportunity. This is a guy who has played power forward his whole college and NBA career. This is a guy who made the Eastern Conference All-Star team as a power forward in the 1999-2000 season with Indiana. This is also the guy who has proven he can hold down the fort in the middle after 53 games this season. We’ll get back to that.
It really is one of those feel good stories for the Blazers team this season. There were a lot of question marks about Portland with Sabonis leaving in September. To say that Davis would have the same impact Sabonis had at center was ludicrous. You don’t just replace a guy who’s 7’3, 320 pounds, and shoots and passes like a guard. Not to mention, this same 7’3 giant was the only body in the league who could match up with Shaquille O’Neal at an average level. But Sabonis left and Davis was in.

Shot doctor helps Dale Davis at foul line
Pacer's free-throw accuracy improves dramatically, bringing more playing time.
By MARK MONTIETH, STAFF WRITER
(Article from Indianapolis Star/News, May 8, 1999)
The Indiana Pacers' roster includes the NBA's free-throw shooting champions from this season and last - Reggie Miller and Chris Mullin. It has six other players who shot at least 80 percent this season. The most notable performance, however, might have come from the player who barely cracked 60 percent - Dale Davis. Records aren't available for improvement at the foul line. But Davis could be a record contender. His accuracy improved 15.3 percent this season, to .618. For a player who had missed more than half of his attempts the past three seasons, it was a breakthrough. [Note from Tom: The above stats are for the 1998-1999 season. In the current season, 1999-2000, Dale shot 68.5% and was as high as 72%.] Davis doesn't need to be reminded how important foul shooting can be. He hit 3-of-10 attempts in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals last season in the Pacers' five-point loss to Chicago. Although players often improve at the foul line over the course of their NBA careers, it usually comes gradually. Davis - whose previous best was .572 as a rookie seven seasons ago - made a career's worth of improvement in a season.

has ever had.
Saturday, Sept. 8, 2000
was one of the great days in Clemson basketball history. No, not a single point was scored, nor a great victory recorded. But it was a landmark day for the program as 60 former Clemson players returned to campus to be a part of a Clemson basketball reunion and the induction of Dale Davis into the Clemson Ring of Honor.
The Ring of Honor is the highest award a Clemson athlete can receive. The inductee must already have been selected for the Clemson Hall of Fame, have made a significant contribution to Clemson's athletic heritage from an individual and team standpoint, and have earned an undergraduate degree.
Davis has been enshrined in Littlejohn Coliseum (along with former women's basketball great Barbara Kennedy-Dixon '85, M '92). His jersey has been retired. A look back at his career as a student athlete, 1987-1991, tells us why he is the first men's basketball player chosen for Clemson's Ring of Honor.
Dale Davis attacked everything he did during his four years at Clemson with a purpose and vengeance. Whether it be a rebound, power dunk or defense against the best players in the ACC, Dale Davis put everything he had into every play.
